- Algebra brings us a new and interesting way to see how math can solve real-world problems! We just have to learn how to construct equations that say something meaningful about a given situation, and then solve them using the techniques we already know. Learn all about how to do this here!

I’m currently studying for my college entrance tests and Mathematics is my waterloo 😔 I’ve been having a difficult time catching up with my classmates because I’ve already forgotten all the basics (e.g., percentage to decimals, even the simple algebraic word problems). I am sooo thankful that I found your channel! When I started planning to study for math, I was at lost because I didn’t know where to start; but when I saw your videos, it carved a clear path for me and it made it easier for me to learn math. Thank you very much for dedicating your time and effort into sharing these teachings. I really really appreciate them! ❤️
Hey I'm also studying for my college entrance exams! Good luck to you shawty
Looks like the 3 of us found a way here
I am also after 3 years of graduating high school I've decided to go back for physics.
kudos to you cuz you are filling those gaps over algebra and learning basics to help you in the future. It is nothing to be ashamed of learning lower grade classes cuz learning is a continuous process
I'm in my 3rd year in College and i came here too 😅
This made me realize how inefficient the education is in my country. We were always taught (especially in math subjects) in a single dimension, or in out of context.
They just drop numbers out of nowhere, don't give real life relatable applications of the equation. Then scare you psychologically calling Algebra a rite of passage, like a bunch of buffoon bullies.
They do not display Math in its beauty and don't deserve to teach Math.
May I ask where are you from?
These people are everywhere and it disgusts me 🥲 they were hired to teach math, but instead they gatekeep it by calling names, saying "ohh this is VERY hard" like as if scaring us make their job easier or something. School has always failed me and will still be no matter the times.
Same! I’m from Ukraine and I was taught to do math in a way wich was too hard to understand. I mean you just solve the problem but you cannot explain why you need to add that much in order to get this.
If I was taught in this way, the Algebra makes sense and my study on this topic would have been a lot of easier! Thank you for the life changing video.
I can't thank you enough, Professor Dave. I can't believe I'm enjoying learning maths once again. I literally have been watching your videos for several hours straight.
I'm watching other videos of yours Street I'm done with the maths playlist and I'm recommending your channel to my friends ASAP.
Much love from Nigeria.
We are damn lucky to come across your channel! Maths was something that I wasn't able to get in to, Always struggled with it solving during my exams. So glad that I found you! Honestly such a life saver. Cheers!
Hehehehehehehhehehhehe
If anyones struggling, I recommend writing every piece of information the question gives you on a piece of paper, and the equation will come to you. The best way to learn conversion to equations is through experience. Much like learning any new language.
thanks for this i needed it
My brain is physically twisted. I can't seem to think abstractly whatsoever. I spent 30 minutes going over the easy warmup problem and then took a break, came back and it's still not clicking. It's physically hurting.
These are amazing! Would it be possible to have a link at the end of each lesson with more exercises? It would help sealing the knowledge in :)
This is AMAZING! I am going into middle school and this is helping me sooo much!
Готовлюсь к ЕГЭ по профильной математике по этому плейлисту)) Афигеть как круто всё объясняет..

@@alyxkrieger6764 ur wlcm
I have a question:
How did you get a singular B at "2B-5+B=70'?
@@kingthief9118 My understanding is the first part is Red has twice the amount of Black minus 5. So because of this you still need to add Black into the equation. which is B and the sum is 70.
@@kingthief9118 You can combine the 2B and B to 3B so you get "3B-5=70" then you do the opposite Operation of -5 (which is +5) to get rid of it and end up with "3B=75" then only divide by 3 to get a singular B (because 3B=3*B and therefore the opposite Operation is Division) and you get "B=25" (because 75:3=25)
i so confused at the answer of comprehension, but after analyzing, i finally understood now
lets call the red marbles as R and black marbles as B.
Since if we add the number of red and black marbles, it would be equal to 70
so it would be R + B = 70
the number of R is 5 less than twice the number of black marbles,
so the equation would be R = 2B - 5, since we still dont know the value of R, lets subtitute the equation to R+B=70,
which becomes (2B-5)+B=70
simplifying by combining terms, turning into 3B-5=70.
so:
for B
3B-5=70
3B=75
B=25
Since we know now B is 25, we can subtitute 25 in equation of R which is:
R=2B-5
R=2(25)-5
R=50-5
R=45
so
R+B=70
45+25=70

Hello profesor Dave thank you for learning to algebra world problem
thank you very much!!!
Thanks 🙏🏽🙏🏽
didn't know algebra is not that complicated... thank god I saw your channel
Awesome!
This is why I hate bloody word problems. And when I say hate I am using the true and pedantic definition for that word. For that multiples of three problem I had no idea where to start but once you showed just one of the potential ages in the formula I was able to write the rest of it.
solving the word problems gave me the same feeling I have when solving rubiks cubes, I use algorithms I learned online to make solving them a lot easier and it makes for a calming yet somewhat challenging experience. i love it!
thank so much Teacher dave

