Yes exactly! Just look at the different characters he plays in Life of Brian; the ex-leper, Pilate, the insane one that's chained up, the polite one directing people to their crosses, "big nose", Francis. They're all so distinct, yet each one is a superb performance. You never feel like you're watching 'Michael Palin doing a bit' which I often get with Cleese and Idle (as much I love the two of them).
I've always felt like Michael was the softest of the Pythons. XD If I saw the Pythons together, the only one I'd really dare to approach is him. I will be absolutely terrified of John Cleese or Eric Idle! XD
Carroll Cleveland said this "John Cleese was flirty, Michael Palin was shy, Terry Jones very jolly, Eric Idle a bit aloof, Graham Chapman very polite, Terry Gilliam loud and manic."
+Barney Os. i always think of terry jones as being the shy one, its just that sort of fumbly and mumbly way he has. like in the video where he got embarassed a bit talking about Palin.
Genuinely, this is sort of a silly observation, but I find it fascinating and so neat how gently the Pythons talk about Michael. Even when they do say anything 'negative' about him, they qualify it and surround it with compliments - like they say his writing benefitted from a bit of the edge provided by the others, but that what he does to the writing is to make it dance. With the others, they'll speak about each other's flaws and foibles, but with him they're so soft.
Michael always seemed to me the most amiable and friendly of the group, the one that freely associated with all the other pythons and tried to make them a team rather than separate comics all pulling in different directions. I also think this is why they all have nothing but good to say about him and is a testament to his importance to Monty Python.
"After 5 years, they give me a brush" might be the single greatest punchline in Flying Circus and a testament to Palin's dual sense of both classic and abstract humor.
Whenever your faith in humanity is lost... Go look up Michael Palin to restore your hope that there are intelligent, funny and generally charming humans around.
I find Michael to be a sort of middle-man in Python. The two Terrys pulled them in the visual/conceptional direction, while John, Graham and Eric were mostly verbal and hung up on logic. He was probably the compromise guy, which I guess is why he always ended up having by far the most parts in their shows and movies. It's easy to see why he's the best-liked Python.
Michael Palin is a genius at comic timing and at what pythons do. When I saw his other programs it became so clear to me that he is genuinely funny, charming/lovable/who-could-easily-have-a-lot-of-fans and yet not over the top or overdoing it or showing-off in any manner.
I found at least 3 comments asking about the scene at 3:04 so I decided to look it up. It's season 3 episode 13 (near the end) - it's also John Cleese's last appearance on the show. And I think the sketch is called "Credits of the year"
The episode is called 'Grandstand'. It was the penultimate Monty Python's Flying Circus episode where John appeared in front of a studio audience - 18th May 1972 - but the last one(#39) to be transmitted on BBC - 18th January 1973. The episode 'E.Henry Thripshaw's Disease'(#36 - the one with Tudor porn) was the last one recorded, on 25th May 1972. John looks a bit bored, especially during the last six shows(#37,#31,#34,#35,#39,#36), which were done about three months after the first seven. But when the 3rd series started airing, in October, they had moved on to writing Monty Python and the Holy Grail, including John. Those were the credits of the year 1972. Should have squeezed in Monty Python's Previous Record and the second German show as well, but there just wasn't time.
The last time I saw Michael was at a panel discussion a few years ago with a couple of moderators talking to Eric, John, and Michael. They were intro'ed one at a time and Michael was last. Not only did he get the biggest round of applause, women of various ages in the rows around me were looking at each other like, "Wow, he looks fantastic!" And he's not that much of a pushover; he's the one who said "NO" to taking their O2 stage show on a world tour. He was done, and now Python is *done*, Terry Jones' illness notwithstanding.
With regards to comic acting (putting the writing to one side: it goes without saying that together they were the best writers ever), these were six of the greatest of all time. Very few others come close (Peter Sellers, Hugh Laurie maybe and I struggle to think of any more with their range). Michael Palin is, without any doubt in my mind, the best of them all. And I regard comic acting as the most difficult and important form of acting so that makes Michael Palin the greatest actor of all time.
Que gran sketch el del señor que acude al policía. Muy sugerente. Y ahí se keda. En sabrosa ambigüedad. 😃Que sutileza de Mike para cambiar de tono y con esa sonrisa única. 😆😘😚😙
Had the pleasure of meeting him at a book signing in 2007 and my sister made him laugh when we thanked him for signing the book, she said "thankyou Sir Galahad" and he laughed and said "Sir Galahad oh right!" Also seen 3 talks hes done, best python by far and the fittest ❤
'thanks for tuning in, and remember, if youve enjoyed watching the show half as much as weve enjoyed making it, then weve enjoyed it twice as much as you', 3 guys everyone loves / ya never hear a bad word about- michael palin, ringo, and charlie watts.

