Very unfortunate to see what's happening to this channel. As many have pointed out, this is far from the former quality content. Was wondering what the content has to do with the video title at about half the whole play time, and the conclusion just falls really short, when there could be a clear cut answer to it: The only people framing this a new cold war is politicians and strategists who seek personal gains, while the community of geopolitical researchers is in pretty clear consensus that this framing makes no sense. I guess the channel tried to keep neutral with this approach but it doesn't really feel genuine with the clearly negative framing of China throughout the video.
Although the content creator is trying hard to save the recent decline in viewership, we should also remain fair and objective when considering the changes in China-Russia and China-West relations. Before 2018, the interactions between Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin were not frequent, at most within the normal range. The real change actually came from the sudden shift in U.S. policy toward China after 2018. In fact, Xi's reputation from when he came to power in 2012 until 2017 was not so bad. His political and economic policies primarily continued the openness of his predecessors. Correspondingly, from 2008 to 2017, China's international image steadily improved, as can be seen in the Pew survey results on China's global image, reaching its peak in 2018. After 2018, the shift in U.S. and Western policies pushed China and Russia firmly together. From the ban on Huawei to the trade war, relations rapidly deteriorated, with Western media actively supporting this policy shift, and COVID further pushed China-West relations to a freezing point. Even several charts in this video corroborate this shift, all indicating that significant changes in China-Russia and China-West relations occurred in 2018. The underlying cause of this shift is evidently the West, led by the U.S., initiating actions to maintain its dominant position, which is understandable. However, the way this video narrates the situation, as if Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin proactively formed a close personal relationship that led the West to change its attitude, I believe is incorrect. I would say that for China, external factors are the primary driving force, while the personal characteristics of the Chinese and Russian leaders are secondary factors.
China stealing trade secrets and being dishonest regarding commerce was arguably more the reason for the change in relations from the west. Political infiltration, self interest etc
Yeah what people fail to notice is that it isn't China that changed, it's the US. You can literally track the increase in hostility (for instance via trade wars and violations of Taiwans' airspace) to 2017. Nothing changed in China then, Xi came to power in 2012. What changed was America - specifically a certain orange man came to power on the back of an anti-China crusade, which his successor has just continued cos the populace loved it. It's actually ironic considering how much that man is disliked by half the US electorate that 'their side' largely continued his legacy, albeit a bit more multilaterally.

I think it’d be more accurate to compare the geopolitical situation now with the geopolitical situation that existed between powers for centuries before 1939 rather than the Cold War.
if you have to ask if you're in a cold war then it's pretty obvious you're not in a cold war. the current situation between china and the usa is nothing like the cold war between the soviets and the usa. the cold war in the later half of the 1900s was an ideological battle between capitalism and communism across the globe, both powers were imperialist and spreading their ideas with military might, and both were armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons and were constantly very nearly on the verge of starting a nuclear war. the current situation with china is more just an economic battle, there's no "battle for the soul of the world", it's just china wants more money and influence and america wants more money and influence so there's tension.
Iraq was the inflection point of all this. Which is the same than saying America's limitless ambitions. The world also stood by when America decided to cross half the world and invade its borders over nothing.

