He opened alot of hearts & minds & eyes of people who never had known anyone who looked like him at a time when a giant mirror was being held up & barriers were being lifted. Right man for the time. I have been moved and appreciative of Sydney poitier achievements over the years even as I was 25 years when he first made an impact into my life. My love for him and what he achieved under difficult situations and circumstances and times leaves me speechless. He will forever live in my heart. Will remember him in particular for his role in " Guess who is coming to dinner" and other movie roles as well as his autobiography which I read a while ago and will go back to it again now that he is gone. My only consolation is that at age 94 " what am I asking for from GOD?" He lived a good and productive life to the age of 94- RIP brother and grandpa will love u always. I just watched "Lillies of the Field" for the very first time last evening. As an aficionado of film history, I somehow had never seen it and thought it was a movie that I should watch. After all, Sidney Poitier won the Academy Award for his performance. Well, I can honestly say that I seldom have seen a movie where actors do more with less. It is the very definition of subtlety. So much is communicated with the simple movement of the face. The actress who plays the Mother Superior is impeccable in her performance as well. I am so grateful to Mr. Poitier for his unyielding integrity in each performance.
I watched Lilies of the Field with my Dad when I was around 12 years old. It impacted me then and every time I have watched it since it has impacted me. And like you alluded to it’s because of the acting. Poitier’s other film that strongly affected me was Patch of Blue. Again the acting is superb.
You sum the film up so well. It is an unusual film. It could have been about race and/or religion, but instead was about a man named Homer Smith. Wonderful, simple movie.

I had a friend who's parents lived in Harlem in the early days. Her father was spending time getting to know the jazz scene and later became a well known disc jockey. Her mother got to know Sidney Poitier. He was just a kid that would flirt with her in a friendly manner. I never really knew how much of it was true but after seeing this it seems likely that it really happened. He was there after all. A remarkable guy with great vision and integrity.
As a Bahamian, I’m very proud of all Sidney Poitier accomplished. He inspired me during my youth. He gained my respect for his uncompromising standards. He literally climbed from the bottom to the top of his profession, by discipline and through hard work. He hope he will inspire many marginalized young people to start what they are and pursue Excellence.
I’m of Bahamian descent (Bosfield) and from Miami he had a large family in Overtown my Mom grew up with his cousins. We are very proud of him and his Poitier family.

My mother would make me and my brothers watch his movies when they were on. She held Sidney Poitier up as a shining example of what a proud black man looked like. Growing up in 1960’s Deep South Mississippi as a child wasn’t easy. l recall my mother talking about “In The Heat Of The Night”, especially the scene in which Sidney slaps the bigoted white plantation owner Endicott after getting slapped first. Unthinkable that a black man would do that in Mississippi and live to tell it. I didn’t understand! All that changed as l got older and experienced racial discrimination firsthand, had fist fights with whites because of my blackness and saw the movie as an adult. “Mama, I fully understand now.” I now remember telling her once. And she knew l got it! Sidney Poitier demanded respect and got it! I’m a fan for life. What a great black man!!!!! Rest well, Sidney….😔🕊

I saw Lillies of the Field when it was first shown and I and everybody I knew fell in love with the film and with him. For years it hasn't been on television or available in England but shortly before his death it was shown and it was as wonderful as I had always remembered it. Sidney Poitier dignified and graced every film he was in and he will always be remembered and missed.
I saw "Lilies Of The Fields" in first run in 1963 when I was 9 years old. I fell in love with Sidney Poitier and the movie. I have been captivated by him until his dying day. RIP
It's unfortunate that he was criticized for a lack of "purity" in his choses of characters he chose to play by some in the black community. Entertainment is a market place where you can get any type of character you like. Sidney Poitier chose to play men who were moral, educated and exemplary in their examples and thus setting an example of what is possible for so many in the inner city communities.

A nice kind, old Jewish man, a waiter where Poitier worked as a dish washer, helped teach him learn to read #4:59, helping Poitier every night, at that point in this interview, Poitier tears up thinking back at this old white Jewish man, an old waiter teaching him night after night when the place closes, yes teaching him to read, just because the old man liked this young fellow. Poitier never for git this act of kindness that changed his life. RIP.

