That's absolutely true. Andrew Jackson threatened South Carolina with military action during the Nullification Crisis. In doing so he reaffirmed the powers of the Union and also neutralized temporarily one of the factors that 35 or so years later would serve as a spark for the Civil War. This would establish and strengthen American credit, allowing the US to facilitate a large trade deficit for purposes of importing the capital necessary to develop the US's massive natural resources. Hamilton's plan was an unbelievable success. 1790 to 1800 was a massive success period, average earnings increased by 30%, the economy doubled in size, debt to revenue massively shrank. Say what you will, this was incredible and saved the US.
