    I get a real satisfaction out of seeing the restoration outcomes. I suppose a lot of trade-offs have to be made when you're restoring at this level, authenticity vs acceptable aesthetic outcome. The rear lens restoration was amazing. would love to see it illuminated in the dark :)

      @MikesRestorations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks cielobuio
      It sure is a trade off at times..The good news is Porsche classic just released a new line of early turn signal lenses.
      I can't wait to see what the quality and comparison of the NOS lens will be.
      Ill keep you posted!

    Hi Mike. Love the videos! Another problem in addition to fit is wear. I've found some aftermarket lenses tend to get cloudy after years of being on the car compared to original lenses. Keep up the great work!

      Thanks John, Yes they could show aging quicker as the plastics were higher quality back in those days

    Looks amazing! You can't tell the difference between the restored one and the new one. You make it look easy.

      Its not bad for an old lens..however not able to do much with the cracks..will have to live with those for awhile

    It’s the little details that make a difference Mike, and you are a master of them. Dull or faded lens on an otherwise great restoration has always bothered me. Great video, and great work!

    Great video Mike. Lights can definitely make or break the vehicle and you clearly highlighted some weak points in aftermarket Porsche parts

      Yes its a painful part of restoration getting the quality we need to do the job..
      Its hard to get there with such under developed parts

    Hi great video. What kind of glue did you use to fix the gasket in place ?

    • @MikesRestorations
      @MikesRestorations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Subhas
      The glue is made by Permatex..it is a contact cement by design called super weather strip adhesive.
      A must for your tool box!
      Cheers!

    Every time I watch one of your videos Mike, I realize all the ways I screwed up when I did the equivalent on mine! I have the original US spec lights but had to change to the orange/red spec (and RHD headlights) when I imported the car to Japan: cost a crazy amount out of the UK and fit is sub-par. But "shioganai" as they say here, "can't be avoided."

      Hello John
      Your car is beautiful!
      There is just so many details on these cars that catch us eventually..
      I can imagine those lenses were quite expensive! but not much choice when it comes to the quality..
      They got us for sure!!

    Hi Mike, I really like that you are so meticulous. Is there a video also where you show how to restore the plastic, how you use the rubbing substance and the polish machine?

    • @MikesRestorations
      @MikesRestorations  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Fredrik
      I don't have anything in particular showing how to restore plastic but I show something done with compounds on the next video with should be helpful for you.
      Will be up this weekend as soon as its gone thru editing!

    Love the fine detail. I agree about lens quality, when I was younger, looking in VW catalogs for bug parts I thought I got good deals with low price , until they arrived! ,then comparing oem to aftermarket I learned why aftermarket parts cost less.

      Hello Amundsen
      Yes the After market can be tough... Amazing though some of the reproduction parts are incredible top quality..
      Not sure why they would even bother if they can get it right..Its a mystery?

    Great video! Where did you source and purchase the brass sleeve (3/16” brass sleeve)?

    • @MikesRestorations
      @MikesRestorations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Tony
      I sorted the brass sleeves locally by going thru the misc parts bins at a hardware store named McFaddendales here in Las Vegas
      Good Luck!

    Another great video, your attention to detail and clarity of mind for the task at hand is impressive. A lot of the warnings I would never think of and have to learn the hard way.
    What paint did you spray on the lenses? Do you have any recommendations for acceptable quality front turn signal housings?

    • @MikesRestorations
      @MikesRestorations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello ss Thanks
      Defiantly a lot of red flags on these lights..
      I think a good quality lens with an original housing that still maintains a decent chrome would be acceptable
      also re-chromed original housing defiantly would Loog great but depends on the condition prior to re-chroming and shop selected.
      After market housings would look great if you are okay with modern wire sockets
      The paint was duplicolor chrome: available in our new store under the painting section. www.amazon.com/shop/mikesrestorations

    Ordered front turn signal lenses from aase and discovered they no longer carry the expensive exact copies. Furthermore, they have only ONE and when it's gone-that is it. No plans from the Danish manufacturer to make another run. My question is this, on my '68 front lenses one of the reflectors appears zinc coated. The other reflector in the housing is mirror like. Does the dull zinc plated reflector stay dulled, or was it bright at one time like the other? Since your video did not show the fronts being redone, I'm not sure what is correct.

    • @MikesRestorations
      @MikesRestorations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello gj
      Sorry for the long reply..for some reason your message was sent to a spam folder..
      Originally the inside of the housings were a dull chrome finish and the reflectors had a mirror type foil applied to them. The foil was like a gold leaf in thickness and eventually flaked off leaving bare zinc to do the reflecting.
      I found the aluminum foil tape to do quite a good job for re-covering the reflectors and also should last much longer than the original thin foils they used

    Hey again Mike. Forgot to ask, what 2k clear coat did you use for the real light. Blown away at the result.

      Was PPG Deltron 2k..but I imagine any 2k clear would bring the same results

    Nice work on the lighting Mike! I think European spec rear lenses are available from Porsche. But something tells me you are going for an original US spec look... ;)

      Not for that age car anymore. Afterall, in a small bump, what gets destroyed first ? That is why they used up nearly all the early 60's parts like these.

    • @MikesRestorations
      @MikesRestorations  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Graham..Your right! thats why they are tough to get anymore

      Hello Feeesh
      Thanks..I think the Euro lights actually look to be better quality in general..US specs needs some work on those tail lights!

    I noticed all of your electrical connections, look old/dry/some corrosion do you use conductive grease? Dis-similar metals do eat one another through electrolysis especially when electricity and moisture are present. I use conductive grease on every connector and bulbs socket.

    • @MikesRestorations
      @MikesRestorations  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello cmscms..You bring up a good point!
      Yes sticking with original sockets and connections that have been reworked. I actually removed the clip in this video talking about coating electrical contacts because the video was becoming to long..
      I did however include the dialog in the fuel tank installation video at the plug in there. Principal would be the same in all cases.
      I use a very thin film of general purpose petroleum grease to prevent corrosion and aid with connections that are tight.
      The key is thin film. Put it on & wipe it off..
      I stopped using silicone greases on metal to metal applications as Ive had to many issues with it.
      Although for a plug in contact it would be fine.

    Howdy Mike. Just about to shoot you an email about a thermoplastic acrylic lacquer I am using on plating so will never dull or corrode. Anyone else interested I can post up details here also. It's part of what came with my plating kit here in Australia :). Rob.

    I posted the German link to Mike a few videos back. I've only found in Germany not one but a number of companies who restore the inside (the mirror) of headlights and used reflektorklinik myself.
    www.reflektorklinik.de/fotostories
    There MUST be someone in the US of A who does that sort of work as its not a particularly expensive machine thats needed. The process is called PVD and its how modern (plastic) car lights are made shiny.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_vapor_deposition
    This is only for the inside of car lights so Mike's comments about how difficult it is to restore the rears are of course correct :)
