Kerry has a lovely voice one of the many great things about GG is the 3 individual voices of Kerry, Derek and Phil Shulman each adding a different colour to the wide palette of sound of Gentle Giant
These guys recorded this brilliant record at Advision Studios, mixed it, packed up and then ... Yes came in right after them and recorded 'Relayer'. That's a lot of great music on a 4-5 month span to come out of one funky studio in 1974!
Yeah, I am a big Prof rock fan. but not of Gentle Giant. but this particular track. Along with Uriah Heap ' Kiss of Freedom' and a few others that I could mention are powerfully brilliant..
Simplesmente, demais! Linda! Linda!
@@tixximmi it really feels like a prayer, even if they never mention God. So this mystical atmosphere both in music and words, looks like a perfect lullaby to me
I was wondering about that. Didn't sound like Derek. Great voice. I was even looking for a live version where you could see the group perform it. Thanks.
Actually Kerry sang lead a lot for, at least, sections of songs, such as the whole beginning section of I Lost My Head, and Runaway, but it is true, he never did live... harmonies yes, but not lead. They said not only because of the falsetto, but also just because his particular style of singing was so gentle (no pun there) and relaxed, that yes, mics and sound systems of the day couldn't pick it up over the power of the instruments without feeding back massively. On some songs Derek would actually sign his lead or nearly lead parts. All great stuff. And you are all great for realizing and caring IMHO. Hat is off to the lot of you!
Masterpiece !!!! Ballata di ampio respiro delicata atmosfera con venature medievali un po' jazzata ottimo il canto di Kerry Minnear il tastierista della band !!!!! Questa versione è più lunga di quella che i Gentle Giant inserirono sul disco The Power and The Glory !!!!!
well , interesting comments , I hesitate to mention GG is all Kerry Minnear -- took me a long time to realize that-- Ray Schulman is the bassist (not Phil) -- give him and the guitarist and the drummer a vehicle from Minnear's compositions and you have perfection ---
Doesn't this track sound heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin's "Over the Hills and Far Away" that was released to the public some eight months before the Power and The Glory sessions began?
My erroneous cite. I was referring to "No Quarter" off the same Led Zeppelin LP. The last 1.5 minutes of Aspirations (instrumental) sounds influenced by the approximate 3 minute to 5 minute middle segment of No Quarter.
In my ears this track was inspired by 16th or 17th century music, especially the style of singing. But nevertheless it is a really great pice of music and it is hart to find ny similar in modern museic.
One of the most beautifull “ballads”, with one of the most beautifull voices here

Well, this song makes justice to the name of the band because it sounds gentle and it's a really giant masterpiece
Yes and Elton John couldn't do this number now could he? Glad they fired him. Worked well for everyone.
So well said! Hear hear!

Relayer was recorded in Chris Squire's garage. But yes, the early 70's were the best for music.

Says it all, really.
My favorite song of Gentle Giant.
Not all of the Gentle Giant songs do it for me, but the ones that do like this one are just exquisite. Beautiful album cover too
Yeah, I am a big Prof rock fan. but not of Gentle Giant. but this particular track.

Yeah not everyone has the required ear to acquire the taste.
Thanks, never heard this version before. One of my favourite Gentle Giant songs

This extended version is my fave.
As the dust settles, see our dreams,
All coming true
It depends on you,
If our times, they are troubled times,
Show us the way,
Tell us what to do.
As our faith, maybe aimless blind,
Hope our ideals and
Our thoughts are yours
And believing the promises,
Please make your claims
Really so sincere.
Be our guide, our light and our way of life
And let the world see the way we lead our way.
Hopes, dreams, hopes dreaming that all our
Sorrows gone.
In your hands, holding everyone's
Future and fate
It is all in you,
Make us strong build our unity,
All men as one
It is all in you.
Be our guide, our light and our way of life
And let the world see the way we lead our way.
Hopes, dreams, dreaming that all our sorrows
Gone forever.

A masterpiece!Genius!
Sincerity vs Honesty vs Earnestness - _words_ it's all we have 🙂
I never hated the word "forever" as much as here, because that meant the song was ending.
I'm so glad they fired Elton before forming GG. Kerry's voice couldn't be duplicated on this song.
I love ds but Kerry just knocks it out of the park true prog MASTERPIECE
A perfect lullaby to me!
It's a religious song. It implies God and/or Jesus.
@@tixximmi it really feels like a prayer, even if they never mention God. So this mystical atmosphere both in music and words, looks like a perfect lullaby to me
@@bluesinside Sounds good to me. It's a great song.
@@tixximmi I would specifically say Christian mysticism, but now im just quibbling Lol
On this song actually, Kerry Minnear is the lead singer.
They never played it live, 'cause he is singing falseto and no decent monitoring or headroom gain before feedback was possible in those days.
I was wondering about that. Didn't sound like Derek. Great voice. I was even looking for a live version where you could see the group perform it. Thanks.
@@DDTCdn-HeavyMetal--- That explains it. Was looking for a live version to watch.
Perfection and Grace. Something we could all use a 'little bit' of these days.

Brilliant! (and timely)
Dan and the super guitar bros brought me here. Beautiful song.
Beautiful! Dang! :)
I must arrange this for viola.
"do whatever you want and follow the rules" - humanological version. "Love God and do whatever you want" - the saint's version.🙂
Sung by Kerry.
Minnear sings in this song!
thanks! this is new to me and quite wonderful to hear. where does this extended version come from?
well , interesting comments , I hesitate to mention GG is all Kerry Minnear -- took me a long time to realize that-- Ray Schulman is the bassist (not Phil) -- give him and the guitarist and the drummer a vehicle from Minnear's compositions and you have perfection ---
"all Kerry Minnear"
Ummm,... no.
Where is this extended version from?
Derek is not singing.
Kerry is.
Great song. This version has a bad transition, though, at 4:34.

I don't hear anything in common between both compositions.
Sorry.

No. Maybe the timbre. But just that.
