Im mostly a soundtrack collector, but got into jazz last year after picking up a few Tone Poets on what not auction one night. Ended up finding Mike’s videos, and my wallet has not been the same since. Already have a bunch of the list , and ordered some others after watching the video.
Would be interesting to see a "top 10 best sounding 2022 reissues" list as well (irrespective of whether it was AAA or not). A lot of the Japanese reissues (Craftman reissues of Three Blind Mice albums, Columbia Japan, Deep Jazz Reality, etc.) would also then have to be included in my opinion. Most of these have been from DSD sources, but man do they sound phenomenal!
Mike - fabulous list and insight! Blue Train even if you have an original, a Music Matters, both the stereo and mono rerelease are well worth owning Concur on the Miles UHQR 33 1/3 and 45 differences
Gonna disagree with you on that Cotrane/Hartmen LP. All I can say is give it a listen on your streaming service before you drop your ducats. IMHO. However, you're dead on regarding that "Blue Trane" (stereo) LP. I really thought I was going to like the mono better, but in this case the stereo version is the one to get (if you can't get both).
BN TP's Blue Train was so significant to me that I actually bought safety copies of both the M & S versions when I bought my two initial copies. Have lots of varying reissues (MM, AP, Impex, MFSL, Speakers Corner ) of FAV titles I've collected over years but hardly ever bought 2 units, 1 to store. Mike's spot on re: Joe Harley's understanding, focus & effort on this Tone Poet reissue. Kudos.
No kidding, that Ronnie Foster record sounds incredible! Bought it after hearing Chunky, but thoroughly enjoyed the entire record. Fun fact, this and the other classic series title that released on the same day - Jack McDuff's Moon Rappin' - both have tracks that were sampled by A Tribe Called Quest. Mystic Brew and Oblighetto respectively
Good stuff....couldn't agree more with your request for more Funk and Soul releases 🙏 Marvin Gaye was my release of the year....great flat, quiet, clean sounding all analog mix from Kevin Gray. Bonus album with extra unreleased tracks....that are....drum roll..... great and worthy of being played multiple times. Excellent liner notes (unfortunately packaged in non poly sleeves) that recreate the recording of this masterpiece. Lastly, and most important... sold at $35......Are you listening MOFI and Chad🤔🤔🤔🤔 Guess what.....you do not need everything pressed at 45 RPM and packaged with unnecessary boxes and filler ( Yes Mazzy is correct) and gouge the public with the ridiculous price tag of $125..... This release SHOULD BE the Blueprint for Audiophile pressings going forward....just my 2 cents.... P.S. The Superfly release was also awesome and hits the same bullet points as above.....😍 Cheers!
The only disappointing thing about the 45rpm Kind of Blue was how soon it was released after the 33rpm version. I bought the 33rpm upon release, can't afford the upgrade unless/until I can sell the 33rpm version.
I have to call BS on VMP. Mike I got my first vmp record. In The Dark. It came with a severe seam split. It took vmp 3 days to respond by email, only. I left instructions to remove the disk in the replacement and that was last week and no response to that. Also they say 7-10 days before they ship the replacement. I will never but another vmp record again. Their service is a absolute 0!
Was listening to the Coltrane/Hartmann I purchases from you for the first time last night. Stunning. After the family went to bed I listened to Side A twice, once while reading the accompanying liner notes and then just listening again... any follow up recommendations for someone who loved this album welcomed. Big fan of both artists.
Great list Mike. My top 16 list (which was limited to jazz reissues and not necessarily all analog) included 5 that are on your list including the Miles, Coltrane, Dorham, Coleman and Oscar titles. All stellar releases.
Mike has some pretty phenominal used vinyl listed I see, endless surprises in the collection and his videos also give you a good idea of what he bought over the past months.

That's a great list Mikealthough I haven't heard the Crosby, You we're mentioning the lack of good R & B records last year and then you didn't include The all analogue Pieces of a Man, the only ommission from a great list IMO.

