The Royal Palace is the official residence of Norway’s King and Queen. Built over 100 years ago, the Royal Palace is a daily workplace of the Royal Court. Palace tours are also available but the most popular event in Oslo is the Changing of the Royal Guard lead by a Norwegian Military Band and mounted police officers.
This ceremony takes place daily at 13:30 or some of us refer to it at 1:30 PM. The changing of the guard is a ceremonial routine performed by His Majesty The King’s Guard, similar to Buckingham Palace in London, this military guard that gives protection for the Royal Family 24/7.
One certain days, the guard may participate in a parade and drill display that begins at the Akershus Fortress beginning at 1Pm all the way to the Royal Palace for the changing of the guard beginning at 1:30
As the parade and drill marches up Karl Johans gate and ending in front of the Royal Palace. During the summer, mounted police officers and the military band lead the guards through the streets of Oslo.
The Changing of the Guard is when the on duty are relieved by a new guard. The whole process takes about 40 minutes and doesn’t have much spunk but it is worth adding to your Oslo itinerary.
