@@nova-le6mo "Could be if in the wrong hands." Even just a halter can rub a horse raw; or a mechanical hackamore can do some truly awful damage. Carson's point is that, no matter what you use, from snaffle bit to hackamore to spade, you need to be a student and learn to understand your horse and your equipment.

I love Spurs they are a tool. I don't even have to use them. It is solely for positioning& control like a herd leader does, when it nips to keep a colt going. Horses do not object they respect. It's a pure n natural communication for them, even in a herd.

I seldom use spurs more to the lack of my temperament . when used correctly thy are a great tool .
just had a convo with the missus (who has never really been near a real horse) about spurs, she didnt know what they are and i dont know quite enough to explain properly. This did well.... and taught me some more too

Carson, sadly you are having all these fan-girls come on your channel and harassing you. Sir, I believe you are a fantastic horseman, and I agree 100%. It takes learning how to train cow horses and good bridle horses to understand what you are saying. In the cow horse, we use spurs to move our horses shoulder, hindquarters, and body. The horse that is soft to the leg is soft in the mouth, and in the trained bridle horse, you move away from using your horse's mouth, and instead move him with your leg and body, keeping his mouth soft and responsive. Keep showing the true vaquero and buckaroo tradition, as the bridle horses of the true buckaroo are some of the best made.

the proper way to use spurs is not at all..a real horseman doesn't have to use spurs..using spurs is ol' timey cowboy shit when they thought that crap was the way to go

I'm glad you use those kind of spurs, although I ain't a fan on even having those since they were made to control the horse via hitting it's body.

My thoughts are that everything can be abusive. Of course spurs can be abusive because they can be used very violently but they can be also used as an aid to amplify the communication between rider and horse. I personally wouldn't use spurs because I would rather increase my ability with using my seat, legs, hands and core but that's just me.
and maybe I'm wrong but I think it's wrong to let a beginner use spurs. When I was a beginner, my leg flopped everywhere. A barn I went to try out had all riders use spurs and you could tell that when they were trotting, the riders spur was smacking the horses barrel harder than it should be. Not to mention the spurs, unlike in the video, are a lot smaller so not as mild

I jus don't know where would a guy would get one, I knew a buckaroo from a while back who had this particular hat but I never did ask him, he's gone now, they must be made out if gold, that's why their expensive.
@@sd90mac61 I found a hat maker who made me one, Yes pricey. Staker hats did a good job but the sizing was off so I have been stretching' it for a year now just to make it work.

@Camilla Johansson well not necessarily depending on whay type of spur you use like wide round tip definitely cant hurt but in you use say thin tip sharp spurs then yes where you hit a horse with your spurs depends one the horses reaction of speed to the jump so i mean like do a little more research but i can agree sharp spurs defiantly hurt horses

I am reading Black Beauty and I just red to the part that Ginger was abused by those purs and he got bleeding by that. I didn't know what is pur. And after searching for it and seeing this video, I realized that I've seen them a lot on cow boy movies that I was always thought, men wear those shoes as a weapon to fight. Anyway, that a tool to train and to make the horse obey. Bad and violent people can use it to hurt horse sometimes.

You are all right. Spurs can hurt the horse and many people cannot handle spores but if you know how to use them right and when you don’t hurt the horse then it is alright. The spurs are also turning do you don't force the spurs on the horse's skin, but twist them down with the large area on the skin. I also use spurs and it helps me and my horse because give finer help with the spurs than if I hit the horse with my heels. The man forgot to explain many important things, but in general he is right. I‘m sorry for my bad English I’m from Germany.

