Missed: communicate with the bass-player! Make your bass-guitar and bass-drum sync when they need to for that extra oomph. Very important lesson I've learned. The sound just get amplified to the next level when you build on the same patterns :)

Spot on, for me its about being tight with my bass player, also knowing what the song needs, what is the song about, knowing when to change the energy if at all.
Biggest thing for me about playing in a band as a drummer is learning to have fun with the parts. If there was a hyped instrumental where all I was playing was a standard rock beat, I used to kinda relax in those parts as "Oh, this is an easy part, I'll use this to catch my breath" whereas now I really get into the moment. Same goes for the opposite--if it was slow, I used to be stressed about playing all the right notes whereas now I can play with feel and not overplay. Though I do have to say this--if you are a new drummer, you don't have to play a fill every four measures or before every drop--you don't even have to play a certain fill that is in a song; honestly sometimes building up then going silent is the best thing for a song, sometimes giving a good base for the guitarist to play a riff or two ultimately makes the band as a whole sound better, and if you are a drummer who can be the background where you need to be and rock while in the spotlight then know that you are in a good place.
Solid video man. Less is more with a band for sure. I had a difficult time trying to make my self realize I don’t need crazy fills all the time or at all when playing with a group.
As a newer drummer, I find it integral and useful to know how to play out of/through mistakes, regardless if it's your mistake or another band mate's, i.e. keeping the song going if/when the vocals come in late or early, or someone misses a part. Also, it's important to bring backup equipment. Broken stick? Have some spares. Your go-to pedal breaks? Have a cheap backup waiting in the wings. Great video. I try to follow these rules partly because I can't do a lot of fancy stuff. Another thing that I think is important is to connect with the bass player. It really helps the foundation of the song when the bass player and the kick are in sync. Not necessarily playing the exact same rhythm, but playing together. Most bands prefer someone who can stick it in the pocket rather than a drummer who over plays. You don't have to be super fast nor have a ton of crazy fills as along as you can keep time and follow these rules.

Right on. You nailed it pretty good. It's a lot like getting the recipe right for a soup. Too much of "this" or not enough of "that" can make or break a song. I like being the drummer that participates with the rest of the musicians rather than showboating or being minimal in my playing. Good pointers.
I haven't seen the rest of your videos so, maybe you already covered this. Would be cool to see a demonstration of dynamics that are more extreme as in Blues, Ballads, etc. My band generally likes to drop the volume by half during the verse and most singing parts in general.

There was a drummer who played at my church while I was injured this year and he had no dynamics whatsoever and he had a percussionist degree:/

Absolutely correct! the drummer needs to be more of a musician, in touch with the other instruments as well as the singers and so forth. Too many drummers are not in tune with the actual purpose of a song. Meaning, the drummer is a part of the band he or she is not the spotlight. A good knowledge of music theory and how instruments work is also helpful for drummers. Excellent lesson! Keep up the great work!
What about locking in with the bass player? Some bass players are excellent and will follow the drummer, and the drummer will in turn lock in with the bass player. But how do you play with an average bass player? Or is that something you cannot change? Well, practice I guess XD

If it's mine I just got myself my first drum kit, it's a Pearl Vision VBA Artisan ll NY Splatter it's 2 up and one down came with free Zildjian ZBT cymbals. more keys to playing in a band.... creating space for others, filling space when needed...when I drum in the pocket and only hylight essential accents, play less buisy or rest completely, this creates Space for a lead player to step out. My bass player loves it. If you want to play more seductive music... Rests and Space are powerful tools. .
I'm late but think of it this way, dont play following a click, play with the click. Act like your making the click play with you. Relax and lay back and play the beat man! Once you cant hear the click for some reason, that's when u got it perfect! Good luck man

I have a problem about playing in the band. I have been playing drums for 4 years and ı joined a band couple months ago. When ı playing with covers i performing perfect but when in the band my hi hat rythm slowing down. Do you have any advice?

One more thing... If drummers would concentrate on learning and perfecting the 40 PASIC rudiments, fills will become much more natural and grooves will be easier to embellish without affecting the pulse.

Here in my church we are 4 drummers, and we have our cronogram of who plays when, so... 2 of us are very good drummers, but they are really don't get what the rest of band ask them. Very complicated... sorry for bad english.

not just practice, good timing training helps with that.
