Saw the Beastie Boys live twice in the early 90’s. Hands down the most hype crowd and high energy performances. At Lalapalooza they played before The Smashing Pumpkins and the crowd basically was done after the Beastie Boys and Billy Corgan got so pissed that he stopped playing and said “Should I just have the Beastie Boys come back on and play!?” And the crowd cheered! Billy was pissed LOL

I was at their last performance ever at Bonnaroo 2009. Of course, it was not planned to be their last performance, but they announced MCA's cancer after that show, and not very long after, he passed. The show was amazing. I mean, AMAZING! Half the show they rapped on the mic with mixmaster mike scratching, the other half they played their own instruments and killed it. They even did about a 10 minute jam session where they just freestyled on their instruments to a groove. Oh yea, they also brought out Nas, who was not on the bill that year, which surprised everyone. One of the most memorable shows I've ever seen.

Beastie were hot back in the day but they were going through the same things Em is going through now “the politics of hip hop”. You could not find their albums under the rap section at the record store. They had them under rock. I remember asking the clerk “where is license to ill”. And they said “under rock”. I was thinking “that makes no sense”. Another thing that hurt the bboys hip hop image back in the day was MCA’s decision to become Buddhist. He was taught his words will influence people so he stopped the gun, drug, and girl bashing talk. Later on he drops a bar that says he has albums that will ruin your health! 😂 The fans still stuck in there through the change but we never got another gangsta album like license to ill and Paul’s boutique and that was during the gangster rap era so it’s sad because we missed out on potentially some classic thug music but it is what it is. I stuck with them until MCA died and I liked the last album but they are differently their own thing. And anyone that says the beastie boys are not rappers should be back handed on the spot

A lot of beer, a lot of women, and a lot of cursing. 2 2 automatic on my person. My hand is in my pocket and my finger is on the trigger. My posse is getting big and posse is getting bigger! ....gangsta

    • @Samhalta
      @Samhalta 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I mean as a woman the girl bashing does get old and I've seen it influence younger people who don't distance themselves from what they hear (not all of them, thankfully). That being said, I feel like songs like "girls" are more satirical, so there is some self-reflexion there. After a while they probably had nothing to prove anymore and were just having fun.

These three guys started as pre teen punk bands that joined together and at the time when rap was starting, they loved it, embraced it and abandoned their punk image for a few years to concentrate on rap from 1981 on. From Brooklyn and Manhattan, across the bridge from each other, they soaked in the local sounds and made their own. They released a prank call they made to Carvel Ice cream over some beats called Cookie Puss in 1985, and after some NYC airplay, and picked up by Rick Rubin in his apartment, they helped start Def Jam Records, helped give LL Cool J his start, and inspired many rap artists for at least the next decade. Millennials, I feel sorry for you, it was so great being 15 in 1985 and hearing cookie puss on cassette, and wearing it out. When Paul Revere became memorized by everyone a few years later we were hooked.

Saw them live in 98, north of Toronto... It was a full day, outdoor festival, and ATCQ was supposed to open, but disbanded like, a week before, so Rascalz (with Northern Touch All-Stars), Biz Markie, Mix Master Mike, and Money Mark opened on the mainstage... There was a low-rider car show, martial arts and Free Tibet demonstrations, a second/daytime stage (with BTK, Canadian group, among acts)... Helluva show... During 'Body Moving', they got the crowd (of about 20k people) to split down rows for a dance competition... 😆...
It was an epic show and day...

I saw the Beastie Boys twice in 24 hours at the Bestival Festival, Isle of Wight, England, 2007. They headlined the Saturday Night and played all the tunes you could wish for. An amazing experience, but I was right at the back of the crowd, it was so busy! On the Sunday, The Beastie Boys promised a mellow, mainly instrumental Jazz set, based on their ‘The In Sound From Way Out!’ album. I went to the stage, got right to the front, then when the band came on, they decided to ditch the mellow jazz thing and go right into the same setlist from the previous night. It was so intense and amazing. The sense of fun that came across was so strong. MIke D kept talking about the Isle of Wight, but calling it the ‘Isle of Might’ and the ‘Isle of Mike’. Their keyboard player, Money Mark particularly shined in this performance. I also saw the Beastie Boys headlining the Reading Festival, England, 1998. That was during the Intergalactic era and the B-Boys were in Kung Fu gear busting some moves!

