In my own perspective, I find myself more and more going back to older games simply because they aren’t tainted like the current model of games as a service is (bundles, battle passes, limited time events). What I mean is I can go into GTA 10 years late and still access all the content the game has to offer, nothing is locked off (aside from seasonal holiday content which can be earned the following years) because I wasn’t in the right place at the right time.
This is the biggest detrimental effect on modern gaming. Publishers and shareholders don't focus on you enjoying the game; they want to KEEP YOU PLAYING IT. Limited time events, grinds, they're all there just to keep you playing - and keep you looking at those beautiful microtransactions. You'll get bored of your skins during the grind, so maybe you will buy that cool skin. Retention is one of the most toxic words in this age. For gaming, but also for social media and all other online services like TH-cam.
Modern multiplayer games aren’t designed to be “fun”, they’re designed to be addictive Cos I’m sure the fact that they all have micro transactions is just a big old coincidence
That's because fun is not measurable. Any meaningful metric you can put up can be gamed or are unreliable for a variety of reasons. The only measure that you can truly measure in a games success are the very things that current games optimize on: time played, money spent, units sold. All other statistics, while potentially useful, tend to be tangential to that and are more dependent on the player segment. Following that logic, of course, they will optimize on addiction. An addictive player is one that spends the most and plays the most. This is what happens when you use metrics to drive all of your design decisions.
This is why I went to Indie games and Im glad I made that decision. I found fun franchises like Freedom planet, Shantae, Hollow knight, Deltarune, Gris and more. Of course, the only AAA games I would go back and play are either Kirby or Bayonetta.
New game models emphasize you playing and being locked in a loop forever… old game models emphasized fun, a good story and something that you can enjoy and move on from God of war ragnorak is a great examples
nice video! I want to talk about some stuff, as a aspiring musician. I don't game anymore that much but about the fact that "games are not worse today" at 12:17 : yes, exactly: old games, and in my opinion, old music pieces also, have the luxury of the time passing because they were all filtered (I remember how many horrible shooter clones we had when i was a kid:)) ) but also, today, i think objectifiably the whole art form of video games suffer from "games as a service" that for example Ross Scott is trying to battle right now. That's the reason that i think games are worse today, because of the companies killing them, and it doesn't matter if you have a phisicall copy anyway (something that i understand you're very found of...). That being said, after the "killing games" problem is solved (i hope), about the abundance of games, at 5:20 : i think it's like a music album: i'm always hearing stuff everywhere, non-stop, but i just need to train my discipline to sit down an enjoy a full album from start to finish, even if in digital. It's hard, but it's worth it :D
Every era has their ups and downs. In the 80s, the downsides were cheap clones and ET leading to the crash. In the “Golden Age,” it was the Movie License Games along with gimmicky motion control games. Now, it’s the F2P Battle Pass malarkey along with the bloated AAA Budgets leading to long dev times and buggy releases. But in my experience, gaming is pretty good. Primarily because I’m a single player gamer so I’m absent from the online game bullshit. And while a big part of AAA has declined in quality, I always wait to see what games are worth my money when I buy them for dirt cheap 2-3 years after release. And now with the explosion of Indies and AAs, we’re spoiled for choice so that makes up for the new downsides in this era. Plus, as a PC player, we can go back and play our favorite old games, either through Steam and GOG and also Emulation (Been playing the Legend of Spyro games for the first time thanks to emulation).
Lmao even single player got worse Most of sony exclusived are movies simulators xbox make no games anymore and all the creativity new genre new innovation richness is gone AAA used to be greatness how delusionalcan you be to say it wasnt better bzck then when even gambling has been normalized now? I doubt you have great taste if you think that
I find enough of the gems every year to keep me going in gaming. But only a few make it on a "best" games list. About VR gaming, I just bought a new Vr Headset after setting on the sidelines all this time. I already played Moss 1@2 and Red Matter 1@2. After I play Half Life that's about it that I would want to play. Now that is discouraging.
He play sekiro in the bzckground his point still stand none of modern gaming perfected a gaming genre shooters got worse fighting games dumbed down open world was never good hack nslash already been perfected I cant think of a single thing modern gaming has made better than old era
I genuinely have a blacklist of gaming companies . Even if i see a new game that i think i would like but if its from : Activision, blizzard, ea , dice or Ubisoft i would genuinely not buy it .
most games have been trash, its just that we have more people reporting on how many trash games there are. just look at 90% of the total Super Nintendo games list, they might aswell not even exist. but the same can be said for basically any system that had more than a hundred games released on them. a few Titanics floating in a sea of cashgrabs.
True and not true Gaming #1 method process was creativity quality gameplay passion of devs innovation of new genre when was the last you saw a game that did something new while being good ? Yes never gaming is just remakes clones lack of innovation now
Not sure if I'd call all indie games "groundbreaking" or "life changing." Celeste? I see no enjoyment from that unless you're an absolute glutton for punishment.
Games are better than they’ve ever been. People just buy trash lol. Of course a lot of mainstream AAA overmonitized games are boring. Don’t buy them. Just last year we got all kinds of bangers. Dead Island 2, RE4, Baldurs Gate 3, Alan Wake 2, Hi Fi Rush, Tears of the Kingdom, Lies of P, Sea of Stars, FF16, TWO Yakuza games. You can’t just play Fortnite and COD and Suicide Squad and claim gaming sucks now lol
Lmao most of the games you mentioned are not that good Gameplay creativity innovation quality was the primary element of gaming Even single player games got worse that is if you have high standards i can find some gem in this era still wont be as good Too many remakes clones lack of innovation and quality now
"Video games aren't fun anymore" *plays COD nd Fortnite 24/7* Yall games are fun, just u play mainstream games 😭 Also stop callin console "games" a games, theyre not. First 2 minutes and nothing said. You waffle way too much, you start making a point but then say we gonna talk later about that. Then don't make the point. Not to mention that you say the same thing multiple times. The beginning was very bad.

Feel that 100%. Try some indie games out if you haven’t man there’s so many good games coming out from underrated studios

I'm old enough to remember when game companies released finished (fully developed) games, sadly those days are long gone.
I know what you mean, Pong came ready to go with no loot boxes and all content from the get go. Those were the days, two lines and a dot gaming.

I bought a physical copy of youtube from the early 2000s for this very reason

That's. Basically the entire AAA industry...
Although I'd add Bethesda- they badly need to hire QA testers or fire their current ones.

Real problems..
Minor problems are still problems. Doesn't hurt anyone to talk about them
Just go play something else or find a different hobby literally nobody is holding a gun to your temple forcing to play video games.
