@Tim Keith rap music it self was about your experience. It could be about parties, girls school or violence. It was the alternative.. gangster rap wasn’t only about your experience it was also things you heard and read about. It’s a entertaining art form so technically it’s gangster rap by definition...you think Ice T, Easy E, Ice Cube..etc was actually robbing banks and committing murders?! I can see why you probably subconsciously down play their gangster. The term gangster was coined because of NWA.. if you haven’t check out their book you should It’s a good read.

Great reaction man, as a Beastie Boys diehard fan, every song on Licensed to Ill is timeless, but id skip the shortest track "Girls", every other song is incredible. Id highly recommend Rhymin' & Stealin, The New Style, She's Crafty, Brass Monkey, Posse in Effect, Hold It Now Hit It, Time To Get Ill. Definitely react to Professor Booty from Beasties 3rd album Check Your Head. But their 2nd album Pauls Boutique is an experience and meant to be listened to front to back, its a sampling masterpiece! Some great tracks to react to though would be Shake Your Rump, Hey Ladies, Shadrach, High Plains Drifter, Car Thief...jeez, the whole album is perfect.

fight for your right to party was the big hit, that made them famous, but this song was the one that everyone who had the album, would memorize and use as a secret language. All you would have to do is say "Now......Here's.." and everyone would just join in. I am talking about WHITE AMERICA. RunDMC cracked the door open and made it to a few of us. The Beasties were there a year later to take it all the way to the farm lands. Beer drinking, girl chasing and distorted guitars drew the rock crowd in. Some of us followed to Paul's Boutique, a classic, and Check your head where they picked up their own instruments and actually jammed on about half the tracks. They continued that for the rest of their career. If Run DMC are the Kings of Rap, these guys are definitely crowned princes.

The only time the beasties ever did a battle rap was on Professor Booty. It’s only in the last verse and it is only MCA a responding to third bass. But now a days the guys from third bass have nothing but respect for the beasties

For those of us who are Gen X (or Xennial like me), this was one of the first two Beastie Boys song a lot of us heard, because it managed to be a crossover--although I don't remember it crossing over until AFTER Fight for Your Right, because that charted high on the mainstream chart, and then we all hunted down (and immediately memorized) Paul Revere.
(At the time, there were a lot of 'This is how our crew got together, aren't we badasses' rhyming going around.)

Watching your reactions to BB all afternoon and you know I had to dig up my CD collection. Obviously I no longer have the cassettes, so I went as old school as I could. I was jamming Licensed To ILL while rollin through the line at the car wash today.

You got a big hole to go down for this! let's get started.
    Brass Monkey
    So What'cha Want
    She's Crafty
    Sure Shot
    Intergalactic
    Hey Ladies
    No Sleep Til Brooklyn
Beastie Boys.. they were responsible for LL Cool J getting signed to a major label. They all grew up in the NYC area, where you had Beastie Boys, LL, Anthrax, and Public Enemy all within 15 minutes of each other!

License to Ill and Pauls Boutique, are both 100% fire albums. If you're curious about Beastie Boys influence on the culture, check out Chuck D and LL Cool J's speeches before Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 (It's on TH-cam). Powerful stuff.