I remember reading about how he lost it when some interviewer and two others criticized his work on The Missionary, and marched right out of his own house in a fit of anger. The last two were jerks, but his temper definitely got the better of him then. And no, he wasn't hungry. LOL
Are you sure that was him, because Eric Idle said lots of people get him and Michael mixed up, so he's taken to saying "Fuck off" to anybody who calls him Michael.
Energy transferance is only for protecting preserving our rights and freedoms OTRRTO in all directions... Kirk and Kurt Coban said everyone one is gay, not so; everyone is love, the rest is no ones bussines.
I bet that the one who disliked this video was Eric Idle trying to destroy Palin's reputation
Of all the Pythons, Palin impressed me the most regarding his range of characters. He could really be just about anybody and do it believably.
I particularly loved his drill sergeant in MoL, "WHATYOUVENEVERSEENTHEHANDOFGODBEFOOOOOOORE??!!!!"

jolly-shy or shy-jolly

Michael is definitely my favourite. He seems very warm and kind. Fantastic actor and I always found him the most handsome ♡
Same here. He's the handsome Python.
I'm sorry but that lion being thrown at Michael before he starts fighting it is one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

Michael Palin's still adorable at 70, love him
I just love the sketch with John Cleese as policeman.. I love the way he looks at him. 😍🙏🏻
❤❤❤
M: "Do you want to come at my place?"
J: "Yeah.. alright"
HE'S A LUMBERJACK AND HE'S OKAY
Michael = The Heart
John = The Soul
Graham = The Mind
Eric = The Voice
Terry G = The Eye
Terry J = The Body
How's Terry Jones the body?
Maybe because he was often naked on the sketches, haha. But I would say this is not quite right since he is so passionate about MP.
Carol the boobs

I'm a big fan of Michael; brilliant, a shining example and a national treasure.

I like how the only bad thing they can say about him is that he gets cranky when he's hungry...
Good Lord this is adorable. I love that even such, erm, painfully honest no-holds-barred Pythons just think Michael is a sweetheart.
"After 5 years, they give me a brush."
Why was Michael Palin talking about himself in the third person at the end?
😕El que habla al final es Eric Idle
@@isammolina6886 - Woosh.
My favorite! He looks like a nice man.
which nice man is that?
This video is proof that no one dislikes Michael.
LUV U MICHAEL. Always my favorite Python.
Hes like a puppy.

Michael was the nicest Python...Eric was the sixth-nicest. And here we see why!
Mike is the Python I'd most like to meet, since my chances of meeting Gray were greatly diminished about 13 1/2 years ago.
The last time I saw Michael was at a panel discussion a few years ago with a couple of moderators talking to Eric, John, and Michael. They were intro'ed one at a time and Michael was last. Not only did he get the biggest round of applause, women of various ages in the rows around me were looking at each other like, "Wow, he looks fantastic!"

