Love hearing modern musicians playing this classic big band song! Well done! I wish I would have been in that crowd. This song captures my attention like no other.

I don't really like most Jazz of this era, big band, 30s and 40s, etc. I'm more of a fan of the 50s and 60s era and style. But this one song, specifically the 1938 Carnegie Hall recording, is one of my absolute favorite jazz songs of all time. I think this was an excellent "reconstruction" of that great recording. I don't understand why there are so many bitchy and negative comments about these talented musicians. Stupid comments like "He didn't even come close to what Harry James did" and "that sure ain't Gene Krupa..." make no sense at all. What kind of pathetic person gains satisfaction by posting comments crapping on their hard work and dedication to the art of Jazz, just because they are not equal to some of the greatest musicians on one of the greatest songs of all time. It's no big deal to me that it's not as good as the original. I still enjoyed it. We need to support and applaud anyone who efforts to continue playing Jazz, especially at a high level like this.

This is not jazz. It's big band swing. Similar but different.

    Great job at the reconstruction!
Something I wanted to point out to some posters who posted negative comments. The venue is outdoors, so the sound reproduction is obviously way off from the hall acoustics. Also, I think some posters forget the Carnegie concert was part jam session and one example, the Piano solo was not planned, it just happened. So trying to compare the 2 is just not logical.
Overall I think the reconstruction was not bad, one thing which didn't sit well with me is the Trumpet solo where he fumbled with the sheet music, that's something the person sitting next to you should help you with. They need to be more team oriented and help one another out.

A couple of years before Benny Goodman passed away, he was interviewed on WJR radio in Detroit. He was asked to what he attributed his success over so many years. He didn’t even pause, and responded, “It’s good music!”

Good for them for trying to recreate the Benny Goodman classic. It`s a pity it doesn`t compare to the 1938 original. It was in a different time when people danced to swing & was played throughout the country.

This big band sounded quite good at the beginning of the song. However the braying saxophones degenerated into Pure Noise. Sing Sing Sing has no time or space for modern Jazz pyrotechnics. Also, the camerawork never showed the drummer. The original sing sing sing with a swing by Benny Goodman was arranged to Showcase Gene Krupa. This overall performance Falls far short of reconstructing Benny Goodman's 1938 Carnegie Hall version of sing sing sing.

Not a bad performance, but too much jazz. The original is magnetic and perfect to this day. Original Benny Goodman is The Best. Brilliant.

Benny's band had 4 saxes, two trombones, 4 trumpets, drums, bass, piano and guitar.....and Benny. That's it. These musicians....fine musicians, can play the notes, but there is a style of playing....a feel.....and SHOWMANSHIP that is sorely missing. Oh.....and Benny's band did it in tuxedos.

Sounds good - missing the soul....watch the clarinet solo... just rigid.... you folks are playing the notes...but rather than feeling that music, it sounds like it is being played to not make any mistakes.... drummer and conductor are the only two cats moving and feeling it...humble opinion of course...

    One more like chalked up.
Bloody hell, some bitchy comments here. No, it doesn't sound quite like the original and there are a few minor syncopation gremlins but do bear in mind the camera and onboard mike are off to the left of the stage so the sound recording is always going to be somewhat skewed (in this case, to the clarinet soloist and drummer's cost).
The ability to play it over and over again on TH-cam is a poisoned chalice denied the live concertgoer. Cut 'em some slack.

Have the carnegie hall concert on record and love listening to it. In this first part I thought in parts the beat definitely lagged. Part 2 is mostly jazz and Goodman was Swing so I didn't like at all.

I thought jazz is music that is improvised so each time the piece can sound different. I do love the early one but we can no longer hear it live. For differences listen to "misty' by both Johnny Mathis and Ray Stevens--the same song vastly different yet both good.

Lots of positive and negative comments from posters below. Microphone placement and mixing, if any, left much to be desired as did the cinematography. The performance had its high and low times, to be sure. Nevertheless I'd rate it "nice try."

um. no. Fine musicians- can play all the notes. But. Listen to the original. You haven't managed to find the heart of the music. That's incredibly hard to do for sure. Keep trying?

    • @jackcaynon9746

I agree. The clarinet player kind of gave up on the first solo in Part 1. And the trumpet player never tried to fly without a net. He didn't even come close to what Harry James did. I thought the sax players did a great job and their 'sax duel' added something new and fresh to the piece. But the piano player was a big letdown compared to Jess who played his ass off in that hallowed 1938 piece, his first big solo!

I don't like to be negative but this just doesn't have the divine fire. Fine musicians all, but this illustrates the difference between competence and world class.

Okay, I just found this group this evening. Third song in and same comment - why are you rushing everything? Slow it down a tad and it'll swing much more. I'm being really critical because this is music I love and know well. Also because this is obviously a very talented group. They are capable of better. Lots of places this is just plain sloppy. And the drums - what the hell kind of tom sound is that? Have you ever listened to Krupa? What I'm hearing are good musicians just rushing through a chart to get it over with vs. feeling it. Some sound like they're not really jazz players. Legit players trying to fake it through a jazz chart. If this was a high school band I'd say you hit it out of the park. These are clearly pro level musicians. As such, I give this a B minus at best.

  • @WesFanMan

Not even close. No life. Drum is out of tune...etc. How about some energy? Watch the performance captured on film in 1938.

I don't think there is a "film" of that performance anywhere. But, I do think you're referring to the still photos that accompany one of the TH-cam links.

Nowhere near a reconstruction, more a destruction, whoever was responsible for this project should go back to the musical drawing board, Benny fans are far more musically enlightened than to fall for this crap.

Yikes !! Just awful !! There's no fierce drumming, no tom tom feel at all !! The trumpet part was not even remotely close to Harry James...they might be very fine musicians but this historical piece of music was WAY BEYOND their capabilities !! Doesn't even sound like the same song !
