  • In this video, we learn about the Eurasian nuthatch.
    QUICK FACTS
    • Lifespan: 2-3.5 years (average); 10 years (maximum)
    • Length: 5.5 in
    • Wingspan: 8.9-10.6 in
    • Weight: 0.5-0.9 oz
    • Family: Sittidae
    Description
The Eurasian nuthatch, also known as the wood nuthatch, is a small passerine bird of the nuthatch family, Sittidae. It is blue-grey above and it has a distinctive black eye stripe. The coloration of the underparts varies from white to pale orange, depending on the subspecies. The undertail is typically rusty-red with mottled white spots. Females are similar but paler overall, with brown eye stripes.
    Vocalizations: Call and song
They are vocal birds with a loud, sharp, single-note dweep common call. It also has a shrill alarm call. The song is comprised of a series of whistling notes.
    Range
The species is found across Palearctic Europe and Asia, from Britain to Japan. They are largely sedentary, but some populations migrate for the winter, depending on climate and food availability.
    Habitat
Wood nuthatches inhabit mature deciduous and mixed woodlands. They are also found in parks, old orchards, coniferous mountain forests, and other wooded habitats.
    Diet and feeding habits
They feed mainly on insects, especially beetles and caterpillars. During winter, they also eat nuts and seeds. Wood nuthatches are fairly common visitors to garden feeders.
    Nesting and breeding
Nuthatches are monogamous, but extra-pair mating does occur. They nest in tree holes in large, old trees. Females lay 6 to 9 speckled white eggs, but the clutch can comprise as many as 13 eggs. They incubate the eggs for up to 18 days, and the nestlings fledge roughly three weeks after hatching. They remain dependent on their parents about two weeks later.
    Status and conservation
The Eurasian nuthatch has an extensive and expanding geographic range and a large global population. Localized declines can be attributed to habitat fragmentation. The species is classified as “least concern” by the IUCN.
