  • In Episode 103 of Truck House Life, I'll show you my real job since I don't make enough money off TH-cam to survive. Luckily, I have a crazy job that took me to Barrow, Alaska on the Arctic Ocean, the northernmost town in the USA. I flew to Barrow to give drivers' licenses to the local Alaskan villagers (as long as they were good enough to pass the road test). Oh, and we'll go check out the most expensive grocery store in the USA while we're there! Welcome to my life.

Barrow looks like one of those towns where the local sherrif is also the local car mechanic, and also the local real estate agent, and also the mayor.

That’s great that DMV does remote testing now. When I turned 16 in Hoonah, I went to the cop shop, took my written test and got my off-systems license. That fall, Oregon traded me for a full license. Never had a driving test.
And Sam Lees, over a plate of French fries, is where I fell in love with the woman who would become my wife. We celebrate 22 years in a few weeks.

I hope they make a lot of money. I have 4 kids and I probably spend around $180 on groceries every week. That store was about 4x more expensive. I saw a TH-cam video ("Somers in Alaska") where they visited Barrow for a job(the videograher owns an HVAC company in North Pole, AK, a suburb of Fairbanks). He interviewed an attendant at the local gas station who told him that his salary is around US$ 100,000. a year! So, most salaries are much higher because the cost of living is so high in Barrow. Also, just about everything is flown in and the transportation cost is high. There are some barges that come in for a few months in the summer when the sea is ice free.

At least Hawaii has a climate that's condusive to growing fruit and ppl can grow things in their own gardens
A lot of the inflated prices there has to do with politics that for TLDR reasons won't allow local produce to be sold in stores, and it really sucks.

Your life is full of adventure & choices. I have a long time friend since was 14 & they moved to Anchorage 35+ years ago as Federal Probation Officer. Could not get the Bottled 6oz. Coke so would send it to them. Yes the prices are much higher & the Food, oh gee to high. There are spin off's anywhere one lives. My grocery store is 50 miles from home base but the local gas/market is 1 mile. So for the price hike in buying there verses 100 mile round trip to big grocery store is saved over fuel cost. Amazing how they get those big planes in small areas. Safe Travels, Always, Tommy :-)

Pretty awesome! I live in a village on the Yukon River in the Interior. We dont even have a bank, restaurant or NAPA. Just a post office, small grocery/fuel store and a hardware store. All our prices are almost identical to Barrow.

Pretty cool being able to see some of the more remote parts of the state and to get paid to do it. I’ve always wanted to visit Barrow but have never had the opportunity.

You can drive there , from Prudhoe Bay in winter months only. I lived in Barrow for 28 years. Went to Barrow High School, Class of '86. Rollagone trails easiest way from Prudhoe .

I lived in Barrow when I was young. The prices really are that high. It’s super hard to afford a full cart of groceries. Gas is even higher

Those food prices are really hard to wrap your head around lol. Happy 4th and thanks for taking us to work. That was interesting and the places that you come across Napa hahaha. The Chinese food wasn't as bad as I was expecting as it is not much more than here on the East Coast.
