- There are so many things said and written about the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, a legendary German fighter aircraft, that it’s fair to assume that it’ll take you at least a lifetime to even scratch the surface of the subject. People often say that it was the best, the most influential work by Kurt Tank... But was that actually true? If we speak strictly about engineering and design, the first ever Fw 190 to take to the skies wasn’t really groundbreaking in any way. Yes, in the era dominated by new aircraft with inline engines, Kurt Tank and Rudolf Blaser decided to equip their fighter with a radial engine... But that was around the time when engineers all around the world were warming up to the idea of using radial engines once again: in the summer of 1940, when Germans were testing their Fw 190 prototype, the French introduced the MB.150, the Soviets - the I-180, and the US - the iconic Corsair. Maybe the German fighter was built using cutting edge materials? Nope. Aerodynamics? Nothing out of the ordinary; it didn’t have a laminar flow wing, nor was it equipped with interesting new high-lift devices. Granted, the aircraft was known for its extensive use of electrically powered equipment, but Kurt Tank wasn’t the first one to do that: take the Petlyakov VI-100, for example.

Also funny how German pilots who flew the 190 in WW2 were saying that they could outturn anyone they faced. Yet in the game it's again the opposite.
I heard somewhere that it wasn't because of the airframe, but rather it was easier/simpler to fly compared to contemporary fighters. The cockpit was designed to be very ergonomic so the pilot could focus on the battle and not too distracted to the controls. And as mentioned in the video the plane also used many electrically powered equipments and some even automated to some degree, like the flaps and cooling system. Take all this with a grain of salt though as I got all this long time ago so I might get things wrong.
Russian biased game
Aircraft like the spitfire, Jaks and La's could turn tighter than a fw 190, but above 300 kmh the fw 190 finished a full circle faster with less energy lost. Keep your speed up in a fw 190 and you will finish your circle faster. Avoid two circle fights stick to one circle fight and you should come in a good shooting position in a 190.
From a pilot perspective and adding survivor bias, both pilots are correct. The Russian pilot who claimed he could turn tighter than any fw 190, and the 190 pilot who claims he could outurn any soviet fighter.
But the roll rate of the 190 was almost unchallenged. Which makes it incredible quick in changing directions initially.

Funny how IRL the plane was designed to be easy to land, so it could also land on fields and improvised airfields, yet in the game it's awfully difficult to land, because just a second of brake time and the thing flips. Good job Gaijin.

Skill issue. U do know they use pedals to brake right? So its in their control on how much power they need in the brakes. Its the same in dcs and il2 sturmovik. Maybe you lack self control

Use the rudder to keep tail on the ground. I cant see how people cant figure this out on their own
It’s not hard to land if you know how to land properly. Most War Thunder players land way too fast. You should be touching down under 200 km/h.
As an american german i often find myself saying "ohhh yeahhh german horsepower!" the fighter planes are swift and have great guns while the tanks sound just beastly and usually have a gun that can yeet people from range.

You skipped the one unique thing about the 190 A and F variants. Its BMW engine had the interesting "command device", which automatically controlled pop pitch, fuel mix, ignition, etc. It was decades ahead of its time.

@@niume7468 I don't think so. I never read that, plus much deal has always been made about the 190 A/F planes having this interesting ability. I don't know where they'd put such a device on an inline-V engine. Further, I believe it was just a BMW idea. The 190 Doras didn't even have it because they used inline-V Jumo engines.
It was also produced using Jewish slave labor. BMW, Mercedes, Benz Daimler, all utilized the relatively cheap labor provided by nearby concentration camps that the German state had determined to be “sub-human”. It would be cool if the game incorporated a kind of sabotage dynamic, where randomly your engine fails due to an intentional fault placed their by a starving prisoner

I love this plane. When playing as Germany I almost always choose the FW-190 over the BF-109.

I use the Fw 190 against bombers and the Bf 109 against other fighter. But the Fw is much more fun to fly and all this crazy guns are soooooooo useful and awesome.
Same the engine and guns are far better fw190 has never overheated for me unless damaged

I was surprised that a variant is still produced! I imagine that they're really expensive, but having one has now become a desire for me. I already have the prospect to have a pilot's license, so that's the next step.

