The original version for the screenplay of Ebirah, Horror of the Deep was intended to be King Kong vs Ebirah. Toho waited too long to get their new King Kong movie into production, and lost the rights to make any more King Kong movies, so they just swapped him out for Godzilla. This is not only why there is a scene in which Godzilla picks up an island girl, but also why lightning is used to wake up the sleeping kaiju. The Toho version of King Kong was given electrical powers in King Kong vs Godzilla so that he would have something to balance out Godzilla's atomic breath.