My problem with this is that these are fairly pointless riddles, so my brain kind of shuts off because it knows they don't really matter. I'd like to see how algebra is used in engineering to build and fix things. That would better keep my interest.
The problem is that to actually show you how these are used in practice, would require a lot of extra background knowledge, that is beyond the scope of a general math class. This is why it is common to use these seemingly pointless riddles as a starting point to understand the concept.
Here's an example problem I've had to solve for a real world application.
A beam is 10 feet long, and supports a uniform load. It needs to be supported at two points along its length. Determine the locations of the supports to maximize its strength.
This is a problem that you can solve with the tenants of Algebra 1, if you are given the theory behind it worked out for you. You'll end up solving the following system of equations, for span s and equal cantilevers of c:
c^2/2 = s^2/8 - c^2/2
2*c + s = 10
The solution:
s = 10*(2 - sqrt(2)) = 5.86 ft
c = 10*(sqrt(2) - 1)/2 = 2.06 ft
However, this is sophomore-in-college level background material that you'd need to know, to be able to set this up from first principles, and understand why the equations apply to the situation the way that they do.
would you need to subtract 18 and why
It would be really nice if you would slow your explanations down so that we can write them down as the pop up to follow along. Just a suggestion.
Is it only me so stupid? On 1.47 is said that their ages are consecutive multiples of three. Doesn't multiple mean *, but not +? So, why does Pr Dave sum up their ages instead of multiplying?
A multiple of 3 doesn't specifically mean it is a number Multiplied by 3, rather the number is a multiple of 3. So the number could be a 3 or a 27 or anything that is a factor of 3. hence +3 ,+6 etc.
This was my least favourite part of math - but it is very practical and glad I slogged through it
Before I saw the answer in comprehension , *R = 5 < 2B*
I honestly don’t have problems with the problem solving shit. It’s the solving for equations for me 💀
Regarding the question involving the spots. I thought the spots are supposed to add up to 68? 10+16 is 26.
2R + 3J =68
(substituting)
2*(10) + 3*(16)=68
20 + 48 =68
68 = 68
(the problem says that this formula: 2R + 3J ... gives you 68, does that make sense?)

Please help me to solve this problem. The value of x is 2 and the value of y is 4 determine the mathematical statement when the x is thrice the value of y

x = 3y
this proves how inadequate the amount of mathematical skills i have
Sally age = y
Gabby age = x
y = 2x - 3
y = 24 - 3

b + r = 70
r = 2b - 5
b + 2b - 5 = 70

sir how to generate equation on my own
You have to use the doomsday algorithm to donate some fibanchi numbers through the square terms to the power of 32 in particular to have a fighting chance. But maybe slash square root of milk powder followed by a cow whooohhehe and you're good and on your way to generating a fibanchi equation sequence good luck brother and one more thing. JESUS.

Can you help me how to solve this one. Thank you
Maria had b pesos. She spends 50 pesos for a snack and d pesos for her cellular load. How much money left?
The first statement is that she starts with b pesos.
The second statement allows me to conclude that she later has b - 50 - d pesos.
We only have 1 equation and 2 unknowns, which means we don't have enough information.
You need at least as many equations as unknowns, to solve for them. Linear equation systems require n equations and n unknowns, and will have one set of solutions for them. While non-linear equations can have multiple solutions, and you then may need additional information to make sense of which solution counts as *the* solution.

Why didn't they say "Sally is three years younger but twice the age of Gabby"???? the than makes no sense
He said, "Sally is 3 years younger THAN twice the age of Gabby"
So that means we construct our equation from this information as:
2*G = S - 3
Sally looks young for her age
It's much easier to grab the dogs and count the spots on the spot 🙃🙃
I've been stucked in this lesson for hours now :)
Hi Teacher and friends
Thanks teacher for this useful introduction.
Pls teacher or friends I can't understand two things in Age Word Problems.
1. Why most comments are turned off in these topics while they are advanced and not meant for kids.
2.Why mathematically it's working when we say eg A 8yrs is twice the age of B 4 yrs and after 2 yrs A 10 and B 6 it's now not working as A is twice B.
Pls help
The first example didn't make sense

Professor Dave Explains
It might help if you specified what you don't understand. Otherwise, Prof. Dave can only point to the video as a whole instead of a specific part because it sounds like you don't understand the entire video as opposed to, say, how he managed to construct the algebraic equations from the word problems, or how he solved each equation.
Being specific is important to clearing roadblocks in learning, or your teacher/teachers can't properly help you. That way, his reply of "watch one more time!" may not read as sarcastically as it looks because he basically can't tell you anything more.
@Ronald Mike same here didn't understand a thing

Hi professor Dave, thanks so much for your wonderful teachings. Pls I would like to know how the "2B" became "3B" and how the "70" became "75". Thank you very much sir.
R = 2B - 5
2B - 5 + B = 70 (we don't need those brackets)
3B - 5 = 70 (2B + 1B or just B = 3B)
3B - 5 + 5 = 70 + 5 (we add 5 to both sides)
3B = 75
3B /3 = 75 / 3 (we divide both sides by 3)
B = 25
R = 2 * 25 - 5
R = 50 - 5
R = 45
Hope I could answer your questions :)
a "b" essentially means 1b, so you are adding 2b + 1b which are similar in kind so they can be summed as 3b.
in (2b - 5) + b = 70
since -5 is the only whole number, you *inverse* it and it turns to 5. Then you apply that to each side's whole numbers:
(2b - 5 + 5) + b = 70 + 5
becomes:
(2b) + b = 75
We inverse whole numbers themselves from the side where the letters are ("b") to get rid of them from that side once they become 0.
in this jasper having six more spots than rover which mean j+6 = r not r+6=j
I think if you plug in some numbers you'll see that you're incorrect.

b + 2b - 5 = 70
3b - 5 = 70/+5
3b = 75/:3
b = 25
