  • This is one of my favourite's from Rubber Soul, perfectly messy and mysterious. In my two videos, I attempt to recreate both theories of the mystical Guitar parts, and who really played them.
Another song written about the turbulent relationship, written after Jane's departure to Bristol in order to pursue her acting career, leaving Paul to compose this scathing, wailing tale of a failing relationship.
Originally recorded on the 24th October 1965, featuring a more Bossa Nova arrangement of the song, with a line up of Paul on his Rickenbacker 4001 Bass, George (most likely) on his Gretsch Tennessean, John on the Jose Ramirez Acoustic and Ringo on his '64 Ludwig Kit and Percussion.
Not satisfied with this initial attempt, a new version was much later recorded on the 6th November that same year, which too was discarded.
    Nearing the completion date for the album, the band rushed to record the final version of the song. On the 10th November, the band arrived at EMI to record their final version of the song. Theories for the personnel on this version vary rather a lot, but tend to go one of two ways;
One: John on the Gibson J-160e, George on the Fender Strat, Paul on his Rickenbacker 4001 Bass
Two: Paul on the Epiphone Texan, Epiphone Casino and his 4001 Rickenbacker Bass.
However, personally, I don't believe in either of these theories fully. I don't believe that Paul recorded EVERY stringed instrument on the song, as I have tested my Epiphone Casino and simply couldn't get close to the thin snap of the album. I too tested my Squier Stratocaster, but again I couldn't get the right sound like on the record. After a chat with the brilliant Sam Popkin, he alerted me to the idea that George played his '63 Gretsch Tennessean! I of course don't have a Tennessean, so I attempted the part on my Gretsch '62 Country Gentleman Reissue, and the tone was pretty much there. Therefore, I must believe that the Electric Guitar part was played by George on his '63 Gretsch Tennessean, through his Vox AC30.
As for the Acoustic Part, I am STILL undecided as to who played the part, but I am personally leaning towards Paul playing the part on his '64 Epiphone Texan. The reason I think this is I couldn't replicate the bright crunch heard on the record with my EJ-170e. With my Texan however, it was much easier to obtain the sound of the acoustic on the album, most likely a result of the 25.5" Scale length of the Texan, compared to the 24 and 3/4" Scale length of the EJ-160e. However, the difference in construction between my modern guitars and the vintage guitars, especially the vintage J-160e's, may be a factor also.
I decided to record both Acoustic Guitar parts so that you, the viewer can decide who you think played the part on this song.
In my video, I used some slight EQ to approximate the sound of the Gretsch Tennessean with my Country Gent, boosting some of the mid and high ranges, to get that disgusting edge to the sound.
For both Acoustics, I also added some EQ, especially on the EJ-160e, to approximate the sound of the record, again, raising the mids and high end.
    ~~ Notable Moments ~~
0:05 - Paul accidentally misses the lower strings
0:10 - Paul Plays an Fm with an added Ab note on the 4th fret, the only time this appears in the song
0:27 - George's Lead enters with an explosive line
0:57 - Paul plays a C# with an Ab on the 4th fret, George plays a variation of the first line
1:03 - George's buried guitar notes begin here
1:17 - Previously undiscovered and unperformed notes here!
1:50 - George is heard attempting to tune (?) his notes
2:14 - Buried upper Guitar Overdub can be heard to enter
For recording the acoustic guitars, I used my Rode NT1-A Condensor Microphone, placed around 2 - 2.5 feet away from the body of the guitar.
For the Electric Guitar part, I recorded through my Vox AC30VR Valve Replicator amplifier with my Shure SM57 Condenser Microphone, placed around 20cm from the Speaker Cone. No distortion or Fuzz was used of any kind for this part, instead the crunch was obtained by cranking the secondary volume to about 5, and the initial volume on around 6, which paired with the Full Treble, No Bass, I was able to replicate the crunch of the released Guitar rather accurately.

These videos take a great deal of time and effort to make (especially this one!), and without my viewers support, learning, recording, and editing these videos feels fruitless.

Thank you so much for watching!

This is one theory as to who played the Guitars on I'm Looking Through You! For this video, the theory is that Paul played the Rhythm Guitar, in the second video of this song, I have recorded John as playing the Rhythm Guitar.
Regardless of who may have played the Rhythm, I believe that George played the Electric Lead, see the description for more details!

I’ve always been quite fond of how “real” this song sounds. It has a few blemishes, but I think it really adds to the character of the song!

Hell yeah really cool to see the Texan in action! Sounds absolutely stunning mate! Also really cool to see the Gretschs being used as I don’t think I’ve seen any other cover use one and it definitely gets close!

Thanks Paul! It sounds fantastic! I only wish they made the pickguards a little darker and with more depth, like the Vintage ones, these modern ones look a little too purple and flat. Other than that it's great!

I don’t know if you’re gonna do a remake of In My Life but good thing I have a theory. I heard 2 guitars. George Harrison was possibly on the Tennessean and John Lennon was on the Sonic blue strat. I definitely disagree with a theory with John Lennon playing the rhythm guitar with a capo on the second fret. John was doing the up and down strumming while doing the first position chords, but George isn’t only doing the riff, he was also doing that softly strumming straight through the chords. That is 1, 1 amazing theory!! Ah, ah, ah!! *thunder & lightning*

I'll have to look into that song someday! I'm actually constructing a parts-caster sonic blue strat. It's taking a while, but once its completed I'll get on that case!

Who makes the strap on the Texan? I’ve been looking for something like it for a while

I've also been hunting for ages! Even before I got the Texan. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find a suitable looking strap, so the one you see in the video is actually made by myself custom. It's just a Fender Vintage Style Leather Strap which I added some shaped wool that I bought at a local shop! Sorry!

    What's the acoustic guitar model?

It's an Epiphone Masterbilt Texan FT-49! Any other information is in the video's description! :)
