    I love how Valjean's "If I die, let me die - bring him home" harkens back to Fantine's "If there's a God above, he'd let me die instead" [of Cosette], and how they both come true.

    I love when you compare musicals to old operas. Everyone thinks this stuff is super original and it's usually not. That's why I love opera (and musical theater of course). People say it's so outdated....but they are still being used today .

    That last part of "... him home". Reminds me of the a guitar string or harp; each last two words are to sound plucked and allowed to resonate with a ring noise.
    Same with the epilogue "Is to see the face of" and then when they say "God". It's to ring like plucking the high note of a guitar or harp... allow it to resonate.
    At least that's how it sounded like Colm Wilkinson and many other concerts with him in it performed it, and seems to be the best representation.
    It's like you plucked the high note of guitar string... or harp on that very last two notes, or in the epilogue the very last note.

    This is my favourite song from Les Mis and I agree with every little detail you said about the way it should be performed. I have seen lots of live performances and productions of Les Mis and the falsetto at the beginning of this song is such an important detail that gives the song a meaning that I hardly ever hear live. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO.

    i think one really cool thing is that miss saigon (based off of madame butterfly) was written by Claude-Michel Schönberg who also wrote les misérables! i just think it's cool that he incorporated that and also used it for another show

    Man I'm gonna steal that swingset analogy from you

  • @kimmillard9445

    The similarity goes beyond just the melodic between bring him home and the humming chorus. It's also similar dramatically in that Valjean is keeping vigil so that Mariuis can return home to Cosette in the same way Cio-cio San is keeping vigil waiting for the return of Pinkerton. Puccini gets his themes ripped off a lot. ALW settled up with the Puccini family because of the similarities between Music of the Night and the arioso "Quello che tacete" from Girl of the Golden West. If that wasn't enough, the end of "Til I Hear You Sing" from Love Never Dies sounds suspiciously like the end of the aria "Recondita armonia" from Tosca, even being in the same key.

    • @andrewkohler3707
      @andrewkohler3707 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely-it comes across to me as a genuine quotation in "Bring Him Home" because there's such a meaningful connection.

    Randomly came across this video. This is priceless and hilarious. The amount of patience you have for bad performance is the same reaction I want to have when I work with singers or instrumentalists even in the big stages here in LA and they just...let’s be kind and say, miss the mark.

    Thanks for doing this! This is my favorite musical and I didn't realize there was a connection to Madame Butterfly.
    I was privileged to see Ramin Karimloo in this role on his last weekend in the Broadway show. You should check out his version of this song; he has the softness and nuance that Jackman's interpretation lacked in this song.
    Can't wait to see more videos in this series!

    • @brittanychilds1
      @brittanychilds1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@laurelwelch6295 I read that they aren't using the music from the musical but having Menken and Schwartz write different stuff?! I hope that's not the case because I think the musical is pretty perfect.

    • @laurelwelch6295
      @laurelwelch6295 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brittanychilds1 Oh no! That would be tragic. The original score is easily one of the best in a Disney film (mad props to Menken and Schwartz). Hopefully they're just writing some additional songs to pad the run-time (like the 2017 BatB) and not scrapping the original songs. It would be a shame to lose the feel of that rich choral music.

    Compare also the opening of Puccini's Coro bocca chiusa with the opening of Schubert's Piano Sonata in B-flat major, D. 960. The portion of the Puccini quoting Schubert isn't in turn quoted in "Bring Him Home," but I've always found the Schubert piece to be especially verklempt, and therefore a fitting thing to evoke during Butterfly's vigil.

    • @swade5042
      @swade5042 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      SoHardToBeMe i acknowledge that colm wilkinson is THE BEST valjean and he perfectly embodies him, but I think Alfie boe's version sounds slightly bettee

    • @dankhnw8
      @dankhnw8 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Swade I prefer colm's bring him home because colm has this fatherly aura around him that just adds so much for the song but I agree Alfie Boe managed to take the song and really feel like you're seeing someone pray. I think I only got that it's a prayer song after Alfie Boe's version.