What no Wild Thymes??? I have 9 of the 11, Crosby i wish i had, thought my local Mofi store was getting it but found out it was orders direct only. VMP Coleman does not interest me at all. These are all reissues. For me i believe its all analogue is Jack whites releases in 2022 were the best NEW AAA releases, also didnt mind the new RHC.
I really can't stand MoFi covers. But, I was really surprised to hold the MoFi Grateful Dead's Workingman's Dead 2xLP 45rpm in my hands. Really beautiful, it felt a crying shame to put it in an outer sleeve!

Mike, how does that David Crosby MoFi compare with the 50th anniversary issue which is, (maybe), an all-analog mastering by Chris Bellman? Rhino says, "Mastered by Chris Bellman from the original masters."
So many worthy candidates - Isaac Hayes (Hot Buttered Soul, The Isaac Hayes Movement, Black Moses, Shaft, Joy), Norman Whitefield (Temptation - Masterpiece, Undisputed Truth, Cosmic Truth), The Dells (There Is, Love is Blue), Dionne Warwick ( Here Where' There Is Love, Here I am, Soulful, Dionne) - just for starters
You definitely speak true facts, it seems like that culture takes a back seat. I grew in that era and it's truly missing. I would love to hear a MOFI of "There's A Riot Going On" by Sly Stone. I guess I can always dream🤔, sorry about my rant.

Yes. The exact same thing comes out of both speakers, and all the music floats in a center image between your speakers. I like stereo, but mono recordings don't sound too bad.
Have you thought about doing a list of non all AAA reissues? Now that some folks have come to realize that it is quite possible to make a superb sounding record with a digital step it seems like these titles should get a little love. Like they did when some people thought they were AAA records.
You and countless others are saying people couldn’t tell the difference that MFSL’s were digital. Meanwhile there was no comparison between a DSD record and all analog record. If a comparison was made, some might hear differences and could even prefer some DSD versions over analog pressings
Blue Note's insistence that they can't do the top tier, classic albums as Tone Poets because they already did Music Matters is absolute bs, and leaving a lot of money on the table.
I wish more late 70's/early 80's new wave/post-punk records got audiophile treatment. While those tapes are not as old as those classic jazz tapes are, they too will eventually wear out so would be great to get all-analog sound out of them for the masses while it's possible
@Jonathan Peters I for one am thankful for the first two Springsteen records getting this "audiophile treatment"--they are great, wholly unique and original early '70s classics from a recently signed nobody who was being championed by David Bowie. Now let's see if MoFi's treatment actually makes a difference in sound. And if so, is it for the better.
Great reissue but the jacket was too tight -- problems returning the sleeved vinyl and the sleeve would get all crinkled. Store them outside the jacket in archival sleeves.
Great video as usual Mike! Surprised you rank Blue Train as the number 1 Coltrane. Personally it’s probably at number 6 after My Favourite Things, Crescent, A love Supreme, Soultrane and Lush Life. Of course I bought the Tone Poet though and it sounds good. The Kenny Dorham Matador was my favourite of 2022, it’s absolutely fantastic.
10, to avoid. Although the Gaye has one decent track, Kind of Blue has some charm and Superfly is a masterpiece. You can find good copies of these for 10015$ quite easily. Blue Train is a very dull, generic Jazz LP, avoid!!
One of the main reasons I'm a record collector and audiophile is dancing with the wife in the living room. Pure joy.

The UHQR's have had a lot of pressing defects. Check your vinyl as soon as you get it.

Records are NOT analog. They are a mechanical storage medium. There is nothing analog about them. Magnetic moving tape is an analog storage format.

Dream Canteen is INSANELY well made. It sounds better than most all of the 250ish records i picked up in 2022.

Rhino does a lot of great reissues as part of Rocktober (October) and Start Your Ear Off Right (January). They're usually mastered by Chris Bellman.