D9 variant is absouletly a beast (especially in the game). I have 4-5 K/D ratio with about 500 kills with it.
The good news for the Allies is that the Germans had no good forced induction system to make the radial engine a series perform at altitude which meant they weren't a threat b-24s B17s and Lancasters leaving the BF 109 and it's limited armament to be the only German fighter that could fight at those altitudes

Cool Video. In my opinion the Fw 190 is a great combat vehicle. It has no truly good turn time but its great for boom and zoom. You can use it for some Szenarios too like if the enemy fighter targets a mate and you can get on his tail. All in all it makes fun to fly this Aircraft :)

British test pilot Eric Brown (Who, it must be said, flew just about every aircraft in the allied and axis stable) just LOVED the FW190. He thought, it was probably one of the best fighters in the war, what it it's adaptability, firepower, ease of flight and other factors.

I love the fw190...absolutely amazing plane. used the A1 and the A4 variants to grind almost the entirety of the German tree up until the jets.

Dieses Flugzeug hatte ein sogenanntes "Kommandogerät" welches die Motorparameter und den Pitch des Propellers gleichzeitig steuerte. Es war das erste Motor Steuergerät überhaupt, und eine richtungsweisende Entwicklung. Wenn man sieht wer den Motor gebaut hat , ist eigentlich alles klar.

Ever since i got my hands on the Fw190A i have loved the plane. Even more than the better turn fighter BF 109 F-2! Having so much fire power is a gift of being able to damage aircraft badly in one pass.

Curiosity: the Dora/Ta-152 just conserved its tail because of german production at the end of the war and lack of attention, which caused it to have its airframe "under production" until the end of the war, that is why they never changed it or even the wing tips
Later (high altitude) variants of the FW-190D (Dora) were fitted with inline engines.

Fw-190 A-9 when?
While I love the 190, and would probably prefer it, if i had to fly it, I still have to give my vote to the 109, in my opinion the greatest WWII aircraft ever... still competive with the latest allied designs, after almost 10 years in service! Even Erich Hartmann and Gunther Rall loved their 109s at the end. Although this was admittedly to personal familiarity other than any real objective comparison.

@Kssavv Actually I would respectfully disagree, the 109G10, K4 and maybe even G14 had a better climb rate, turning radius (at medium to low speeds)and better weapon harmonization ( two 13mm and either a 20mm or 30mm cannon through the propeller hub) than the "shotgun effect " of multiple .50 or .303 calibre and 20mm cannon spraying. One good blast and your enemy is done.
However, I believe it all comes down to pilot skill level, well trained and experienced German pilots were able to out fly and out fight allied pilots in older 109G6.

I like this part witch engine choosing... Its not like RLM force using spare engines to other project and DB6XX be priority for Messerschmitt designs.

Dual-stage superchargers on radial engines take all alot of space America already had radial at 1700 HP used in Mitchell bombers they jumped ahead to the 2000 horsepower Pratt & Witt worked out well for them

Please could you explain the best ways to fight using the Fw190, generally speaking but especially the earlier types.
The most important thing is to stay fast or out of reach, because the 190 does not perform well at low speeds.

Indeed I have my best results in air combat with the american Fw 190 A-8 (rank IV, BR 5.3). It somewhat surprised me because while looking at the data sheet, I didn't find anything great except the strong weaponry.

It's a Fw 190 A-5/U12 with the 2x MG 103 30mm cannon pods equipped.

With the help of Kurth Tank India also produced a fighter a/c" HAL HF 24.("Asia's First super sonic a/c.)
Due to some unknown reasons,production stopped.
Even though I was in IAF (1965--1986), never saw it.For 15 years I was working with MiG a/c.

It wasn't due to unknown reasons it was because the engine being built by the brits stopped getting funds and then they asked the Indians to fund it but they were too cheap and decided not to and instead just bought the mig 21.
Fw 190 This is not air combat, but rather an attack on the ground, such as tanks and ground guns, more precisely infantry support.
Question I hear about a Fw 190 z-16 and z-17 they said around 40 and 60 were made but didn’t enter into service is it true or just a people making up???

The 190 is good because its ability to be used in ANY type of battle. Air? Get ur 20 mils, ground? Get your bombs or in mid tier get the 30 mils. Naval? Get the torpedo 190
