    The fact that Trent Reznor developed that depth of sound and grittiness in electronic music before Pro Tools was invented makes him god tier. Of course it sounds dated, but can you even comprehend how he did that in the early 90's? Admittedly it's a little hard to listen to his early stuff as a relatively well adjusted adult, because all I'm thinking is "man, this guy is depressed!"

      NIN isn't bad, but honestly, a lot of other industrial rock/metal bands do what they do better. KMFDM, Pig, Ministry, Godflesh, White Zombie, Fear Factory, even Filter honestly. Plus, most of what NIN has done since The Fragile just ain't up my alley. Trent Reznor is also a massive dick. He hated on Chris Cornell for making "dance music" but he makes the soundtracks for animated kids movies... In general, he just seems like an arrogant douche.

      pro tools, huh? why do people think a DAW suddenly made electronic music easy? it just makes some things more convenient, but back then he was using other digital sequencers and trackers which protools to this day doesn't include. if anything a DAW hurt music creation because people started using their eyes more than their ears.

      The thing is with Nine Inch Nails, production wise they were ahead of their time, but Trents songwriting is very indebted to the 80's, which I think worked best on Pretty Hate Machine and Broken (big blunt choruses to a company big noise), but the "Closer" is the first example of the clash of the new and the old (the arrangement is nuanced but the song is still kinda big and dumb). The Fragile completely amputated their 80's tendencies

    • @michaelhaydenbell
      @michaelhaydenbell 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@darrenthetuber743 Not even sure what your point is, no offense. NIN evolved. Yep? It's perfectly fine to be one of the (in my half-joking opinion) crazy goobers who think PHM and Broken are the pinnacle of NIN material, but most would tell you that you just don't get it. And this is coming from somebody who thinks they have been pretty hit or miss for years and years now, so I'm not like a blindly loyal follower, but stuff like The Downward Spiral, Fragile, and And All That Could Have Been have some absolute MASTERPIECES on them, and it's largely thanks to a lot of the ambient and instrumental pieces in there that don't get the same attention as the singles. It's just apples and oranges and doesn't really sound like anything else out there in an awesome way. I'd bet your casual NIN fan couldn't even tell you if they've ever heard the song "Leaving Hope", and it's seriously one of the most beautiful, heart-wrenching pieces of music I have ever heard in my life, no hyperbole.
      I mean Finn also in his video right before this one defended Tool by saying he thinks Opiate is really cool. Ok cool, fair enough, but that's almost insulting when you set it against everything that went into creating an album like Lateralus that was completely unique with layers and layers to it. Equally silly take and any Tool fan would agree with me on that one too.

    Ppl have got to stop taking “closer” out of context. Of course it feels awkward or dated when you take this small small part of a much larger story and only look at it face value. And even then ppl think it’s a song about just crass debaucherous sex. And Trenthas said no, sex is the surface level vehicle used to deliver a much heavier subject of someone trying anything and everything to over compensate for their desensitization or at least find their preferred method of self destruction. Not to mention all of the actual brilliant things within the songs structure like how that piano chord progression at the end is actually all over the album in various different octaves, keys, and even played in reverse, etc. there’s so much more to TDS than the general public is willing to learn.

      Bro, closer is not a deep cut, it's one of the singles of the album. Of course it needs to be able to be judged on its own merits, the huge majority of people who have listened to this song have never listened to the whole album.

    • @twall91
      @twall91 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RafitoOoO never at any point did I say it WAS a “deep cut”. I’m fully aware of its single status. However, all of that is not to say that it can’t have depth. I was merely talking about how people butcher the songs actual meaning and gloss over it’s myriad complexities as a direct result of treating it like any other “single” that’s out there. Which is inherently wrong to do with this song specifically since It is in fact, part of a concept album, therefore immediately out of context when looking at it as a standalone single.

    NIN are one of those bands like Soundgarden where the hits often really aren't the best tunes. Some people swear by Outshined, Spoonman, Black Hole Sun - to me they're mid-tier Soundgarden. Weird and heavy albums cuts like Slaves and Bulldozers, Head Down, that's where it's at. Lots of 90's alt bands weren't really singles-oriented by nature. When they tried to go poppy (by their standards at least) it wasn't always the best stuff.

    • @michaelhaydenbell
      @michaelhaydenbell 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      That really was such a trash ass take, like NIN is one of the most versatile and groundbreaking acts out there when you have extreme industrial rock type stuff on one hand and then some of the most hauntingly beautiful, heart-wrenching instrumental ambient stuff or whatever you wanna call it on the other, you can't just point at Closer and go "this is what NIN is", that's ludicrous. As a big White Zombie fan, and general fan of Rob Zombie's existence, his solo stuff is kinda Spirit Halloweencore, like you could tell the guys in White Zombie were into horror movies and what not, but with Rob Zombie, it almost feels like you can only listen to his stuff during Halloween, it's all just a bit too dorky and over the top. I do like his first album at least, even though when it released in 1998, there was so much music that sounded like it, Static-X, Powerman 5000, The Union Underground, nu-industrial if you will. Can't forget the horny German juggernauts Rammstein either, but they at least weren't nu-metal. Also, don't tell Mr. Zombie this, but he looks like he smells like shit. Can't relate on NIN. Absolutely iconic composition and production, and in a different class compared to other industrial acts of the time. In fact, I think Skinny Puppy's entire catalog has aged FAR worse than any NIN song has. Seriously I beg you, listen to any song from Last Rights. It's a completely unlistenable album to me, not exaggerating. Their other offerings don't get much better either. I'd rather listen to a whole Gravity Kills album than sit through 1 whole Skinny Puppy song.
    This leads me to my question; did any other industrial music age better? Certainly not to me. The sounds involved can be harsh, grating, and even comical when they give off that "Home Depot, but edgy" vibe. Honestly, it's just hard to make industrial sound good, especially when you bring people's taste into the equation. That being said, NIN was at the top of the scene for a reason. Trent molded the sound into something widely accessible, yet unique. He built a successful life-long career from it as well, that should count for something. Personally I think it's easily distinguishable from similar works of the era, pretty sure that's why it doesn't sound dated to me. It may not be the most complex music, but simplicity can seem like perfection when executed properly.

    Fun fact: the heart grenade Green Day logo was designed for a skate company by Jef Whitehead of the one man black metal band, Leviathan. He's also from the same area as GD and even sorta knew them as they are in the same age group and GD started out as more of metal band before settling more towards punk rock.

    Mike Torrao was a great guitarist and his style was massively influential. While no band invents a genre, I would say Possessed's version of thrash metal bucked most of the trends at that time. Mike Sus' drumming wasn't exact and honestly was the opposite of Dave Lombardo in how off the mark it was BUT, I can't imagine the drumming being any other way. I think Torrao and Sus made 'Seven Churches' the record we love today. Their second album though was...and then the 'Eyes of Horror' EP in 1987 was good but no one was still following Possessed at that point.