I understand your point, but also think it's important to consider WHERE on the animal the spurs are being used. I'd love to see a demonstration on a human's stomach as oppose to your hand or leg. I'm sure that would feel quite different. I think liberty work is a great indicator of how unnecessary these tools are.
I have a question since you r saying that you use your Spurs for forward movement what if you have a very sensitive horse would you still use your Spurs like if the horse is doing everything you ask of it without Spurs would next time you ride that horse would have you still get on your horse with your Spurs ?
You both are looking at spurs as a disciplinary tool which is not what they are. They are an extension of your foot just like a bit is an extension of your hand used to communicate with your horse.
He answered that in the video - he wears spurs - won't ride without them. End of story. If the horse was doing everything he "asked" he wouldn't need to use them, but he will still wear them. Like a plumber always has a hammer, even if he doesn't use it.
a plummer wouldn't have a hammer if he didn't use it, and this cowboy wouldn't be wearing spurs or a harsh bit if he wasn't using them.
If your horse doesent need spurs then its ok but if it does use them
if you have a sensitive horse then you should not need spurs. however if you are short or cant reach with your legs try a spur with a ball end that rolls to keep from too much pressure from hitting the horse

If large-diameter rowels are less likely to injure the animal and one can't feel the individual points of the rowels anyway, why not simply replace them with same-size discs? It may not look "traditional", but would get the job done without looking "mean" to people who don't understand how they work. To keep the weight of the discs low, I'd drill or punch a series of holes in a circle pattern around their center. If the edges of the discs are rounded and smooth, they would reduce chances of causing abrasion injuries as well.
You can do that very thing. They sell round replacement discs. The problem is that many times they just are too "soft" to work as the rider and horse needs. You should match the spur to both the needs of the rider and the horse if using them. I don't, however, do anything based on what it may look like to other people too ignorant to understand what or why I am doing it. I do what is proper, and those watching can either educate themselves or ask me and I will talk to them about it. I open carry my pistol every day and..... yeah, my last couple sentences explains that as well. ;) Good question though.
The spurs you’re wearing also have somewhat dull tips compared to antique spurs, which have a the tips of the rowel points much sharper. Though it’s possible even with those spurs that have the jingo bobs you could still puncture and hurt the horse, though only an incompetent rider with low skill can do that.

Okay, the video shows the spurs, and the narrator talks about pressure distribution - but does the video actually explain "How to use Spurs?". I think not..
I understand, however, the horse responds to the spurs because he knows if he doesn't the pressure will become pain. He fears what could happen if he does not comply. I want the horse to respond to my cues because he wants to out of mutual trust and respect.
sonseere10 ya the horse I ride at my riding club doesn’t care. I kick him gently and he doesn’t respond to trotting. Our teacher encourages us to lead the horses on with whips because they won’t go otherwise, no matter how hard you kick them
Spurs are simply extensions of your body, like a finger off the back of your foot. It causes annoyance and sometimes slight discomfort, but it is an instant signal to the horse to do something. Kind of like poking you in the rib with a finger to get you to move..... or even like using a lead to annoy a horse into moving (like when loading onto a trailer). Certainly you would not beat the horse with the lead... and the same goes with using spurs. You can do the same thing with your heals though, but some horses respond better to the more localized pressure that a spur provides. The idea that (as a blanket statement) that horses obey spur use because they fear being harmed is..... hogwash. Does that mean some people don't abuse the use of spurs? Nope, I am sure there are. But that does not mean they represent the actual correct use and reasons why horses respond to them.
maybe if u stopped abusing them, they would listen, but first you have to listen to the horse.

Please, I could say the same thing about reins.
When you pull on the reins, the horse stops because it fears that if it doesn't stop you will pull on the reins harder which will turn the discomfort into pain. That's why I don't use reins, I want my horse to telepathically understand where I want the horse to go.
I say do what u want, I can't control other people, but I personally do not like of use spurs. (also I ride english)

I've just watched a bunch of videos on spurs and one thing is clear to me; People disagree on what they are for and how to use them. I can't find any practical, informative videos on the subject that have consensus in the comment section. I'm not claiming I know, I don't, I'm just saying, it seems like something there is a lot of disagreement about.
Agree, before this vid, thought spurs were used for correction, not cues. Thought spurs were like the hand-held whip English riders use to reinforce leg cues.
