  • We went for a 20km hike with just a prime lens. I used the Canon 35mm f/1.8 RF lens.
    My Camera Gear: bit.ly/BvSGear
    My Instagram: bit.ly/BvSInsta
For landscape photography, we usually like to have our full assortment of lenses. However, for this big hike up to Cerro Torre here in Patagonia I brought just a prime lens. I took the Canon 35mm f/1.8 RF lens. I also used the Canon RP body.
In the end, I think it was a smart move. The hike was easy with the light load, and the photos came out really well. I also think that using only the prime lens made me a bit more creative. I'm really loving the Canon 35mm f/1.8 lens. It's light, and the image quality is great. It's not your typical landscape photography lens, but it is fantastic.

The point about the hip straps should be well-taken. Well adjusted straps can make a huge difference. When I go light, I use a sling bag, a camera, 2 extra lenses, a travel tripod, and a water bottle. Great images! Rock on!

I brought only a 35mm prime when I visited Helsinki, Tallinn, and Riga for the first time, and honestly, zero regrets. It was so freeing and challenging to capture everything that way.
Now that I've watched the video the whole way through, I can only begin to imagine the strain all that gear has put on your body! Hope you feel better, and don't sacrifice your health for the sake of... well, anything.

Firstly I wanted to say thank you for raising the issue of heavy camera bag related injury! I tore out my shoulder trying to heave around my 14kg bag around Japan and not wearing the straps properly. This really encouraged me to do the right thing by my own body with my photography! Secondly I really enjoyed your images from this video so I'm not really sure how much you compromised. At last two that look like keepers to my eyes. Thanks for the great content. Please keep it coming :)

I'm obviously not hiking as much as you with the 15ish kg I usually hike, but when I hike, I make sure to make the hip straps take the majority of the weight, and just leave the shoulder straps to stop the bag from falling backwards. Maybe you should look into changing how you distribute that weight?

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  5 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm really good at using the waist strap. But, the doc said it was because I don't use the chest strap which pulls the shoulder straps together.

    • @janmartinmathiassen6265
      @janmartinmathiassen6265 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@BrendanvanSon Hm, I don't use those either, not sure if it would be better to use those, or just loosen them up even further. I tend to have it so the backpack never really is pulled in to my back. This is mostly because I sweat a lot when I'm out hiking so I try to get as much cooling as possible.
Obviously those straps are there for a reason, I probably just don't hike enough for them to actually matter in the long run. Oh well, hope you find something which works sustainably.

Went through the chest pains for several months. Thought it was related to a neck and shoulder injury in 2015. Heavy camera bag killed me. I even mentioned it to doctors that never really thought anything about it. Wasn’t short of breath and didn’t have any of the standard symptoms. Turned out to be a heart attack in February. Don’t take anything for granted, see a doctor and be persistent.

There's a huge issue with camera bags, they are absolutely not designed for smart loading. Even the truly excellent f-stop (brand) bags. Typically you want the weight near the top and close to your back, rather than the bottom of the bag. Something to consider when you are buying bags - which in turn may help your sternum issue.
Furthermore, a *good* bag will have a well designed waist strap with two different sets of toggles, adjusted at different times of setting your bag for the day. Theoretically, you should be able displace a lot of the weight into your hips.
For the sake of argument, if you don't already know how to adjust your bag properly, it may well be worth getting trained. It *might* help releave some of the weight off your shoulders, and help you carry loads without damage to your body.
    Hope this is useful.

I would like to add that from my experience tripods on the back of your backpack make it only worse. Not because of weight but because how it pulls all backpack to the back. I try to have my tripod in hands when possible, also sometimes I put it on my chest (solution far from perfect but sometimes helps).

Brendan a bag you need to look at is the Shimoda design explore 40 it will help you so much. I manage a camera store in Jackson Wyoming and we cater to adventure photographers more than most places do. It is the right bag. Also I would suggest taking a look at the Fujifilm ecosystem. I don’t want to sound like that guy but if your health is becoming a factor it might be time to reevaluate and the Fuji system is a lot lighter (if you shoot primes) without giving much if any in image quality.

