I think you are exactly right. Its a matter of taste. If you want full-time shred, then yeah, Syu; but if you want melody and composition with the shred, then Hizaki, hands down. Just on technical skill on frets, I think the slight edge is Syu, incredibly beautiful finger skills, but a total work of art is its composure and there, Hizaki is the King's Queen!
I have to say Syu and maybe it's because I've been listening to Galneryus/Spinalcord for almost 10 years, but I think Syu is more technical although he's not known for it. Syu is definitely a more balanced player in terms of style from the videos you showed us. SYU - my number one guitarist!
Syu has a vibe of Uli Jon Roth I noticed it the first time I heard the band, than I realized he had an extended scale guitar and scalloped fretboard at the last frets, he sounds very proficient in his playing with great feel that reverberate through and through, Hizaki is a very good player who seem to play by ear like myself and sometimes doesn't make it to the pitch more raw of a player I'd say, but it also makes him sound more genuine, we all love raw players don't we? I love hizaki and I'm going for him but syu is so nasty with it especially how he expresses his body and face with the music... the crowd was flowing with him it was awesome... still, hizaki!!!!!!!
Yeah I agree Syu all the way. I love both Galneryus and Versailles/Jupiter but strictly going off of ability/technique, Syu is one of the very best in the world. Hizaki is also a world class guitarist in his own right but almost no one can play at Syu's level. As far as musicality in terms of composition goes they are too different to compare directly. Both are the primary songwriters of truly one-of-a-kind epic bands but, as you said, Syu is only getting better with every album Galneryus puts out. Vetelgyus is fucking awesome. The History of Genesis is also fucking awesome, and I was glad that Jupiter started branching out a little more on this album. A lot of the songs on the album are very different stylistically from what Versailles/Jupiter has done before. Darkness from this album along with Forever With You from Classical Element are two of my favorite Versailles/Jupiter songs. So it's not that their band isn't also improving as a whole, it's just that Ganeryus's improvement is much more noticable. I would like to point out that I'm not dissing Hizaki in any way; both him and Syu live on top of the Mount Olympus of the guitar world, shooting lightning bolts out of the end of their instruments raining destruction down on the land below. In correlation to their guitar prowess Hizaki may be Hercules, but Syu is fucking Zues. If they had a true guitar duel and swapped solos until one admitted defeat, Syu would beat Hizaki like Ralph Macchio beat Steve Vai in Crossroads.
I can't agree no one, paul gilberts old ass can play at syus level and one of the only few that can... paul gilbert is a guitar god. But I love both Syu and Hizakis playing I wont choose between these 2
they are a incredible neoclassical metal guitarists, but the big difference is that Syu represents the 60% of power of Galneryus and they are very focused on him, and the case of Hizaki, he is simply another part of his band because the other members are very talented like him.
Both styles are insanely good. Syu Is more technical, and can make you cry in high speed sequences while making legendary hymns. Hizaki Is more melodic, and takes his movements and his postures as a form of expression, while Is playing melodies that can touch your heart very easily, the classical style Is more than evident here.
Both area good, BUT......Hizaki at the most the time have Teru playing guitar with him and Syu is a only Guitarist on the band and carry with the all harmonic sound of the guitar.
Syu is an amalgamation of all the metal from Scandinavia paired with the essence of Malmsteen. But the soul he puts into it is unmatched. Megadeth solos are sweet, but you don't feel the same emotion as you would with Syu. I'd say that the only guitarist really comparable to the solos that Syu pumps out would he John Petrucci. But even then, Syu clears because of how many solos that he has that are pure fire.
There's no doubt that Syu is the technical master of it's genre, probably more experienced, simply brilliant and i listen to him and his music regularly... I've listened to ALOT of power, neoclasical, opera, heavy, progressive, black, death metal bands, and i like them all and they have place in my heart and they bring nostalgia BUT Versailles... for me it's like the kind of music that could come only from my wildest dreams, in some songs, everything, to the tiniest detail is 100 % as i would like, even the faults and roughness. The apparent "in-human" lack of emotion on faces that in contrast goes perfectly with emotional bomb that is visual, choreographic and musical style combined ... it's sort of like rebellion to standards that i've got so accustomed to. In short, from my perspective i listen Syu, (and Malmsteen and others) to be in awe and jump around, but Versailles when i need dreams, inspiration and food for my soul... if that makes any sense to you?? xD
From watching them live and their Vids you can tell they have different styles and patterns in their riffs, tempo, harmony, etc. Both are skillful but different in artistry, showmanship, styles and genre in their music. So both are incomparable. Its like comparing Apples to Oranges. So this is a Dumb Down question! People love comparing things that are different they always forgot that each and everyone are unique in their very own way. That's how stupid and idiotic most people are.
Here's how I look at it. Hizaki focuses more on actually playing, and playing damn good. While syu, is focusing on having more fun with it, and feeling the music. I mean both are amazing guitarist and the epitome of power metal. But hizaki is definitely more focused on just playing and shredding, and syu is seen closing his eyes, and getting into it, and having fun with his playing.
Syu is far better. He has better feeling, speed and technics. Syu play guitar like it was a part of his body, nothing seems to be impossible to him, Hizaki is less natural when he play, he seems to be concentrated to play even when the level is under Syu's one. It's like comparing an Audi TT with a Lamborghini Veneno. The two are excellent, but one is far better :)
Galneryus does have some really beautiful cool songs like Across the Rainbow and Angel of Salvation the lives are really cool Very cool and beautiful guitar solos❤
Am I the only one that actually likes Teru more than Hizaki? In the majority of their more technical songs (Ascendead Master, Faith & Decision, Silent Knight, Love From a Dead Orchestra, etc) Teru is one that always shined the most to me. I feel that Hizaki is MUCH better at creating riffs, but in terms of soloing Teru has him beat.
+Vanegaku Honestly, I think Hizaki is more popular simply because he looks like a woman. Hizaki reuses a lot of the same phrases/licks in a lot his solos, whereas Teru seems to be much more diverse. Watch "DESTINY" live to see how diverse Teru's playing is compared to Hizaki.
I just listened to "Ascendead Master" because of your remark, and you're right. He's way better. But still both can't compete with Syu. (I have to admit that I have never heard any of them before. And stylistically they all aren't my cup of tea.)
This is a comparison of two different sub-genre of power metal, both in composicion and passing. I believe both musicians are farely talented and capable of prowes while improvising there solos, but what changes is how much freedom does de composition of each song is giving them. Usually melodic power metal with progressive variation gives more room to experimentation, although not a riggid genre, symphonic metal maybe less flexible, also they are doing their theatricals which tales more work and energy.

