This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on James Rachels essay, The Challenge of Cultural Relativism, and examines the issue whether - as cultural relativists tend to claim - moral norms really are not shared across differing cultures, so that each culture would have its own set of moral norms. Rachels argues for a form of soft universalism, which holds that, while cultural practices may differ considerably, there are some general moral norms acknowledged by the different cultures.

Well, despite the fact that anthropology was originally a discipline within philosophy (like most social sciences), I don't think too many of its present-day practitioners study much philosophy

Uses an example of everyone liking chocolate not allowing us to say chocolate is good

I feel like Rachel's teetering on an argument ad populum fallacy. Trying to universalism as a reason for having standards to judge cultural practices

That's "good" in an aesthetic sense of the term, rather than a moral sense