He looks amazing for his age. And so so so gorgeous in young and middle age ❤
I would also say he got alot of parts in the tv series and the movies because he was the most versatile actor of the group
Funny when I watch Holy Grail, Life of Bryon, and Meaning of Life, I always perceived Michael and John as a duo amongst the rest
It's 'Life of Byron'.
Michael was the cutest :3
@Sylderon I agree. Although I only met Michael Palin from the all the team. He was a gent. Only a gent.
he's my favourite

IsaM Molina ay hermoso , me encantó esos 36 segundos , están muy bien hechos y son muy tensos jajajaja...amo cuando hacen de gay Michael y John
I haven't seen that sketch with the policeman ( Cleese) 1 min 29. since it appeared in a Python film about 35 years ago. Unexpectedly funny.
Michael has always been my favorite Python.
Michael's awesome. He's one of my favorite people ever. ^_^
Michael Palins audio diaries are on TH-cam highly recommended. National treasure.
The elder Eric Idle always reminds me of Gene Wilder.
FTStratLP yeap haha
Michael is always a joy when he plays someone flustered, and is stammering or trying NOT to say the wrong thing. "It's the Mind".
lol how could anyone who has seen monty python material confuse michael palin for eric idle. they look nothing alike and their names aren't similar
The difference is that Eric Idle is just a typical pretty boy while Michael Palin has the natural charm and freaking handsome.
It's because they both often played the same style of silly characters. They're people who don't know Python well, more casually. It happens.
And then. He used sarcasm.
+Charles Ashurst "I was terrified of him... everyone was scared of him... even Dinsdale was frightened of him..."
Dinsdale!
I've always thought he and John could do a sort of movie like "Withnail and I." Serious, tragic and funny at once. John would be Withnail, of course.
Oh man yes
I used to get Michael and Terry J mixed up. Don't ask how.
My favorite!
I like Mike. My favorite is Eric Idle but Mike has something. Like when he plays a host of some program (blackmail for example) that's just too funny!
My dad saw Michael a few weeks ago in Belgrade.
Сергеј Stvarno??Kojim povodom je bio u Beogradu bas me zanima😀 hoce li mozda svracati do NS haha
I love Michael!! My favorite Python!!
I always thought Idle was the handsomest and most striking, maybe its cause Cleese looks like my Uncle :o
Personally I think John Cleese is the funniest, while Terry Gilliam is a superb director, love his movies
When he did jabberwalky every time he said fishfinger we would drink in collage. That’s a great movie when your drunk
'thanks for tuning in, and remember, if youve enjoyed watching the show half as much as weve enjoyed making it, then weve enjoyed it twice as much as you',

Michael es maravilloso😆❤❤❤❤❤
I'm so proud to share my birthday with him! I can relate to the food thing too 😂
Opens with Palin describing himself...thats Michael Palin 😂

I think the sketch was called "Sam Pekinpah directs 'Salad Days', or something like that. More blood follows, lots!
better make sure it is Mike, and not Eric
i've always found I can't pick which one I like more, Michael Palin or Eric Idle...
My favorite python!
Lmfao!! Can someone please tell me the sketch where he gets his eyes blown out???
the last bit was hilarious!
And NO SINGING!!!
"john thinks he's great in bed"
Everyone's favourite psychopath gameshow host.
My favourite :)
Es hermoso ver a john y Michael haciendo de gay jajajaja ♡
they,ve send him to north korea , but he got send back.
figure that..
Underrated
Hello What is the sketch ( 3:03) ?
I have to disagree with Terry Jones. I think the best off-the-wall ideas came from Graham, but sure Michael can be awfully silly too :)
I remember reading about how he lost it when some interviewer and two others criticized his work on The Missionary, and marched right out of his own house in a fit of anger. The last two were jerks, but his temper definitely got the better of him then. And no, he wasn't hungry. LOL
He is the most adorable python. And i have a terrible crash on him
Are you sure that was him, because Eric Idle said lots of people get him and Michael mixed up, so he's taken to saying "Fuck off" to anybody who calls him Michael.
@Canaveral305 maybe he was hungry...
He was always the finest🫦
That's very important.
Irish blood English heart
@Canaveral305 or Eric Idle
🤟🏻
Where is this actually from? :)
not too bright, are ya?
That's the joke...
What is this from?

Michael Palin had autism.