Chris Cannon Finally! Someone who knows their shit!
I can't agree no one, paul gilberts old ass can play at syus level and one of the only few that can... paul gilbert is a guitar god. But I love both Syu and Hizakis playing I wont choose between these 2
Jose Andujar Why is Paul Gilbert's "Old Ass" in the discussion? You could've have said Paul Gilbert only.
Both of these guitarist are the best of the best!
syu better than slash
papa .jo What kind of comparison is that? Syu is neoclassical and Slash is glam rock, makes no sense to compare them.

I love Hisaki, but Syu is better!
they are a incredible neoclassical metal guitarists, but the big difference is that Syu represents the 60% of power of Galneryus and they are very focused on him, and the case of Hizaki, he is simply another part of his band because the other members are very talented like him.
have u ever listen to the force of courage by galneryus? they r all talented
The others are as Skilled like him
Music is a very good way to connect with people.

I've listened to ALOT of power, neoclasical, opera, heavy, progressive, black, death metal bands, and i like them all and they have place in my heart and they bring nostalgia
BUT Versailles...
for me it's like the kind of music that could come only from my wildest dreams, in some songs, everything, to the tiniest detail is 100 % as i would like, even the faults and roughness. The apparent "in-human" lack of emotion on faces that in contrast goes perfectly with emotional bomb that is visual, choreographic and musical style combined ... it's sort of like rebellion to standards that i've got so accustomed to.
In short, from my perspective i listen Syu, (and Malmsteen and others) to be in awe and jump around, but Versailles when i need dreams, inspiration and food for my soul...
if that makes any sense to you?? xD
Syu has a much superior technical ability but Hizaki has more memorable melodies
Hizaky is the best
Sorry to ask you this but what about a Eva Vergilova vs Juliette Valduriez guitar battle video? Who do you think would win it?
Galneryus does have some really beautiful cool songs like Across the Rainbow and Angel of Salvation the lives are really cool Very cool and beautiful guitar solos❤

Que duelo extraordinário entre dois guitarristas 🌹🌹
Am I the only one that actually likes Teru more than Hizaki? In the majority of their more technical songs (Ascendead Master, Faith & Decision, Silent Knight, Love From a Dead Orchestra, etc) Teru is one that always shined the most to me.
I feel that Hizaki is MUCH better at creating riffs, but in terms of soloing Teru has him beat.
teru is my fav haha
+Vanegaku
Honestly, I think Hizaki is more popular simply because he looks like a woman. Hizaki reuses a lot of the same phrases/licks in a lot his solos, whereas Teru seems to be much more diverse. Watch "DESTINY" live to see how diverse Teru's playing is compared to Hizaki.
+Wheelio I really like a video called Teru the super guitarrist, they're playing Revenant choir in that One. I'll watch destiny :)
I think that Hizaki is more "melodic power metal with progressive variation" and Syu is "symphonic metal",that is right?
Only Syu ! Maestro
