Wow what a great video. the one thing I always remember if going to Worksop from home in Staveley was the flour mill on the left on entering the town. Not much else looks any different apart from the now pedestrianised Bridge Street which sorry to say is now a shadow of its former self of busy independent shops in the 80s, no doubt thriving with regular customers. You're now lucky to see a handful of folk walking up and down there as there's very little on there now and folks just don't bother anymore.
Thank you so much for posting this. it was like being in a time machine. Loved the old cars and buses, boy they looked old fashioned, made me feel old too .Hope the gas van driver was ok .An important social history film. well done. From over the border, South Anston. Greetings Worksop. Nice to see the old shops. things were much better then, t=you could keep a girlfriend for more than 2 minutes, and the pubs were full. wonderful.
Was just getting over how Mansfield Road looked pre-by-pass, and a second later I think the truck's going to come straight through the screen and hit me. Seriously though, it's great to see it given how much I've heard about the town the last 30 years
At the point when the gas van crashed at 12:58 it looked liked at first it had taken the Escort estate with him, but after it paused the Escort carried on as if nothing had happened, even though he had a very lucky escape. Footage like that back then was rare but one hoped it paved the way for more people to fit or take cameras in vehicles for evidence purposes like this today.
@@joshbacon8241 Directly in front of the Escort driver (who swerved) & the gas van missing him by a whisker. He easily had the best view of it but despite what happened (& his close call) he just continued driving on rather than stopping to see if the gas van driver was OK. It's all there for you as the footage shows.
The old Kilton hospital, lido outdoor swim pool. Tuby s fair, Renault feugro , tigers football ground , Tandys, hursts vans outside town hall , Datsuns, cortinas, escorts, brill memories
As a kid getting taken to the cattle market to see the cows and pigs was the high point of a shopping trip, and if a pig or cow escaped and had to be chased by the men in brown coats that made for a super-exciting visit : ).
Looks way better in this than after they pedestrianised it. Now it just looks like every other cloned brick paved town in the UK. Still had character back then.
UK towns are now absolutely effing dreadful much like the entire country in fact. Overpriced, overcrowded and full of petty irrelevant little losers pushing agendas i don't want to hear about
Fascinating video! From the cars and buses (many which are now extinct or commanding high prices for the ones that have survived), the now-defunct high street chains (Tandy?! Forgot about that and I remember it from my 1990s childhood!) to the prang captured at 12:58. What car were you in? Also, the lady whom you honked at.....wonder where she is now and what her story is?
I spotted the corner I got knocked off my motorbike on ... I was OK but came to surrounded by a crowd with a little boys voice asking "Mummy is he dead?". My young god-daughter for some reason finds this story hilarious.
@@sxzuia33 I saved up my money from working on the farms at Balborough to buy my 1st HI-FI system at Tandy in Worksop in December 1980: I still have it!
You just get a glimpse of the Tandy shop on the right, at the junction (2:13) A lovely white Art Deco building with large windows of curved panes of glass. Is the building still there? I used to work at the Tandy store 1980 - 81 when l lived in Doncaster. I seem to recall the competition came from a Hi - Fi shop called Baskill’s (?)
loved watching this, lit was the year I left workshop. I am the Grandaughter of The Famous Mr and Mrs Brumby from the Best chippy in town on cheapside, in fact I was born in that house . I came for my Grandmother's funeral in 2004 and I was heartbroken to see my grandparents lovely fish and chip shop derelict and abandoned. is anyone knows Who owns the property please send me a message thank you
I remember Mrs Brumby's chip shop being on Garside Street, just off Priorswell road. Across the road was a corner shop run by Mr & Mrs Cairns, they had a daughter called Diane. I lived just a short distance from Garside Street, just over the Canal Bridge and turn right after the old Brewery entrance and down Canal Terrace, number 7. I lived there from 1967 until the age of 14 in 1979, and was a regular customer at Brumby's chippy throughout the 1970's. They used to wrap the chips in newspaper then, and if you took Mrs Brumby a pile of old newspapers she would give you a free bag of chips. I remember there was a long, narrow and low white painted wooden bench in the chip shop that we used to sit on when we were kids. The bench was still there in the 1990's when the shop was run by a Chinese chap.
Caroline where was the chip shop located, I mentioned it to my parents who were born and raised in Worksop and dad thinks it was Newgate st or was it on the bend of Retford rd? Thanks
Hi, May I use some or parts of these videos? I'm from worksop but now live in Sweden, I will be making some videos about my stomping grounds and would love to riff some of these. I will of course link back to you and fully reference anything I use.
Look at those cars what a memory in uk none of then are on roads now. Only new ones which are ugly they don't have any style and full of garbage tech. Not usefull at all. These were strong some and reliable cars they did break down more but they were easy to fix at home then now days taking to a dealer just to get ripped off and you can't even do anything with them at home.
Fourty odd years later! Extra junctions shed loads more houses, but town is rubbish! Online shopping and rubbish council killing town off! Catch22 situation. Nobody wants to come into town because no decent shops, but big business wont invest because of lack of footfall! We don't need a bowling alley we ned shops!
I noticed the cameraman (who worked in the motor accessories trade) taking special note of what would have been, in 1980s Worksop, a pretty expensive and 'posh' car.
Brilliant video 👏 took me back to my early teens.. Thank you Rod ❤
That van driver just went straight into the wall! I bet he was looking at his phone...
Wow I moved to Worksop with my family when I was 9....in 1981. Thank you for posting such a trip down memory lane.

