Huberman is great. He provides so much info and is very thorough on his podacst. I would like to add that you can do hypnosis with a trained mental health therapist also - not just with an MD. In my state you would he hard-pressed to find a psychiatrist who does anything more than prescribe meds. You also can look for a therapist who does Ego State Therapy - as it has a hypnotic component.

I am fascinated by the concept that the factors contributing to neuroplasticity occur simultaneously in the hypnotic state, rather than being separated in time by the waking/sleep states. That introduces a lot of interesting hypotheses.

I was listening to a lecture by a UCLA professor who specializes in treating drug addiction. He drew a clear distinction between the manner in which pleasure is only a temporary state of mind that motivates a person to desire and seek more pleasure perhaps in an unhealthy compulsive manner. Whereas happiness is a state of mind in which one is fully content and therefore doesn't feel any desire let alone a compulsion to seek anything more. This is quite a significant observation that applies to many different aspects of compulsive behavior in human beings especially as it applies to the evil people do in pursuit of wealth and power.

Hypnosis = state of calm yet high focus.
Neuroplasticity is triggered by high focus followed by period of relaxation(Deep sleep or NSDR)
Hypnosis brings both those states together. This is why it's effective in accelerating neuroplasticity

You dont have to be relaxed to enter hypnosis. People have been hypnotised whilst exercising. Hypnosis is an active state and not passive, as it involves focus and imagination. Eyelids do not need to be closed as hypnosis is a state of mind not a state of eyelids.

Interesting. Many years ago I took part in clinical tests as part of research into hypnosis, with highly qualified practitioners. After two one-hour sessions using different approaches I was told I couldn't be hypnotized. This does happen, and to a surprising number of people.
I tried the Spiegel test, and it seems to confirm this.
This is why I find this video interesting. I get tired of the people who say "everyone can be hypnotized". Not everyone can. This is a pity since hypnosis is an extremely powerful thing. I'd have loved to know how it feels.

Excellent description of the difference between Serotonin & Dopamine relative to the ingestion of Psilocybin/LSD & MDMA.
I will share an experience I had with LSD as a teenager (late 60's) and smoking. I was smoking a pack a day and enjoyed it until I dropped a hit of sunshine and when I lit my cigarette it became a "straw in a campfire... sucking up the smoke". It seemed so
patently absurd to do this at that moment, I quit and never smoked again; (I'd been smoking for about a year).
Now, consider that I joined the Navy about 6 months later and nearly everyone on my ship smoked and I never once felt the desire to smoke. Weed, yes. Tobacco no.

This may sound like a dumb question, but is there a difference between mentalism, hypnotism and/or hypnotherapy? Basically, Uri Geller versus Milton Erikson's work. It seems that there would be a difference between getting someone to think they are walking an elephant on a leash versus getting someone to stop smoking cigarettes. FYI, I only ask so my ignorance may turn into awareness and knowledge. 😂 Asking questions is the only way we can grow in understanding. Great video, thank you!

I wonder if Dr. Huberman has stumbled upon Dr. Carl Hart's work yet.
I don't think MDMA use needs to necessarily be clinical to be positive. W/ societal issues worked on MDMA could be used respectfully & beneficially w/o clinical use. I realize w/ the way society is now clinical might be the best for the GP. That shouldn't be ignored but is b/c it's a hot button issue... Ignoring issues does not make them go away. Heavily capitalizing off of healing doesn't make the World a better place for a majority of the people. I'm so nervous about psychedelic capitalism & so saddened for the people rotting away in prison due to harmful & misinformed speech about drugs & drug use. 💔
Good will prevail as it does but we're going to experience a lot of pain before that if these things aren't discussed deeper & further.

The whole hypnotizability thing is mostly BS. When the research was originally done, a bunch of people sat in a room, and they all listened to the same record to see how hypnotizable they were. Since then we've learned that everyone is different (surprise) and their responses vary depending on the types of suggestions. We all go into a hypnotic state daily, it's a natural state. The types of people that have been deemed as not hypnotizable are, they just need a different approach and it takes a bit more work. I mean this isn't even new or groundbreaking, as George Kappas discovered this years ago and his hypnosis curriculum has been teaching about the 2 categories of suggestibility types (emotional and physical) for years as well as the crossover and varying levels between the 2 types.
The problem is, not enough people are actually "doing" hypnosis. The people talking about it aren't training in, or doing hypnosis, they're just looking at it through an academic lens.

