In the 1971 movie "DUEL," the Peterbilt 281 truck serves as a menacing and relentless antagonist, looming large on the screen with its imposing presence. A symbol of mechanical power and unyielding force, the Peterbilt 281 becomes a character in its own right, instilling fear and unease in viewers. With its gleaming rusty grimy grille, roaring engine, and colossal size, the truck inflicts an embodiment of terror as it relentlessly pursues the protagonist's car, showcasing the raw and unrelenting power of the open road. Its distinctive appearance and unwavering pursuit make the Peterbilt 281 an iconic and unforgettable element of the movie, leaving a lasting impression on audiences.

I first saw this movie around 1976 as a 12 year old and is probably one of the reasons I've been driving a tanker truck for the last 25 years.😁

@@jeffbyrnes3686 I recall watching these channels through COVID before the vaccines and coming out of COVID (again, before vaccines were out there for the masses) and people were driving CRAZILY as seen on dashcam. The early theory was that people were cooped up so long, they did not know how to 'act' once the lockdowns eased up. I feel that COVID slightly altered our brains for the worse. I am fairly certain the vaccines did, too, so they could be a reason why we have continued our crazy driving long after being cooped up would still have any mental effect on us.

The Primary Truck for this movie was a 57. 281... The second rig used for the movie was a 64...THAT truck was a real 351.. The 60 Pete ( the only surviving truck left from the movie ) is a 281 I know this because i am the former owner of the 60 ( one of the pix you have of the 60 is it sitting in my driveway here in Burbank CA )

The film that got Spielberg's movie career up and running. Overshadowed by his later work, but still a minor classic. The truck is a bit like the Barris car featured on this channel recently - evil manifested as a machine adversary. This is a great top ten.

Way back in high school, I knew someone who had a similar Plymouth Valiant that he paid $125 for and beat it to death. We were bouncing it off snow banks one afternoon when we noticed flames poking out from under the hood. Pulled over, popped the hood and tossed snow on it, fixed a leaky gas line, cranked it up and kept on going. This movie always makes me think of that.

There are some clearly visible differences between the 1955 Peterbilt 281 and the 1964 Peterbilt 351 in this movie:
    1) The box that is placed at the back of the Peterbilt 281 cab is attached directly to it, while that one of the Peterbilt 351 has a base.
    2) In the vast majority of scenes the Peterbilt 281 doesn't have visible trailer cables or air lines, while the Peterbilt 351 does; they're placed on a vertical support on the chassis, between the cab and the trailer.
    3) The trailer is hitched further from the Peterbilt 351 cab than the Peterbilt 281 cab, due to the Peterbilt 351's longer chassis.
    4) The Peterbilt 281 doesn't have rear mud flaps, but you can see that the Peterbilt 351 has two Kenworth rear mud flaps fitted.
    Kind regards.

Today on the way to work a bigrig decided I wasn't going fast enough and pulled to about a foot behind my car on the highway... I just ignored him and when we went uphill he lost speed due to being fully loaded and never caught up. Then we both passed a highway patrol car at the side of the road but the truck was so far back everything looked normal. Didn't stop, gotta get to work...

The lesson of the movie is that humans are just one close step away from the "jungle", as the Dennis Weaver character calls it in the movie. And he's right. Humans will kill humans with very little provocation, even in our modern world.

So the scariest truck to ever be seen on film that can run faster then lower class dodge dart unless the dart was equipped with 360 v8 that help it getaway but no one noticed one plot hole of radiator hose need to replace as stated earlier in the movie is why it overheated when going up hill scene anyway thanks for the video and have a weakened bye now.
