    Hello again Micheal! I commented on one of your videos about two years ago as I was preparing for my Atlantic Crossing crewing on a British owned cat. Your videos were very useful at the time and I have been enjoying the videos about your recent adventure. I have since that comment made the passage! We crossed to Grenada via the CVs and I ended up staying there for about a month - making great local friends and hanging out in prickly bay and hog island with the veteran Grenada cruisers. I switched boats to an old Passport 40 and sailed all the way down to Panama via the ABC's and Colombia experiencing some pretty heavy weather on the way! After I got off I spent the better part of the year hitching around South America. Now back to European life.. miss it there! I actually started working for the airline you probably fly with out to Martinique ;-). I made a great friend on my journey with who I will be crewing for in June, along the Portuguese coast on his self-built trimaran which he has sailed for 40 years now. He is an OCC member, are you familiar with them? I read you're out in Spain, where will you be in June?
    Then an enquiry into a world now far away for me: you mentioned crewed yachts and charters in your video.. I'm thinking working towards a career as charter skipper would be very enjoyable for me. Do you know a bit more about that world and where one would start (apart from getting a RYA Yachmaster!)? What were the skippers like in your marina? What is your view on such a job? What were the guests like that you would encounter? Any insight is welcome!

    • @SailingGently
      @SailingGently  ปีที่แล้ว

      Jan hi
      You've done really well with your voyaging..congratulations.. your Portuguese voyage sounds excellent. Certainly there are lots of opportunities for charter skippers in the Caribbean but frequently the jobs are offered to skippers already out there who have some years experience skippering and I suspect have a few qualifications... there is a school in Cowes IOW that runs courses for professional crew. I suspect that local knowledge is also important skippering smaller charter boats ... knowing the anchorages and places to go.
      Bit out of my area of expertise but I suspect it's difficult to get skippering work unless you have professional experience

    Ive just returned from a few nights aboard my teeny co 26 on the Dart to watch this - green eyed. No tee shirt or tanned relaxed face insight - just duvet jacket and a thousand yard stare. My wafting breeze through the cabin was a bitter northerly... Still fun though but looking forward to learning more about sailing with your next installment.

      Johnny I confess that having spent 12 years in the Med I returned to UK waters for 2 summers then moved out here to the Caribbean... A co 26 is a lovely boat and easier to keep warm in mid winter than most bigger 'modern' boats.. Well done!

    Hello Michael, May I ask what you choose Martinique among other Caribbean islands and also why Le Marin Marina in particular ?
    Thank you in advance

    • @SailingGently
      @SailingGently  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      George hi,
      Partly because it is so much cheaper than all the others. It is also the largest in the Caribbean and has better facilities and boaty infrastructure than anywhere else and because it is a domestic department of France the airfares from Paris are a good deal with lots of choice... the bay, lined with mangroves, that Le Marin is situated in is very well protected from hurricanes and the modern marina has been designed to withstand both surge and wind should the worst happen.. But the efficacy of this has to be proved!

      It may well be you could just stay here in Martinique indefinitely. Nobody has checked or stamped my passport or French resident card. I suppose if there were a problem then St Lucia, an independent state, is 20 miles away. I suspect you can, in your boat, remain as long as you want.

    Amazing. That's very helpful information. I'm curious to know how Canadians, or similarly you, are able to keep your boat there on a permanent (or semi permanent) basis. Do you have to import it? Are there restrictions on the length of time you can keep the boat there? Where do (will) you store the boat on the hard while returning home? What insurance is available locally (our underwriters won't cover below 40° N)? I'm sure you could do a whole video on importation, logistics and the 'boring' but incredibly practical and important aspects of keeping your boat abroad.

    • @SailingGently
      @SailingGently  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jordan hi,
      In almost all countries of the world you can leave/keep your boat there long term.. In EU countries you have to take it out of EU waters for 24 hours every 5 years... fairly easy to achieve and a rule that is hard for the authorities to enforce.
      The marina I have GH in is well constructed and designed to withstand 'most' hurricanes... Surge is the biggest problem so the more naturally protected the position of the marina is the better. I intend keeping her afloat all year round and have employed a local gardiennage company to visit her weekly.
      the company I have used is to insure with is Edward William Insurance www.edwardwilliam.com with the email info@edwardwilliam.com... Please mention my name....
      I am using them as I could find no viable alternative but have never made a 'claim' though them which of course is the only real test!
