Is It Over?

  • Well, Evil Geniuses’ CS:GO roster is in the news again. And, this time, it really is because of Stewie. Or, at least, about Stewie.
Last week, a member of EG’s former coaching staff did a tell-all interview where he alleged that antagonisms between he, Stew and head coach maLeK were essentially the root cause of the roster’s highly publicized failure to perform.
It was super spicy -- and all over social media -- which drove Stew to stream a steamy tell-all of his own. There’s a lot to break down, so we’re going to walk you through it step-by-step.

I feel Stew shouldn't be in the IGL position to begin with. Let him be entry or a rifler etc. rather than let him call the shots and lead his team. I think it distracted him from his game and his performance reflects that too.

Totally agree. In c9, there is Tarik to IGL, and in liquid, there is nitro as IGL. And at least in the late liquid era, Fallen does IGL. Even in old C9, although he is the IGL, he HAS to listen to others like nothing and ska since he is too young at that time.
Also, he should be support/lurker player accompanied with a tons of player who is a top rifler. Ska, Auti, Tarik and Rush in major winning C9, Elige, Twistzz and NAF in liquid. Now take a look at their team, only Brezhe is a pass, Cerq is terrible, other two is too old.

personally to me, stewie has never been an igl player. hes always been a fragger.
i think his attitude of wanting to win helps him be more successful as a fragger than as a captain who has to go down with the ship when something goes wrong.
i firmly believe that hes fit for eg, its just somebody else has to step up and take his role of igl, so that stew could perform at his best.

I love Stewie, but he is a professional esports athlete that lacks significant levels of professionalism. It doesn't matter that he wants to go back and fix things, start now. Find out what you aren't doing, find out how you are most negatively affecting the team and org, and take steps to fix it. Or he will say the same thing in another 12 months with a different team.

Even as Kobe Bryant said,"it's not about you as the teammate, it's about the team". You have to find out what the problem is and fix it. That's why you are the IGL. There are a lot of reasons that Dimitri is my favorite host on the channel, but probably the biggest one is that you can tell that he genuinely cares about the scene and the individuals that he's talking about. The endboard clip shows that well...not even wanting to make a joke or a plug or show bloopers, just acknowledging the sadness of the situation he just covered. He remains professional while letting his passion for the game shine through. Well presented and much appreciated as always.
Bottom line for the topic: Stewie has always had a hot head and needs to get it together. That's not a criticism or a judgement, it's just a fact. If he's going to continue to be a part of esports, a list of accomplishments doesn't mean much if he can't demonstrate that he's going to be able to work well with another team.

Stew has shot himself in the foot, the biggest thing that stuck out to me was “I’m willing to do anything to win” immediately followed up with “I know my attitude can be an issue”. He was the one doing the mid round calls for TL when nitr0 was IGL. He was the one doing midround calls on C9 when they won their major. There's a reason why teams always kept Stewie and removed the IGL. He was always the one who made the crucial calls for the 2 best teams in NA CSGO history, one of which was the best team that NA has ever seen and one of the most dominant teams across any region. nitr0 did the "strats" if you could call it that as they were literally just shooting people in the head and winning while Stewie was the one actually doing calls in the mid round. Although Stewie might not have been the IGL in name when either of the teams were successful, he was most definitely the leader of the team.
Now whether he can do that better from an actual IGL position or when he's just a rifler or entryfragger and doesn't have the same amount of pressure on him as he would as the IGL to do those calls is an entirely different thing, but it remains a fact that IGL or not, he was most of the brain behind the 2 best NA teams. If I were to guess it's that it's exactly that. He just works a bit better when the onus isn't on him to do the calling and he has more freedom and can call when he feels it's right rather than being expected to call in every scenario.

This is when I felt afraid for stewie that he’s pulling himself down and being too self-critical. I don’t want to speak for the guy, so i can only describe what I got from watching that, and that is it feels like he’s carrying so much unnecessary burden for himself to resolve alone. It’s one thing to blame everyone for all your shortcomings (which i’m not accusing him of), but blaming yourself for everything can be toxic too. That’s why organizations are very willing to get behind great talent like him. Financial gain aside, they also know that it will be destructive for everyone-the player, the team, and the management-if he would employ the mentality that he has to do everything and solve everything, especially in his role.
I can only hope that he continues to mature as a professional and that he cuts himself some slack. He has to realize that he has a team around him that will catch him when he falls but it’s also a give and take. Be open to learning from the people around you. Whether he maintains his role in the team or not, it’s an important mindset that will only make him better.

There's a saying that just because you're good at sales, doesn't mean you're good at teaching sales to others.
I think even one glance at Stewie and hearing comms shows that he's a great player and knows it, and has some attitude problems. Time and time again, different esports, sports, and even jobs show that just because someone is good at something, it doesn't mean they should lead a team. Rather, it takes a good leader to bring the best out in everyone.
I think Stewie thought he was up to the challenge, and maybe in a different setting he would be, but it's unfortunate that it didn't go that way. It's the steps he takes next that will really effect his standing or how he's seen by the community

The fact Mr. "I will do anything to win" even admits that he didn't give a fuck at pro league after they were out shows how little fucks he gives about the integrity of the game. That is not profenssionalism. He is a shame to both na cs and cs as a whole, and the scene would be much better without him. Not even to mention the starbucks situiation. the problem at eg is that if you break down each individual player there is no real option for a leader apart from stew, who isint even a leader in the first place, all of them have the ability to be power houses in the server when pointed in the right direction with the right support.
you can see this with the likes of shox now, he was a power house, a player that can turn a game, but the moment he turns to IGL and has to think about 5 + players the whole game that dies, same with Niko when he IGL at faze
EG need a true IGL and to drop someone to house that, otherwise it will be early exits and dropping from qualifiers for this team

i haven't watched him play extensively but objectively, if i were a coach, i wouldn't let him go. I'd give him the time and space he needs but also guide him along the way so when Stew pops off again, it'd still be with EG and this slips under the rugs
