Matt, I agree with you on the bobbin threader, any bobbin large enough to stick that one through, I can suck the thread through with my mouth. The hackle plyers look great. The pad on the bottom of the hair stacker dampens the shock that stacks the hair, so I prefer no pad. Most scissors that fail to cut is because I drop them. The whip finish tool looks good, the one I have works well, I have been whip finishing more by hand especially if there are lots of materials in the way. As for the bodkin, I have been using some micro crochet hooks for many tasks I used to use the bodkin for, I spent $10 for about a dozen at a garage sale. Thanks for the tool review and the give-away. cheers my friend. Have you fished at all on Back Creek near Gore VA. Thanks Matt.
Exactly right Lee! That's something I haven't talked about but have done plenty of times myself-- sucking the thread through the tube. :-) And one other method if you're traveling and forgot the threader, just use some UTC ultra wire. I've done that a few times too. My first bodkin was one of my mom's sewing needles taped to a pencil. Regarding Back Creek, I've never fished it but I go through Winchester on the way to my farm in western Maryland. I don't get all the way to Gore, but just after Winchester I head north up through Paw Paw and my farm is just across the WV/MD border. So is Back Creek worth stopping by? I could probably stop for a couple hours someday when I'm heading out...
Hmm, a pet bunny or a periodic dubbing source? 😊 great channel Matt and thanks for the effort you go through. One can never have enough bobbins. I'm up to 5 and I wish I had more. Also funny that you prefer form on the bottom of your stacker. A couple tyers have recommended to me to strip off the cork. Says it absorbs too much energy and impedes the stacking process.
I've heard that too about the foam or cork on the bottom of your stacker. I've never noticed a difference but might have to start paying attention to it. And I have so many rabbits but most of this last litter are the black and white Dutch breed. (And they're too cute to make dubbing out of!)

Ha! As far as my wife knows, that's all I have too. The cool thing about fly tying materials and tools, I can order a lot and she just sees the small package arrive. I recall a couple of times spending a small fortune on an order and the package is small enough to fit in my mailbox! Who would have thought that two hundred dollars worth of hooks will fit in an envelope? Oh well... such is the life of a fly tying addict. :-) Thanks for the laugh Todd...
Center drawer of my roll top desk tying bench looks like a tool store but if I see a new tool that looks useful it joins the others.Very good helpful video,Matt.
Excellent review Matt. I already have the tools in that kit so I’m not going to enter. Hopefully it goes to someone who needs the contents. Take care Matt.

Hahahaha that's good stuff #bunny just hoppn thru the house keep the good stuff rollin Matt we all appreciate everything you do for this awesome fishing community
Oh man, I have some bunny stories. Mostly in two outdoor colonies, separated with male and females. But they're all the time digging out and sneaking across to get to the other pen. I eventually gave up so I have two females living free range in my back wood shed. Then a male got out and these two does have both had litters. I bring the babies in as soon as I can catch them (or else the wildcats and foxes will get them). I couldn't bear to make dubbing out of these little guys so I'll keep them inside with me until they're old enough to take to the Amish farmer's market. Fun times on the Savage Flies farm. :-)
Interesting info on the costs. I recommend against using any wire for threading bobbin holders. I scratched up the inside of the tubes of 2 of my bobbin holders with wire threader. Buy some dental floss threaders (very cheap) to thread bobbin holders. They are very good for all holders & especially for those with narrow tubes like on the Rite bobbins. I now use those 2 scratched up bobbin holders to hold & apply my non-lead weighting wire. Note to Matt, that would be a good use for that Not so favorite bobbin holder.
Bob- excellent tips! Someone else mentioned the dental floss threaders. I'm going to have to look into them. And an even better idea about using these Umpqua bobbin holders for wire wraps. I doubt I'll be using them much in my regular tying so I might as well repurpose them for something. Thanks for the note!
@@SavageFlies I hold the very tip of the wire in EZ-Hackle Pliers, wrap the wire using the unloved bobbin holder to making touching turns going forward just as I would do with thread, & then wiggle the wire to snap it off cleanly. I recommend holding hold the hook just before the snap-off point & holding the wire directly, just beyond the end of the end of the bobbin holder so the holder tip doesn’t get damaged. Then remove the hackle pliers & complete the wrap there. It’s faster & creates almost no wasted wire.

