You are awesome! This is absolutely the finest tutorial of this most precious piece of music I have ever seen. I have been playing this for over 40 years and in total agreement with everything you said. I especially appreciate your thoughts on the tempo where most people want to do their own interpretation of the piece which detracts from its natural beauty. Unfortunately most of the videos on the internet are incorrect.. Please keep up the good work...I am also huge fan of Debussy.

thank you sir! for this wonderful tutorial video. Really interesting what you said about the tempo and how it becomes twice as fast on the first page. Something I would never come up with if I looked at the music on my own.

And I wholeheartedly agree about the tied note in measure 8, it shouldn’t be played twice. The gap makes it more mysterious hence suitable for the overall piece.

And remember kids, always finish on the Bach, never finish on Debussy :)

This is the most confusing piece to learn because of how Debussy plays it differently from the score, as if he might have forgot something or thought of changes after publishing. Don't you think he would have published a 2nd edition of the sheets if he really wanted to apply those changes?

No. Composers aren't always so careful or scientific about their published scores. This is because once they are done with one thing they often just move on to the next project. In this case, it is obvious that Debussy wanted it played with the tempo relationship he displayed in his recording, which is Q in 6/4 = H in 3/2. It sounds better this way and it is the way Debussy naturally wanted it to be played. We can't always go by the printed sheets exactly as they are on paper. Sometimes correct interpretation requires some degree of research and investigation.

@@BachScholar On the other hand my teacher considers the sheets as the main authority, and the composer's playing isn't always as reliable. I think Gieseking follows the same idea. I took his advice for my college recital to be safe. However, I plan to play it in Debussy's meter for my YT cover because it does sound better. I don't know if "sounds better" is a valid argument but I totally agree that it does. Good points with everything else. Glad someone's finally discussing this in detail!

Debussy wrote the most beautiful music. This is a true masterpiece in my opinion.

@@BachScholar Thank you for your reply. Is there a free trial to WRP? By the way, some of the "Very Slow" videos uploaded on this channel have helped me memorize the music, in particular Chopin's Op. 28 No. 16, and I thank you very much for your efforts!!! It's played in a tempo I could hear everything without breaking up the musical context.

There's no free trial. Most join for one month for 12.95 and if they don't like it, then they discontinue (which aren't many people). At 12.95 a month, memberships aren't expensive enough to warrant free trials.
