    I think the Robert Goulet joke works so well because of the emotional reaction he has to the idea that his manager told him to shut up as well as the absurdity of him so quickly and easily believing Nelson, a child he has presumably never met before

    I forgot how many gags in this episode became classics. When I was a kid, Burns' reminiscing of crippling an Irishman was the funniest thing in the world. The crossfades of him chuckling in various locations is such a perfect summary of his sadistic nature.

    For those who are big memers & haven't seen this episode yet, this is the episode where Homer burst into Bart's room in the middle of the night, warning him about Boogymen in the house. I honestly don't know how that became a meme unlike Bart hitting Homer with a chair did. Probably because of Bart screaming afterwards.

    Maybe a video on seemingly one-off things that stick? Lisa getting into jazz, Lisa becoming a vegetarian, Lisa becoming a Buddhist (weird that the three most prominent ones are for Lisa), Barney getting sober (before relapsing in a throwaway joke), etc. Home became the plant's safety inspector, and that seemed to stick for a while, until it disappeared.
    I wonder if there's a reason Lisa's character has been allowed to have lasting changes while Bart hasn't.
    Great work. Keep it up, and happy holidays :)

    • @ToonReel001
      @ToonReel001 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Largely because most of Lisa's changes involved topical lifestyles being endorsed by a celebrity. McCartney and Gere in fact only agreed to do their role if those elements stuck for the rest of the series.

Stuff like the Rain Man joke and the casino pitch jokes are *very* outdated, but then stuff like the Siegfried and Roy joke (despite how dark it eventually became) and the entire recession aspect of the plot are weirdly prophetic. This is a weird episode man.

    I think it maybe helps that we're used to elements in the Simpsons being the pivot in an episode and never being brought up again, so the casino (or rather two casinos) just existing afterwards isn't that glaring an issue. Plus this episode was really good at semi-finalising side plots in rapid fire gags like Lisa's contest entry and Burns ditching the casino to go back to his plant.
    What I like is that Homer's incompetence in this episode sets up to an epic (if still in character) role reversal, a rare bit of insight from the guy we really don't expect from this particular episode. Concerning Bart I guess it's just him at his best when in a supporting role, being his devious self and making the best of the current situation, much like Homer is trying to and at least bungling some sort of payoff. It's one of those episodes where they have an easier time immersing into the current events (if through ignorance of the seriousness of them), while Marge and Lisa's neuroses take them over, ironically in spite of Marge actually trying to enjoy herself for once.

      It's a reference to the film Rain Man, and the guy is supposed to be autistic. Hence the joke not aging well.

    I imagine that even though the national economy might’ve been doing OK, a lot of local economies must’ve been struggling around 1993, with American manufacturing being on the decline and all that, so Springfield’s situation wouldn’t really be off.

    My favorite thing about the Gerry Cooney moment is the contrast with Barney interacting with Joe Frazier. Barney gets the crap beaten out of him after provoking Frazier and Otto lays out Gerry Cooney in one hit with little provocation.

    • @ToonReel001
      @ToonReel001 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Granted that was because Frazier's kids demanded Frazier always win a fight, while Cooney supposedly had no outside interference preventing him being a good sport to the gag.

    Allow me, if you will, to help you put this into MY perspective of the episode. I was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV. Before you ask, no, we do NOT live “in the casino”! Please stop asking. This episode was heaven on earth for a kid like me. The casinos are frankly more trouble than they’re worth. This doesn’t mean I’m against gambling, but when you watch your local schools consistently and shockingly deteriorate over and OVER again, but the casinos just added a new rooftop pool they’re cramming drunk idiots into during COVID when school kids can’t even play outside at all because of 🎶 ☁️ “the symmmmptoms”! ☁️ 🎶 Then you would love this episode too 😅 go easy on the Kissinger scene, I feel about it what you feel about the Robert Goulet scene. Lmao 😜 they card read gud! Love these videos, and if you’d like, I can also explain why that scene is funny with a literal quote from the scene: “VERA said that…?!” The shock, the anchor to reality while also clearly distorting what is believable *chef’s kiss* MmmMMM! That’s GOOD plastic explosive- I mean- comedy 😂