Great review Matt, this would be a great starter kit that I would have jumped on if they had something like this when I first started. But that was many years ago! It will be a great addition for someone who is just getting into the hobby.
Thanks James, and yes it's a solid kit. And not just for a beginner, some of the tools are pretty good! One of my first kits was from Cabela's way back in the day and that was just good enough to tie a few flies and make me realize I should probably upgrade a few of the tools. Thanks for watching my friend. :-)
@@SavageFlies I know the kit! I have upgraded all of my tools and was a big fan (still am) of the Griffin bobbins but then I tried the Stonfo Elite bobbins! Wow!
Great video, I’ve been tying on and off for 2 years now but recently I tie almost every day going through your tutorials. Keep the amazing videos #bunny
Great review Matt. I would agree that the whip finish tool is a good one. The handle is a little larger than generic ones but yet not too big to handle. I am spoiled with my Rite and Stonfo bobbins. I would have a hard time using anything else.
Thanks Jon- and I'm with you 100% there. I like my Stonfo but it takes me some tweaking to get the right tension so it's a great one to put a spool in it, get it adjusted, and not have to mess with until you use all the thread. I think the Rite bobbins are better if you do a lot of thread change outs. But you know the one I've found myself going to more and more this past year? It's the C&F. It's not sold at a lot of places but this thing has been a champ for me. I got mine from Bearsden I think (www.bearsden.com/product8908.html). A bit pricey so I only have one, but man do I like it. :-)
Good video! Wanted to try a new fly tying toy and got the Umpqua Dreamstream+ Whip Finish Tool. Something I do not understand, what is that piece of metal sticking out at the end of handle used for? Also, in comparison to others whips there is not way to hold the whip sturdy and not spinning at the beginning of the whip setup.
#Bunny, We all have likes and dislikes on tools. I collect enough junk that I can not see spending a lot on kits that have things I don’t like. But I like to try things. Great job Matt. There is a guy I know that repairs rods and reels for kids that don’t have much. I’m giving him things I don’t like or use any more to give to them.
That tool kit looks really nice, and btw I didn't even know most of these, maybe some that you keep mentioning on your videos... wow. I know everyone knows about those tools, but I think at some point you will need a C-stand to get your camera up there and zoom into those small tools, just for the 2 peeps that can't see from this far away 😉
Great point Otto! I can't remember, have you reviewed a C-stand? I think you have... one of the first videos of yours I watched. I still haven't gotten around to getting one though...
Great give away Matt, expensive too. Would love to take a chance but I'll pass to a beginner, I know good tools would help. Your review was honest too. By the way, how many bald spots does your bunny have? ;o) Also, I know you already bought Sharron E. Wright's book but the Spring 2021 issue of Fly Tyer had a piece from her book, dissecting Carrie Steven's Blue Devil... a bit of "fly forensics". Cheers
Ha! I've got enough bunnies that they wouldn't miss a few patches of fur. I don't mess with them though; they're my little buddies. :-) And funny you mention that article, I've got the magazine sitting right here on my desk. I have flipped through the article but it didn't dawn on me that this was by Sharon Wright, the lady we were talking about just a week or so ago. It was quite an interesting article. I'll definitely take a closer look at it when I get her book and try my hand at tying some of the classic Stevens streamers. Thanks for the note!
@@SavageFlies You're welcome. fyi, Piscator has a tutorial on tying a Carrie Steven's streamer. Now I'm hungry for cacciatore like my nonna made for me. Ciao!
Russ- no unfortunately I have never used the Umpqua one. I have used the Loon and it looks similar enough. I use the line straightener (the leather patch with rubber inside it) for straightening my leaders quite often. And I do have the line dressing/cleaner tool but have only used it once. It worked fine and I should probably clean my line more often, but I'm generally too lazy to do it. :-)
Thanks Bernie! I'm glad you reminded me as I haven't read that yet this year. Might be time to pull it off the shelf before some of the spring hatches hit. Good luck and, Thanks for watching my friend. :-)
A great threading tool for a bobbin is a needle threader used in sewing. Especially ones used for threading a surger. They are long and thin enough to go through the eye and of a needle.
Doug, this is a great tip! I had never heard of a serger needle threader before but just checked it out and it definitely looks like it would work with some pretty thin tube bobbins. Thanks for the note. :-)
Thanks for the thorough review Matt! I've been looking at some of the Dreamstream+ tools for a couple of months, but just haven't pulled the trigger because I haven't had the chance to handle them yet. #bunny
You're most welcome Ted. Just to recap, the three out of this kit I would recommend would be the hackle pliers (I love them), the whip finish tool, and the hair stacker. The rest are serviceable but you can certainly get a better bobbin for not much more.
Butch- that might be one of the Dr. Slick tool kits with the fly box under it. I can't remember though. If you're still using your tools from the 1970s, I'm sure you could use an upgrade of a couple. So good luck on this one!
If you're talking about this one ( amzn.to/3a03oFt ) I haven't actually tried it out. But just looking at it online right now, I think it's a decent kit. The scissors look solid, the bobbin holder does appear to have a ceramic tip (a plus), and it does have a Matarelli whip finish tool. But I also like the XFishman one as well ( amzn.to/3A4ELSK ). Its biggest plus was four bobbins and two pairs of decent scissors. Thanks for the note. I just ordered the SF kit so I can review it. Keep on the lookout for that in the next couple of weeks. :-)
@@SavageFlies the $40 one was the one I’m talking about yes. I could be wrong in the clone of the Umpqua, these could be a clone of the Loon. Sent you an email as well with some more questions.
i would enter this but i only am missing the hair stacker so everything else would just be a double up. As much as I would love to have a free tool kit id rather it go to someone without anything. thanks for the giveaway though, much appreciated :)