I'm an old head. We battled "Paul revere" back and forth at recess, along with run dmc's "peter piper" in '85. I saw the beastie boys, finally, in '93 or '94. Cypress Hill joined them onstage for "So Whatcha Want". The sound quality was sick and everyone rushed the stage the whole set. It was AMAZING. Saw Wu-Tang in '97. Would've been a great show if they didn't sound like they were farting through cans and strings. RUN DMC and LL were always tight, but the Beasties were surely from another planet. RIP MCA.

I saw them in June '92 at l'Ancienne Belgique, Brussels, Belgium, Europe. It was electrifying, energetic, connecting, almost transcendent.
I had discovered them in '87 when their album 'Licensed to ill' arrived in Europe. I remember the day, where I was, with whom and the decidedly different listening experience but so bad ass that I was hooked immediately.
Unfortunately, at that time, as was the case with Eminen as well, the Hip Hop community - including the one in Europe, yes, there was one - literally velipended white people doing Hip Hop... I however recently noted some wider recognition of their talents.
Since I'm also an audiophile, Brass Monkey is the title I ask to stream as test when I've had to choose speakers since then.
I was passionate about Hip Hop since 1984, I bought my first turntables and my first mixer in '86 just to scratch. I've always had 2 turntables and a mixer in my home office forever.

The verse "Got an A from Moe Dee for sticking to themes" is a reference to the score Kool Moe Dee gave the Beastie Boys on his infamous rappers report card.

I saw Beasties here in the UK at Wembley in London, 2004. I've seen a lot of bands and groups play, and this was easily top 3. Just wild. They had Mix Master Mike on decks, they played instruments for big portions of the show and they played 25 songs with skits and stuff between! Incredible show.

I had tickets to see them waaaay back in the day (1999-2000?)with Rage Against the Machine... it was going to be the pinnacle of my concert going experiences ... then someone in the band got hurt & the show was either cancelled or rescheduled .... either way I did not get to see either band. There is almost no other concert I wanted to see more than that You simply cannot go wrong with The Beasties This middle aged white Canadian woman has been listening to them since the 1980's & they never disappoint Love your reactions - keep it up! love from Canada

I'll forever be jealous of people hearing this track for the first time. I did listen to it so much when I was yonger, also it was a big thing during late 90's or early 00's for MTV to play this Music Video. Was almost an event for me and my friends. Glad to hear that you like what you're hearing, keep up with these good reactions!

One thing you may have noticed, their verses go in a pattern. First section: Rhyming on "ile", Second section: Rhyming on "eem", Third section: Rhyming on "op"

I remember when the "Fight for Your Right" music video hit MTV - funny song & silly video, but it sparked my interest... Hmmm, who are these guys? So I went out the next day & bought their first album - Licensed to ill. That was in 1986, I was 19 yrs old. Now 53 and still listen to it's classic groundbreaking songs - No Sleep Till Brooklyn, Brass Monkey, Paul Revere, Hold it now-Hit it, She's crafty (that's a funky one), and my favorite - Girls!
When Run DMC teamed up with Aerosmith on Walk this way, that introduced us to the novel idea of music fusion, putting two genres together. So you can say that they opened the door for that idea. Then shortly later, the Beastie Boys show up to kick that door off of its hinges. That first album is loaded with heavy beat drops perfectly paired to sick rock guitar riffs. I think you will enjoy listening to their early stuff & how their style evolves over time, but still retains that distinctive Beastie Boys sound that we all know as soon as it starts playing. :-)

During this era, I believe the Beastie Boys were co-producing their beats with Mario C (with turntablism by Mix Master Mike). This album, Hello Nasty, had some of the most interesting hip hop production of the 1990s.

@SwaggyReacts There is a Concert at Madison Square Garden that was filmed by Fans and Beastie Boys in the crowd. They literally went from the stage, road an elevator while Mix Master Mike was scratching, and appeared in the stands, nose bleed section :-D
