All my life I've only seen boomerangs in cartoons and video games, today it just occurred to me I could see a real one on TH-cam, and here I am, it's as impressive as I had imagined

I actually think I was unconsciously singing that song, "My boomerang won't come back," when I decided to read about why/how it came back. From the description, I KNEW that I was probably throwing it wrong in the first place. I never had a nice one, always those plastic, garbage Wham--o things.

For people who are wondering... the reason why it is quite easy to catch is because it starts running out of power by the time it reaches you and almost hoovers like a helicopter as it drops down into your arms. The challenge is trying not to throw it too hard and too high/low. It just takes some practice before it works smooth and easy like Vic. We found that having a border collie was very handy for retrieving the ones that go astray 😊.

I have to say, that's pretty impressive. I can remember as a child, my father bought me a boomerang. I never had much luck getting it to return. One day I walked out the front door of the house, wound up and sent it flying, it curled around, came right back towards me, then right through the side window of the den. Needless to say my boomerang days were over after that, never saw it again.
Similar story here. My first was at age 10 and I accidentally hit a friend in the head. Dad took it away and never threw another till I was in my late thirties lol. Now look at me.
Me too. My dad has a boomerang he bought as a teenager from Mudgeeraba Australia and showed me how to use it when I was about 10. I threw it correctly and it returned well and hit me square in the stomach and I started crying. Now I’m in my 30s now and I found his boomerang again. Going to give it another shot, hope I catch it this time.
I've never thrown a boomerang, but I did throw a frisbee at night once. I threw it straight ahead on a 45º degree angle upwards. It disappeared into the darkness and I lost sight of it. A few seconds later came back along the exact same path about twice as fast as it went up. It hit me in the chest and knocked me over haha. Didn't hurt much, but I was quite surprised.

@@Retroist2024 If a returning boomerang is a weapon then I guess a baseball, football and frisbee would also be considered a weapon correct? I only consider a hunting boomerang to be a weapon like the Kylie. It is a non returning boomerang.

When I was a kid I had a toy boomerang that never "worked", so as an adult on one random evening I had the sudden urge to find out if boomerangs actually did what everyone said they do. This video satisfied my curiosity. Thank you.
I also had the same issue as a child. It was a plastic Whamm-o. It did return but only with a lot of wind. Not even sure if I was throwing it correctly it was so long ago lol.
Had one of those plastic ones as a kid too. Older brother was playing with it. Sharp edges hit my little brother on the face and needed stitches. Mom outlawed them from then on lol

My late-friend (RIP) owned a boomerang once, but unfortunately for my us, this boomerang experience was abrubtly short-lived...
When we were 15, we went to a park where we came to this tall, wide blossoming tree and he wanted to see if he could throw his boomerang to go around the tree and come back to him.
Anyway, that didn't happen...
Instead, he threw it towards the top of tree which got stuck on top of a birds nest high up and a mere 11 years later, it still remains up there.
Seeing this video has inspired me to look at getting a boomerang!

When I was younger I got to learn how to throw one from an outback community in Australia, while it is easy enough go throw it and have it come back - using it to hunt as intended takes a whole different level of skill.

It looks like it slows down or something at the very end. I never knew that.
I had always imagined that it didn't and you'd end up with severed fingers or get hit in the eye or something violent like that.
I was given one as a kid (like a 5 or 6 year old) in the 70's and I was terrified of it thinking I'd lose my fingers.
I wonder if it had anything to do with that scene from Mad Max movie where the kid trow the boomerang and cut the hand or finger of the enemy guy...

You are very welcome. Little tip is not all boomerang require a small breeze even if they are the same exact design. If one has a small twist or bend that the other does not than it will fly different. Some boomerang need no breeze at all. So basically if it lands out in front of you then yes you need a small breeze.

I got these boomerangs through Amazon and went to this park in California just throwing and catching them.....Everyone was looking at me and I felt a little self conscious...Was fun though...it's an amazing feeling throwing a boomerang and watching it go far away only to come back to you and land right in your hands.
I'm more surprised that you found boomerangs on amazon that actually worked. There are so many non returners on there and only a few legit sellers. You got lucky my friend.
@@VictorPoulin Yeah, this was a few years back. They were the Channel Craft boomerang series. They had three types according to weight. My favorite was the Spirit Of The Earth boomerang. Trust me, no one was more surprised than me when the thing actually came right back to me. I did practice a lot and the only downside was a little bit of wind would throw the lighter ones off so easily. Other than that it was quite an experience.

Except the first 2:25 is actually useful. And I'm pretty sure that's why alot of ppl are here, cause it's a "How to...." video afterall. It's not easy at all to throw a boomerang (he makes it look easy)
muhangis I think many people watching this doesn't really care about the tutorial part, they just want to see how a boomerang works. I just wondered how it comes back and this was the top video, all I wanted to see was that 5 sec part not all that talking lol.

I came here for that 5 sec. but still I hit the like button when I first watched it, because it had what the name suggested. I don't know why would anyone come and dislike this knowing what it is about and how long the video is even before clicking.

I’m blown away by the fact that it literally stops and falls right back in to your hands. How does it know where you are?
Good question, first thing is the boomerang and I go over all the rules. Don't go too far from home and you have to come right back when I tell you to. No flying with other booms that will get you into trouble, and lastly no drinking and flying.
Just kidding buddy, The boomerang does not actually know where I am but I can somewhat predict where it will end up by how I throw it. The boomerang starts out flying slightly off of vertical. As it goes around it is slowly going into a horizontal position. It turns in flight due to the trail edge. Same idea as an airplane wing when air travels over the top of the wing pushing it down on the opposite edge. You want to throw the boomerang with just enough power to get it back to you. Not too much and not too little.