Thank you for creating these reviews. I’m new to this hobby and these are quite useful discussions. I’d love to see a review series on products made in the US. I’m just interested in American-made products for my own reasons, and it has nothing to do with politics or other peoples’ beliefs. I know there’s a lot of folks out there who support slavery, state-sponsored genocide, censorship, and the myriad human rights violations perpetuated by the PRC against the good people of Chinese and Tibet. For some the abduction, and possible execution, of a young, Chinese female tennis player is acceptable if it keeps the price of braid scissors under $5, and matchbox cars under $1 each at the Walmart. Others of us don’t mind paying a little more if it means the fruits of our labor aren’t supporting crimes against humanity. Just as a small mountain spring flows down joining other brooks and creeks to become mighty rivers that fill oceans, perhaps one day small decisions at the margin will swell into powerful forces of positive change. Perhaps; but today I’m just looking for a solid, American-made setup for tying flies and catching fish. Thank you for your reviews.

#bunny and thanks for the compliment on the shoe rack to hold materials. It frees up a lot of space.
You bet Tim. :-) And good luck my friend!
I was thinking about adding some new tools and these look like a great set. #bunny I'll be sending along a bench picture soon.
You got it William. Good luck my friend!
Hi Matt . I think that I have had most my tools from early 70's.nice Review thanks Matt# BUNNY
HAY Matt I saw someone with a tool box and lifted the foam out and under that was the foam like a fly box.
Butch- that might be one of the Dr. Slick tool kits with the fly box under it. I can't remember though. If you're still using your tools from the 1970s, I'm sure you could use an upgrade of a couple. So good luck on this one!
What would you rate the SF Fly Tying kit…I do believe they knocked off Umpqua. They are about half the cost.
Please keep up the reviews on various fly tying equipment !! #bunny I'll definitely send you a picture of my tying area as well.
Thanks David! You don't need to send a picture of your bench. You've sent me flies! I know you're a tier. :-)
#bunny I could do with another pair of scissors and the box would be well handy thanks for the review Matt
You bet Ter. And thanks for watching my friend!
Sending picture soon
You got it Christopher; I'll keep on the lookout for it!
i would enter this but i only am missing the hair stacker so everything else would just be a double up. As much as I would love to have a free tool kit id rather it go to someone without anything. thanks for the giveaway though, much appreciated :)
I really appreciate that my friend. And I'm sure the new tier out there without many tools who does win it will appreciate it too! Thanks for watching. :-)
Never used Umpqua tools but I may have to check them out great video as always #bunny
Appreciate it Steven. Thanks for watching my friend. :-)
#bunny. I’ve been enjoying your video reviews as well as your fly tying videos, appreciate all the effort you put into making them. I’m sure I could put that tool kit to good use.
You got it Nina. I got your picture and you're entered! And I appreciate you watching my friend. :-)
Would like to see that video of your favorites. Nice kit be the way. #bunny
Thomas- noted! That might be an easier video to make than my shadow box one. Which I haven't forgotten about by the way!! Still on my to-do list. :-)
Thanks for the review. Just sent you a photo of my tying desk #bunny
Steve- I got it; You're good my friend!
Thanks Matt . I always enjoy the videos. #bunny
Appreciate it Chip! Thanks for watching my friend. :-)
Hey Matt, can I send you a picture of my stuff in a tote? I've just moved and I don't have a bench set up yet, and might not for a while, I'm getting ready to move into a motor home so I can go fishing for the rest of my life. I liked the honesty in your review. Keep the good stuff coming. #bunny
Johnny- whatever you want to send is fine. I know you're a tier. Nobody else would have watched as many of my videos and left funny comments if they weren't fellow tying nerds like us. :-)
I like the reviews. Learning so much watching you tie. #bunny
Thank you! And I appreciate you watching my friend. :-)
Great video as usual Matt. Honest and to the point. #bunny
Thanks Jeremy! Always appreciate you watching my friend. Good luck!
I bought two kits with cases. They never go back in the case.
Yeah, that sounds about right Ray! I suppose for someone who traveled a lot they might use the case but my tools are pretty much always sitting on my bench. :-)
Thanks for the review! It looks like a great upgrade kit for me as I have all the beginner tools! #bunny
Thanks Justin and good luck! And I saw your bench... you're doing pretty good there. You are using a Rite bobbin after all. One of the best ones out there. :-)
Nice set of tools, thanks Matt!
#bunny
Appreciate it John! Thanks for watching my friend. :-)
use loop for teeth in tube on bobbins to not damage
Dental floss? That's actually a good idea. Thanks John!
@@SavageFlies no it’s a blue loop to pull floss between teeth plastic and doesn’t cut tube comes in a pack of about 12 i think round loop with a straight peice
@@millholland738 Excellent John! Thanks for the clarification. :-)
#bunny
Lol, nice Matt👍
Thanks Jim; I got your picture and you're good to go my friend!
I actually bought my first vise a couple days ago and was looking for tools which is how I came across this video. I really appreciate the honest opinions on them. #bunny
Thanks Tyler. I got your picture so you're good to go my friend. And welcome to the sometimes crazy community of fly tiers. :-)
Tyler- congratulations, I just did the drawing and you were the winner. I've got your email from the picture of your bench you sent me so look for an email from me here shortly. Cheers. -Matt
@@SavageFlies I never win anything, I'm stoked! Thank you so much for being such a great resource and going through things in a way that makes it all seem manageable. I've been looking at tool sets for the past week, now I don't have to anymore! I'm super excited to tie up some of the 'craft store' flies, keep 'em coming!
@@t-money9031 That's awesome Tyler. And it's why I started the channel! To help and encourage new tiers to get into the sport. And I know these tools will go to good use so I'm excited too. PS: I'm dropping off at the post office this morning. :-)
@@SavageFlies Just got the tool kit, thank you for the stickers in addition to the tools! Already tied up a couple flies, can't wait to try them!
#bunny hey thanks for the chance to win Matt!! Great video as always!!
Appreciate it Franky. If you didn't get the red duck feathers yet, hopefully they'll get to you tomorrow. Cheers. -Matt
@@SavageFlies ya i haven't got them yet!! Thanks Matt
@@huntingmissouri5420 Hopefully soon!

