    The sad reality is that most documentaries since the inception of the film industry are more about entertaining their audience than conveying the truth. The only reason people think that lemmings will spontaneously throw themselves off of cliffs is due to a particularly inept group of documentary film makers who just wanted footage of lemmings running. It was the documentarians themselves who chased the creatures off a cliff, then made up the story about the lemmings doing it on their own.

    I wound up watching Time Walker on the big screen back in 2018 at the Alamo Drafthouse Dismember The Alamo Halloween film festival. It was their entry for the Mummy genre. I wish I could say that the silver screen improved the experience, but it really didn't. It also wasn't the only movie riffed by MST3K I saw that day, as they screened Werewolf for the Wolfman genre and Zaat! (aka: Blood Waters of Dr. Z) for Creature from the Black Lagoon genre. The non-MST3K film of the day was Frankenhooker for the Frankenstein genre.

    I'm surprised there was no mention of the writing team behind The Green Slime. William "Bill" Finger, co-creator of Batman was a writer on this movie. Bill's name appears alongside that of Bob Kane in the credits of every Batman movie made since 2015, now that his work has finally been acknowledged. Most comic book industry insiders insist that Bill actually deserves most of the credit for Batman. As for why someone so awesome wound up as a writer on The Green Slime, that's a sad, depressing story I won't go into. In addition to writing on The Green Slime, Bill also wrote for S10 E07 Track of the Moon Beast, which was released after his death in 1974.

    Joel sure was determined to make sure that the audience was well aware that everything we're seeing is of his "own design" in this, as well as the early KTMA episodes. The way Joel kept harping on about it, I expected something to eventually come of it. Never did go anywhere, though.

    A thing I only realized recently (thanks in part to Big Action Bill's history videos) is that *this particular* Godzilla movie is unusually high-profile in the US because of a massive publicity blitz for a theatrical release here in 1976, three years after it flopped in Japan. It even got a prime-time network airing with wacky host segments, starring John Belushi wearing a Godzilla costume! I can only guess at the reason, but based on the posters, I think that the distributor was trying to ride the coattails of Dino De Laurentiis's "King Kong" remake and this was just the first kaiju movie he could get his hands on. So "Godzilla vs. Megalon" has an outsize influence on what Americans think a Godzilla movie is like. It explains a bunch of dim and confused childhood memories I had.

    • @WyldstaarStudios
      @WyldstaarStudios 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If memory serves, the version of Godzilla vs Megalon that was hosted by John Belushi was also edited down to only an hour. Less than an hour really, factoring in commercials and Belushi.

  • @WyldstaarStudios
    @WyldstaarStudios 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    In the early scripts, this was a Jet Jaguar vs Megalon movie, and Godzilla wasn't going to appear. The studio ultimately felt that the movie needed the star power of Godzilla if they were ever going to make a profit, so they wrote Godzilla into the final fight. Gigan appears in the movie because the suit was fairly new, and still in good enough shape to be reused. The movie also needed a second evil monster, since Godzilla was now included for the finale. If memory serves, the Godzilla costume used is also a leftover from Godzilla vs Gigan (1972).

    The therapy for autism involving tightly holding someone for extended periods is a real thing even today. It's not for all forms of autism, and it only helps regarding the symptom of not being able to stand being touched. Those afflicted with this particular form of autism can't stand to be casually touched the way most people do, but being held tightly helps to calm them down and eventually become adjusted to being casually touched after a great deal of this sort of therapy. Rather than actually having another person hold them for hours, these days they're usually bound tightly in a blanket. Bronson certainly couldn't pull it off over the course of one episode, or The King of Rock & Roll in a two hour movie. Constantly repeating "I love you" to them won't help in the slightest, either.

      I mean, yes, and that’s a whole conversation. But, right now at least, the user base is very much not that. I joined Mastodon the previous time everyone attempted to leave Twitter in 2018, and tried it again post Elon, and… while I like Mastodon in theory, it was frustrating and boring in practice. Maybe that will change! Bluesky is also theoretically an open source platform, so maybe Jack’s influence will be less there longterm (and of the two new social media platforms he’s involved with… well, it’s not clear if he cares about either very much…). Then again, as the last few days have shown, the leadership there isn’t great. Anyway we’ll see how it all plays out.

    Sandy Duncan was also in a 1970s made-for-tv version of Pinocchio. It's here on TH-cam. She has a lovely ballad in it, ("If I Could Start Again") when the title character is feeling bad about his life choices. Also noteworthy: Danny Kaye is Geppetto and it's retroactively quite creepy to see him constantly patting his "son" on the butt. Flip Wilson is fun as one of the villains, and the set colors and costumes are astoundingly eye-bleeding, even for the 1970s. I remember seeing it in its first airing. o_0

It was never completed, but the part that was posted was fun and interesting. Just search the phrase, "Turn Back The Sun Space Mutiny" and it should show up for you.

    I love it when this particular experiment appears on the MST3K Twitch channel rotation, since everyone watching can riff along there. It's about 50/50 people repeating Mike and the Bots riffs, and coming up with their own. I prefer to come up with my own names for Reb Brown, such as - Cormick McHardcastle! Nick Maxxpress! Brawl Manwich! Pipes Broadside! Klench Dumpsterfire! or Jet Gruntbeef!

Please forgive me.

    New Age like the Windham Hill or John Tesh stuff isn't the same as the ambient music pioneered by Brian Eno that they featured on Music from the Heart of Space. I first heard "Thursday Afternoon" in an episode.

