The icing on a cake is nothing but sweet candy fluff without the underlying cake. What he is saying the cake must be good and cannot be covered up by the icing. Too often it is usually opinion of some "like" that assumes the basics are all correct. Perhaps it is everyone just knows everything and it is all good. Perhaps it is affectation of snobbery. But maybe too often it is icing that gets the attention and not the cake.
Kimball, making music is more than good acoustics and mechanics, but it's never less. If the fundamentals are defective performing become more work than joy, and more effort, robbing you of the needed attention and energy for artistry and inspiration.
