By far one of the better video for visual presentation of Buddhist details. The vast majority of content are lectures speaking at you with zero visual representation. This was next level compared to others.

It was amazing! All the important things summarised in 5 mins.
A summarised mind map at the end or in description link, would be the key to perfection.

Theravada here. Everything else is WAY too complex for me. The Buddhas original words are simple, clear, direct, and practical.

Theravada itself is pretty confusing because of Abhidama

    • @wordscapes5690

@@nicholasbellum1507 But the Abhidamma contains the very kernel of what the Buddha taught. Without the Abhidamma, Buddhism is not possible. The Abhidamma is part of ALL Buddhist traditions. If you are not fond of deep speculation on issues of meditation, it is always possible to receive the simplified guidance of a bhikhu or bhikkhuni who will be able to simplify it for you. It is not necessary to study Abhidamma as a layperson or householder.

@@wordscapes5690 I am saying this from a scholar point of view. It is true that Theravadas views the three pitikas (The Pali Canon) as the ultimate truth that Buddha said without any modification, it is not clearly true. In the early schools of Buddhism (The time period is before the Theravada sect is established) , some had Abhidharma and some didn't. And each school has different Abhidharma teachings. It is confusing to learn the different variations of Abhidharma if one wants to try find the absolute truth.
Also, it should be noted that there was no Abhidharma in the First Buddhist Council.

    Thank you so much.
As a novice it's the best explanation I've seen.
I Knew there was different schools, and that I dissagree with some concepts but this explained exactly where my beleifs fit in.
And its helped me to choose which I should pursue.

I can tell more about the three Buddhist schools in Sri Lanka.
So, it started with Ashoka of India and Thissa (aka Devanampiyathissa) of Sri Lanka (250 - 210 BC). They were pals and Ashoka sent his then son, Rev Mahinda to Sri Lanka so that Thissa can convert into Buddhism. King Thissa gave away his royal gardens for the Mahinda thero and his followers. The king built the Maha-Viharaya or the Great Temple in the premises and this is where the first school started.
Fast forward 100 years or so, and we have King Walagamba (103/89 - 77 BC). Now this bugger was one of the most disorganised kings ever to exist. He had to face tons of invasions, wars, and dethrones that retreating from palaces to caves and back to palaces to caves was all the norm. Long story short, he built and gifted a temple in the same premises of the Great Temple called Abhayagiri-Viharaya to a monk who had helped him during his tough times. Now, gifting a temple for one single monk was a big no-no, according to Buddhist ethics. It's either a donation for the entire monkhood, counting all the monks in the world or else, the deals off. Anyway, the temple introduced Mahayana Buddhism. This is the second school.
Now fast forward another century and a half, King Mahasen was the big dude in Sri Lanka (276 - 303 AD). Dude had a really twisted monk advisor who lied that the monks of the Great Temple were anti-Buddhists and they should not exist. The fool of a king started harassing the monks which led to the monks abandoning the Great Temple. King Mahasen razed the temple to the ground and used the rubble to renovate the Abayagiri Temple. Now, certain circumstances led to him realising his mistake so he re-built the Great Temple, and even built a temple called Jetavanaramaya. This is the third school.
Thanks for reading and congrats on reading this far.

Ah~ yet another Buddhism-related video that excludes Vietnam as a Buddhist nation despite 55% of the population being Buddhist. I find it really odd why, time and time again, Vietnam gets excluded from the list.
Vietnamese Buddhism is a bit unique in that culturally, it is within the sinosphere but geographically lies within SEA. As such, both Theraveda and Mahayana are prevalent in the country/culture. With that being said, some could argue that Theraveda is only really prevalent in the South of Vietnam whereas I think the north is either extremely small or non-existent. I would definitely say that Vietnam, though possess both schools of Buddhist thought, favour mahayana Buddhism more as there are definitely more mahayana temples scattered across the length of the whole country and even vietnamese communities abroad.