    • @itsjustashowpodcast
      @itsjustashowpodcast ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! I'm glad you're enjoying the show. You've been commenting on episodes we put out years ago, so I don't fully remember what we said... But Heart of Space absolutely did play Windham Hill records! You can search their website for playlists dating back to the 80s. (They also played Brian Eno, of course. In fact, it looks like Brian Eno and Windham Hill records got played about as often?) I know that some critics and fans saw a huge gulf between Eno and the Windham Hill sounds, and from what I've heard they do sound different. But I'm not sure that Windham Hill artists weren't influenced by Eno's recordings? I dunno, I'm not an expert. From my perspective, it seems like Eno had cred and Windham Hill didn't, but over the past several years there's been a critical reappraisal and critical attempts to take Windham Hill style stuff on its own terms. I could be wrong! Looks like the Thursday Afternoon broadcast was back in 1987! v4.hos.com/programs/details/98

      @It's Just A Show I had no idea! I listened to more Eno than WH, but probably didn't get a big enough sample size regarding their playlist. 87 sounds right. I would have been a junior in college and had discovered Eno the year before.

    I think they did a good thing by depicting the junkie as a white kid. Drug laws affect minority groups disproportionately, and featuring a black kid as the junkie would have played into the stereotype that conservatives were trying to perpetuate.

    Happy Holidays! <3 Several fans have posited that Kinga was conceived and grown in a lab. I'm sure I mentioned it before, but I still think Dr. Erhardt was blowing smoke, and that Kinga's true Mom was TH-cam's own Tinplate Girl. 🍁 (Also, I miss Kinga's fancy-schmancy updo.)

    Just stumbled upon this, and I agree so much that this is a genuinely enjoyable movie whether riffed or not. There's a book called "Wildcat!" about the movies that Marjoe Gortner made, which is an interesting read about an interesting guy. He released a pretty decent album called "Bad but not Evil" in 1972. Caroline Munroe currently hosts a late night show called "The Cellar Club" on British TV, which is a triple-bill of the kind of movies that MST3K & RiffTrax fans would find familiar. She also had a singing career, and even recorded a song with Eric Clapton, Steve Howe, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker.

    If memory serves, Louis Armstrong disdained Bebop Jazz as "Chinese Music" when it first came along. But his opinion may have softened in later life, as it did for many. Oh, and *Cat Women Of The Moon* is one of the Pehl-Jones Rifftrax movies, and it's a hoot. Pretty sure that when Mavis Danton (Madeline Kahn) in "The Rehearsal" on *The Carol Burnett Show* says she was in *Cat Women On Mars*, it was a nod to that unappreciated classic. ;)

    While The Fast and the Furious (2001) didn't rip-off the story of Roger Corman's movie of the same name from 1955, it did rip-off it's story from a different movie. The entire plot is lifted from the Keanu Reeves movie Point Break (1991). Both movies feature a rookie FBI agent attempting to find those responsible for a linked series of crimes. He goes undercover in the world of extreme sports and meets a waitress/love interest who by pure luck is tied to the extreme sport he's trying to infiltrate. The FBI agent befriends the folks linked to his new girlfriend, and then targets the wrong group of criminals for arrest. The agent eats shrimp at a beach restaurant with the leader of the criminals he's looking for. The agent then blows his cover and is forced by his new friends who turn out to be the criminals he's been searching for all along to complete One Last Job, which goes horribly wrong. In the end, the FBI agent lets the leader of the group go for no readily apparent reason.

      How many episodes of MST3K are we allowed to dislike (but still have a few nice things to say about) before we can't say we like the show as a whole? Do we get to take into account how much we like the episodes we do like? Because I feel like the amount I love my 50 favourite MST3K episodes (and how important the show as a whole has been on my life) is more important in determining how much I like MST3K than how bored or frustrated I am with my 50 least favourite episodes.

    Happy Labor Day from another Match Game-watcher! Jubitz is *very much* a Pacific Northwest U.S. affair. Their H.Q. is maybe half an hour from me. In retrospect, the central tenet of the Pace ads doesn't really work. Given that *both* New York and New Jersey had sizeable Mexican populations even then. In fact, even before this campaign, our cable service in N.J. had two Spanish-language channels. Finally, there's an Italian sword 'n sandal epic right here on Le Tube called *Aphrodite: Goddess Of Love.* I'd kill to see it on the show, but I don't think it's ever been dubbed into English. :(

    Clu Gulager was in the first *Master Ninja* "movie, as the evil real estate tycoon. I think he had a certain White guy chilliness which works better with villains than heroes. (I feel the same way about Peter Graves.) Pablo Cassals is also name-dropped in the museum scene in *Progress Island: USA*. I didn't originally get the Urkel sketches at all. Then someone else explained that they're meant to document how a fad takes hold with the public and becomes inescapable, only to overstay its welcome and get dropped as quickly as it got adopted. Now I think it's brilliant. :D

      Yeah, I said the wrong Master Ninja movie. My bad. My notes for our two Master Ninjae episodes were in the same google doc and, well... whoops. And yes, Casals had Puerto Rican heritage as well, and there's a museum for him there! That's how I understood the Urkel sketches when they first aired. I was definitely a Torgo in a world of Urkelmania, so I was ready for him to be taken down a peg. But they sure do spend a lot of time on that one joke...

    I think the "Baby Woman" riffs were commentary on either A) she seemed to be portraying a teenager even though Bouchet wasn't one at the time, or B) That definitive mid-to-late 60s makeup styling. It was meant to give women a very youthful, big-eyed, even baby-faced look. (I remember this from the one Fashion-related class I ever took in Art School.) Possibly both.