Nice kit. Would make a great kit for travel.
Agree Mark! The case is really top notch. But hey, if you want to enter, make sure to put the hashtag in this comment. You should be able to go back and edit to add it. (Otherwise, the random comment picker won't include your comment!)
Hi Matt,we don't need no more tools, but our grand daughter would like them. Can't rember if you have a pic. of our bench or not but I send you a pic #bunny
Ken- I've got a picture of your bench (and I just got another one!). Anyway, I know you and Linda are tiers. You two can always enter my friend. :-)
#bunny Nice video Matt, I like the kit.
Thank you Gian. Good luck my friend! 👍
Thanks Matt. #BUNNY
You're good Richard. And thanks for watching my friend!
LOL hope your BUNNY doesn't feel your eyes upon her fur and mistake your affection for simply an attempt to obtain fly tying materials!
Ha! I've got so many rabbits right now... but haven't been able to bring myself to make dubbing out of any of them yet. :-)
#bunny Grandson needs a set. Thanks for honest review.
You're good Allen and I got your picture. Good luck!

#bunny
Looks like a solid kit #bunny
Yep, some solid tools in this one. Good luck my friend!
Never tried their tools before. #bunny
Thanks for watching George. They're pretty solid (even though I'd probably skip the bobbin holder and go with a Rite bobbin.)
Awesome Channel #bunny
Appreciate it Marc!
Always need new tools #bunny
Kurt- I got your picture. Just in time too as I'm about to do the drawing. :-)
Yeah, the price point is too high. It would make a good travel kit though which is why I'm going to say, #bunny
Yep, for 80 bucks I would have expected a bit more. Overall it's solid, but after really considering it I think new tiers can get a little more bang for their buck by picking and choosing.
Great looking kit. Sent the email of my desk #bunny
I got you Nicholas; you're entered my friend!
Hey Matt just sent you some pics and a email about my setup #bunny
I got it James and you're good my friend! Thanks for watching. :-)