Use your hip belt well to offload your shoulders! You might need to select another bag with sufficient back length. My Mindshift Backlight 26 fits my over 8ft length well. My shoulders hardly feel anything, but I need to discipline myself during traveling to take the effort to buckle up the hip belt.

Hey Brendan! I think 35mm is great pick. If I should have only one mono focal lens it would be 35mm. Great for landscape, astro photography. Long enough for street photography and even for portraits. If you crop image (which is doable with 32mpix) you can even get 50mm with about 10mpix resolution which is decent even for large prints. We live in great time. :-)

  • @hank7055

20 kg should be no problem whatsoever - if you have a properly fitted pack with a fitted hip belt. The shoulder straps should bear only few kg, mostly just to balance the load on your hips. Also, unloads your lower back. You should seriously consider checking into this. I'm not a great photographer but have done most of the major mountain hikes in the world, and have never had or known of any of my fellow trailers to have an experience such as you describe, as long as their packs were properly fitted...

The brownish colour on the glacial water can be an issue - That's why I love places like Jökulsárlón in Iceland where you get sea into the lake and more of a blue-greenish colour to it. Any tips on dampening the brownish colours in Lightroom or Photoshop?
Personally - I like the R over RP in terms of picture quality. The RF-35 is a decent lens in many ways for hiking but I'm waiting for the 15-35 even tho it's much heavier.

Brendan, was that you disturbing the perfect reflection early on in the video with your tripod leg? Beautiful images - they were stunning, I also appreciated the macro shots of frost. On bags, I’m using my high quality backpacks and camera inserts plus restraining myself on gear. It’s inconvenient to not be able to open like you can with the fstopper and other photog bags, but I think the design compromises the suspension system. Wonderful video!

2 questions Brendan: 1: Is Alpenglow becoming the most over-used word in the YT photography community? 2: Why isn't it Andeanglow in this case?

    Brendan,
What is your personal opinion on the RP ? I am looking to upgrade soon from. My old T2i and grabbing this camera with the RF 35mm. I have heard a lot of mixed opinions, but really feel its a great camera to get into the FF body. I love the phots you grabbed in this video and they looked awesome.
    Thanks for the videos !!!

Try Atlas, small but very comfortable, with storage space for clothes, hydration, sandwtches etc.

I always have a hard time leaving lenses behind, so much FOMO 😂😂. But having less choice makes you think of composition better sometimes I think. The sternum issue sucks, stay safe! Look into the Mindshift Backlight 36L.

New subscriber and loving your channel. Also, new (ish) to landscape photography. Can you please tell me the reason why and which one for filters on your lens! Thanks!

What filter system are you using? Awesome star shots. 35mm is underrated

This video just read my mind. I'm about to travel for a month have been contemplating whether to take a 35mm prime (and a couple of other primes) instead of a big heavy 24-70mm lens. Do you have any tips for good but lightweight tripods? I'm quite new to landscape photography.

Hey Brendan. Maybe you should tryout the Shimoda bag. It is another level of comfort. I can imagine it would be good for your health.

That's the next bag on my list to try. One of the participants had one and it looked amazing!

Sometimes all I "need" is my Mobile Phone, I just "like" having my DSLR with me. 😆
But then again my assignments are a little easier to shoot I'm not hiking 20 km up a mountain .

I don't get it. Seems like 95% of camera bags don't have a top pouch that's isolated. It's so much more convenient. Would love to see a low profile bag, with back entry to get rid of those side wing zippers that cause so much trouble and just beg for getting pickpocketed in crowds, and a top pouch that's isolated with a good tripod strap that's central with the foot pouch like you have there. So many bags that have elements, but haven't found any good ones that have it all and are still affordable. The one exception being a super cheap Neweer bag (that's a smudge too small) and which still doesn't have the back entry.
