For those who don’t know, “Luz” means light in Spanish, and isn’t an uncommon name in Spanish-speaking countries. ‘Z’ in Spanish is pronounced like an ‘s’, so the name is pronounced “loose”.
White people would name they’re kid “Loose” because it’s inspired by the Spanish word for light

So my sister was a lil dumb with her baby names twice. The first kid was fine, Keith Allan, didn't have a problem with that. But then she texted me that her daughter was going to be named "Amalia" and knowing she's not great with spelling, I texted back, "Amelia?" She said "that's how it'll be pronounced but this is how we're spelling it." No further explanation. I tried to explain that the child would be correcting literally anyone who read her name off a page but she ignored me. Now that the kid is 6, she claims they knew all along that it's the Spanish spelling of the name and that's what they were going for. The child has no Spanish heritage but a Spanish spelling of her name. Cool. Her younger brother, I secretly refer to as Moon Moon. Because my sister named him Liam William. Liam is literally the second half of William, it's the short version of it!!!! So he's Moon Moon and we share a birthday.

Luz is Spanish for light and Perla is Spanish for pearl. Both are names used in Latin countries.
I think Perla is sweet, I see nothing wrong with Pearl either, provided it's paired with a more traditional or grown up name.
Ugh after having three kids and being a part of online pregnancy groups...there are some ridiculously stupid names out there. Matthew, my middle child, is the only Matthew in his grade...something like Jessica is unheard of in younger generations. That would be a unique name nowadays lol

We see a lot of these in schools today. As a teacher I've noticed that the unique names often belong to kids whose parents are desperate for a unique child, but assume the name will do the work for them.
Extreme uique names as a whole are the kid version of Mason jars at your wedding: you like it, everyone else just thinks it's terrible.
Luz means light and I have met a few women from Mexico named Luz and they pronounce it "luce". Working for a state agency has opened the door to crazy names and it doesn't matter what color...just SMH and pray the kids scrapes together cash to change it some day.