I couldn’t stop sobbing laying on my kitchen floor right when I read the news. Was even supposed to pick up my little boy from day care at 4 that day but I just couldn’t and couldn’t even take calls. He stayed at one the workers house for two nights since they couldn’t reach so now everything is fine. THATS how much I love him
I doubt you left your son with a “worker” and they couldn’t contact you for “2 nights”. If you had done so the daycare should have called child protection services, it would have been their duty as you had abandoned your child. I call bs on your story.

I have been a fan of his movies since I was a teenage babysitter staying up late and watching older TCM movies in the 70's To Sir with Love & "Lillies of the Field" "A Patch of Blue" are some of my all time favorite vintage movies along with "Guess who's coming to Dinner" I just seen a good actor who had such Class and elegance especially for a male actor. Sidney was so likable and sweet and kind. A breath of fresh air compared to all the rest who were not.
He is one of my all time favorite actors,good actor, the roles/characters he played were interesting and dignified,enjoyed his movies, will be missed.

One of the Earth's greatest actors, and I say Earth's because no matter what anyone tells you, you were born on the Earth and therefore Earthlings. They call me Mr. Tibbs wonderful movie with a wonderful plot, To Sir with love, another excellent movie with a great message for young people, Guess who's coming to dinner, excellent vision for the future of our Earth and humanity. He was born 3 months premature but lived until age 94 (heard of many made it to 40 weeks who died at age 20 or so). A JEWISH man taught him how to read/changed his life - Kindness. RIP.

I saw Lillies of the Field when it was first shown and I and everybody I knew fell in love with the film and with him. For years it hasn't been on television or available in England but shortly before his death it was shown and it was as wonderful as I had always remembered it. Sidney Poitier dignified and graced every film he was in and he will always be remembered and missed.
Why did I not know about this contract agreement he had with the studio. This was iconic. This man was beyond iconic.
I saw "Lilies Of The Fields" in first run in 1963 when I was 9 years old. I fell in love with Sidney Poitier and the movie. I have been captivated by him until his dying day. RIP

It's unfortunate that he was criticized for a lack of "purity" in his choses of characters he chose to play by some in the black community. Entertainment is a market place where you can get any type of character you like. Sidney Poitier chose to play men who were moral, educated and exemplary in their examples and thus setting an example of what is possible for so many in the inner city communities.

A nice kind, old Jewish man, a waiter where Poitier worked as a dish washer, helped teach him learn to read #4:59, helping Poitier every night, at that point in this interview, Poitier tears up thinking back at this old white Jewish man, an old waiter teaching him night after night when the place closes, yes teaching him to read, just because the old man liked this young fellow. Poitier never for git this act of kindness that changed his life. RIP.
The roles that Sidney Poitier portrayed have a sense of dignity and pride that I have always found appealing. Sidney created an indelible legacy.
Sidney Poitier, you defied all odds and were one of the best, iconic, groundbreaking actors of all time. I grew up watching his movies, with my family and he was one of our favorites. While you are in the afterlife, may you see a patch of blue or walk through the lilies of the field. My final message is goodbye, 'To Sir, with Love'.

I met him briefly in 1979. On, or off, camera, Sidney Poitier was a classy gentleman with an ultra-high integrity level. He will be greatly missed.

This beautiful man was given a chance by another beautiful man.The ability to read and write is key to all things human and divine.I urge everyone to consider tutoring immigrants or anyone who is struggling to read and write as I did in the lower East side of New York City through the public libraries.Its one of the bright spots in my life.Imagine someone faking reading a newspaper on a train heading to work as a janitor just to appear to fit in with everyone else and you are the one who helped them become something great.What a gift.What can be more important than being a good person?

I couldn’t stop sobbing laying on my kitchen floor right when I read the news. Was even supposed to pick up my little boy from day care at 4 that day but I just couldn’t and couldn’t even take calls. He stayed at one the workers house for two nights since they couldn’t reach so now everything is fine. THATS how much I love him

Sir Sidney Poitier will always remain a true Gentleman in our minds and hearts forever. I have been a fan of his movies since I was a teenage babysitter staying up late and watching older TCM movies in the 70's To Sir with Love & "Lillies of the Field" "A Patch of Blue" are some of my all time favorite vintage movies along with "Guess who's coming to Dinner" I just seen a good actor who had such Class and elegance especially for a male actor. How could you not admire this Legend. May he Rest in Peace with our King of Kings where he is loved and cherished always. God Bless his Family and Thank you for sharing him with us all