However, the British return HK back to China in 1997, and since 1997,7.1, Chinese military always existed in HK.
'Country' doesn't necessarily mean fully sovereign. For example, the United Kingdom is made up of 4 different countries; Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. Each of these countries often gets their own representation in international events, but nobody thinks of Wales as being independent from the UK. Technically speaking, the USA is made up of 50 different countries, though nowadays most people think of US states as provinces with fancy names and a little more autonomy than usual.
8:42 are you sure a 2017 RAND estimate is accurate though? We’ve seen how poorly Russia has done at their war since 2022. I thnk these numbers may have been high on the side of Russia, if not also China
They're too high all over the place, not just Russia and China but also USA and France. Ever since WW2 there weren't any wars where both participants had same types of tools available, it was usually about USA having a superiority all over the place against some rebels or w/e with AK-47 and some bombs. Pretty much a one sided slaughter, especially if more than one NATO country did participate. And Ukraine in this conflict literally has all the tools delivered as a loan and has its economy on life support by third powers, in a sense, it is like a zombie that won't lose until you either cut off its head or cut off its blood supply. And I'd argue if Russia were to use the kind of fighting USA used in Vietnam, Ukraine would've already lost or would've been permanently wounded (Chemical weapons that were used in Vietnam are still causing mutations). Hence, there's a thick red line that Russia cannot target crop fields on territory of the "Breadbasket" country.
@@Rubinrus One of the biggest contributor in military ranking calculation are nukes, Russia has almost 6000 of them which automatically puts them above 95% of all other nations, same with the US.
@@yuning8045 Nukes are relevant, but unlikely to be used in Cold-War-Style conflicts. I think a big part actually comes down to how resilient and powerful a country's critical infrastructure and military industrial complex are: Russia's is decently resilient, AFAIK the only import they can't make themselves are semiconductors, and those they get from China. But the Russian war economy is not nearly powerful enough to make up for the insane losses in Ukraine and is increasingly held back by their own crumbling infrastructure. China's production capacity looks to be absolutely massive and resilience should be decent too; they can even make some halfway-decent semiconductors (only like 5-15 years behind Taiwan & South Korea, depending on the tech). The US and EU are at a similar point as China in terms of semiconductors, but they are overly dependent on China for most non-military supply chains. Unless the west is attacked first, there will likely not be enough public support for military engagements in the face of a looming economic crisis in case of Chinese sanctions. Similarly, the Chinese economy would suffer harshly if they stopped the exports, but a dictatorship is more likely to be able to suppress dissent in such a case.

This was indeed a cold war 2.0, just China play the role of US in the past, US play USSR.
"chinas neighbours like Hong Kong" that's like saying Wales needs protection from England.
Wales isn’t drastically culturally different nor does it have a completely opposite political system.
@@sanguinor5609 hong kong is as culturally different as northern Ireland is from the rest of Britain.
@@samsniper2000 Yeah the CCP are just as bad as the protestants.
I guess the difference is that HKers are less fond of Beijing than the Welsh are of London.

Iraq was the inflection point of all this. Which is the same than saying America's limitless ambitions. The world also stood by when America decided to cross half the world and invade its borders over nothing.
At that time, USA was the only world super power.
I don't know man, china might not think they are in a cold war with you though.
If you understand Mandarin and watch their news over the past two decades, you'd think we're already in one. The Party needs a powerful foreign enemy to justify its continued domestic rule.

I have to close this video because of the fact and logical mistakes in the video. At 14:22, your video states countries like Taiwan Hong Kong and Vietnam, it's ok to say Taiwan is a country because they have an independent government and military, i have no interest in starting my debate on this point. However, the British return HK back to China in 1997, and since 1997,7.1, Chinese military always existed in HK.
Isn't HK supposed to maintain its independence for a couple more years before being swallowed into China?
And Taiwan is China's territory and province, better known to the world and UN
'Country' doesn't necessarily mean fully sovereign. For example, the United Kingdom is made up of 4 different countries; Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. Each of these countries often gets their own representation in international events, but nobody thinks of Wales as being independent from the UK. Technically speaking, the USA is made up of 50 different countries, though nowadays most people think of US states as provinces with fancy names and a little more autonomy than usual.
@@adamperdue3178Hong Kong is not even technically an independent country. “one country, two systems”

8:42 are you sure a 2017 RAND estimate is accurate though? We’ve seen how poorly Russia has done at their war since 2022. I thnk these numbers may have been high on the side of Russia, if not also China
This is a great point.
@@Rubinrus This will probably flip when the US inevitably gets dragged into a conflict with Iran by you know who. Then guess who'll be backing them.
I think a big part actually comes down to how resilient and powerful a country's critical infrastructure and military industrial complex are:
Russia's is decently resilient, AFAIK the only import they can't make themselves are semiconductors, and those they get from China.
Now's the time to invest in cold weather gear. 🥶
