  • It should be simple. Buy compost, use compost, but it is not.
The composition is poor, it must be a third, fibres.
    This will dry quickly.
It smells like Creosote/ farmer's fertiliser.
My garden smells like I have been painting fences.
My eyes started to burn and as I write this, they still feel tight.
The best budget compost I have seen this year is Richmoor.
I have saved some of this compost, if Levington's wants to come and get it, to test it, they are very welcome.
I would never grow fruit or veg in this compost.

Wood fibres seem fluffy but in a pot they compress and break down and also plants don’t grow well in wood based composts. Peat-free con-post

Just means it went anaerobic, doubtful the smell is from chemicals. Break it up some, spead it out/turn it for a couple days then mist it and itll improve. I used coco based peat free soil this year and was same. At first i also came to the same conclusion. (While i dont like compost thats not fully broken down for pots, for my beds i prefer it as my soil life seems to quickly dispose of organic matter. Best of luck