I'm not from Worksop but I loved all the old cars and the steady driving. God no stressy rushed driving. Brilliant.
Bad driving is down to current mentality
What an absolutely amazing video. You can really feel like you're back there. Astonishing that you caught a prang on camera too. Thank you.
did you think in 1981 that people would be watching this in 2020.... blows my mind.

I passed my driving test in July 1981 in Worksop! Even better ELO's Time album knocked the royal wedding album of the top of the charts!
I've always said worksop looks as if it hasn't been touched since the 70's. Now I know its true!
Another cracking ride down memory lane. Can't believe its 33 years ago though. That is how I remember WSop. Thanks Rod
God if you could go back and get some of those cars. Worth a fortune now
Just got a Toyota Corona Mk2 identical to the one I spotted at 11:47.
I lived on Shepherds Avenue from mid 1960's to mid 1980's and this brought back a lot of memories. Thanks for posting this video.
This was the year I was born. Crazy to see it. Thanks.
good footage thanks for that, the road going past the collage on carlton road was in a lot better nick back then than it is now !!!!!!!!!!
those lovely old cars.
1980,s worksop ,clearly a better place than in 2014 :)
And 2024
Brilliant. Really enjoyed that. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for posting that. it took me back. I was run over on the right just after the train crossing around 1968. and lived in Sunnyside. great to see
Such memories 😂

First dash cam crash video then!
Brilliant video.
Jeez,i remember having to drive thru' Worksop in the late seventies on our way from Selston to Scarborough (mum hated the motorway)
i spotted a copper and a police care , rare these days
Them cars will be worth money now .
I love how you mounted the camera on a chivers jelly :-(
Nice to see the cattle market

great video, what awful cars we used to drive, droning horrible drive trains haha

The creaky cars of the 80s can hear the engine and everything
I passed my driving test in Worksop in 1981 - I must have driven on some of the streets in this film.
I spotted the corner I got knocked off my motorbike on ... I was OK but came to surrounded by a crowd with a little boys voice asking "Mummy is he dead?". My young god-daughter for some reason finds this story hilarious.
Nice. Does anyone remember where the Tandy shop was?
Yes what a place

Noticed how much sign polution we have now? Places looked tidier further back you go.. less people, less crxp
This is funny I was in Walnut Creek California 1981 now I'm somewhere in the UK 1981

amazing 10/10
Mostly the cars and roads have changed over the years. Most of the houses are the same with some buildings that have come and gone.
So many coaches.
Worksop’s changes quite a bit comparing this video to now :)
They knocked down the Co-op (where Santa used to hang out) to build a McDonalds ... that is just wrong.
Caroline where was the chip shop located, I mentioned it to my parents who were born and raised in Worksop and dad thinks it was Newgate st or was it on the bend of Retford rd? Thanks

so much diffrence.
It really hasn't changed i live here now and the only thing that's changed is that there isn't a road going through town anymore.
and the crossroads by the college

Not many people around ,,,

The Transit that crashed did get repaired.
@yossarian why are cars now ugly with square back instead of a 'boot' and all the same colour?
Hubnut on YT sounds like the place for you!
1.52 a gallon
Still looks the same now lol
Fuckin he'll it's changed!
WHERES TURNER ROAD

Exactly the same in Bedford and its a deliberate policy. UK is now a filthy shit hole.
