The Queen does the hiring and firing as the GG works for HER, NOT Canada and it's why the GG gives the speech from the Throne, because the GG speaks for the Queen.

When the Queen can communicate with her subjects all around the globe and accross Canada almost instantly with modern technology, it is completely unnecessary to have a person such as this as representative of the crown. It is a waste of tax dollars and resources to have a governor general representing the crown when the crown has instant communication capabilities with Canada and Canadian citizens.

Laying out the "role" of gg most certainly does NOT mean the "PATRONAGE ROLE" is necessary or needed. More recently, the monarchy has changed. The relationship of the two countries IS ALSO CHANGED. The new monarchy and entire monarchy family, are just surfing on the old traditions. There is no true "meaning" to the past anymore.
Canada doesn't need to be told or account to anyone else about our DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED GOVERNMENT .....so long as it can function without outside interference .....which needs to be monitored EXTERNALLY from ALL government influence.
This gg position is a very costly "PATRONAGE ROLE", that has been proven to be very questionable cost to CANADIAN TAXPAYERS ....and fundamentally offers nothing to CANADIAN's benefit.

Well after this, no one will ever need to speak French to be in the Canadian government again. The precedent has been set and hundreds of years of tradition have been reversed.

The position of Governor General should always go to an indigenous communities member to reflect the history.
The history of what? Maybe the job should go to someone qualified regardless of their ethnicity you racist. Better yet the job could just be abolished altogether as it serves no purpose in the year 2021.

The position of Governor General shouldn't exist anymore, as we are no longer a British Colony, and we aren't subject to the Queen's rule.
It's nothing more than a waste of taxpayers money to keep around these relics of the past, who are worthless.
We are still, in effect a British Colony, though we've been given a small amount of autonomy. Read Article 9 of the Constituttion which clearly makes the Queen the Boss. Look up the definition of "executive authority".
Even though canada is an independent country we still have to live in the British rules

Ceremonial position. She meets foreign dignitaries, reads the speech opening every session of the House of Commons, hands out the GG Awards, etc. And the PM has to go to her/him for permission to call an election, otherwise known as dropping the writ.

@@annonaQOC Because it’s required in almost all federal government positions. Britain is not a bi-lingual country but Canada officially is. There is even an Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages. And BTW, the Queen does speak fluent French.