DEAR TIM: I am editing this comment to add an introduction because I realized this video only has 41 comments as of now and there’s a chance you might read it. Please do.
I think you of all people might be able to offer custom advice for my situation. And if you don’t know much about lucid dreaming I’d like to talk to you about it because you are a huge candidate due to your score of 4 to become very good at wake induced lucid dreaming which could be an amazing thing for you to try. I mention why I want to do it in the following comment. But I hope this finds you and I hope you’ll find the bit about archetype exploration in the dream state. But most of all. Help:
    The original comment follows:
I snap shut just like you said. I didn’t even hear you say the world “slowly.” I just heard “now shut your eyes.” I am notoriously unhypnotizable. It’s too bad. Also I can’t see my imagination well.
These things make it difficult to study the things I’m most interested in which is wake induced lucid dreaming and experimenting with archetypes in the dream space. And possibly writing music with the phantom of passed musicians.
I regularly have lucid dreams at night which I had to train myself to do. I can only be in a meditation induced or wake induced vivid space for less than a second. And never once have I been able to by hypnotized. I can’t relax around anyone. I don’t trust strangers with my eyes closed and don’t even trust family members not to be up to something.
Focus is hard for me because my dopamine production seems uncommonly low. This hasn’t been confirmed by a neuroscientist but I can’t form habits. Not even bad habits.
I sure wish someone would give me some advice. Nobody I’m aware of has the same issues I have. Even as a musician, bad technique never turns into a habit. If someone tells me a better way I just switch to that way.
I’m completely self taught and only got good at music by enjoying myself. Instruction beyond a comment is useless to me in all capacities.
If someone says “try this” and it helps I’ll immediately adapt it into my technique but in a formal learning situation I am completely useless. I take medication for it. It spikes dompamine. Without it I’m a blob. I’ve been off it for years at a time trying to live without it and it truly feels like my brain just doesn’t produce as much dopamine as other people.
Forcing myself to do projects is worse than pulling teeth. I’ve quite literally had to beat the shit out myself before. I might have to do it again because the medication helps me practice, shower and work, but it gives me crippling apprehension towards my own comedy and music projects.
I’m certainly going to try this wakefulness technique more. (Looking at the ceiling and all)
When I drink I completely lose my memory of half the night. Is there a psychiatrist out there? Help! I’ve got so much potential! I could make a difference if I could get out of my own way. I’ve lost two record deals. I mean I was offered two separate ones and both fell through because of self sabotage. Well, not the first record offer. Rick Rubin fired my A&R guy without even listening to the records he was signing on. So I hate him, but the other record deal was my fault. I couldn’t lead my band properly. Depression due to writers block which is just a self perpetuating feedback loop of excuses to not work.
    Help. Anybody.
I could really help a lot of people if I could fix what’s wrong with me. It’s all I want to do. Make the world better. Help people like me. Help people not like me. If God is out there I’ll do what he wants. Someone just please help. The hardest thing is, I know what I’m capable of but I’m afraid of something. Afraid of failure and of success. Had so many failures that I’m used to it but the nagging feeling of being gifted and simultaneously cursed with sluggishness and confusion and poor attention and insomnia accompanied by fatigue.
I want to fulfill my destiny and I want to be successful for the sole purpose of helping others and having a place to sleep. Thanks for listening.
    I think I’m worth helping.
    Thanks again.

@Becky Young A few years ago I was at a dinner party, and a guy there was an amateur hypnotist. After dinner we’re all sitting around talking and he brings up the subject of hypnosis. Another guest, a college-age girl, looks uncomfortable. The more he talks the more scared she looks. I don’t know why. But the guy picks up on that. Maybe he could somehow tell she would be easy to hypnotize, because he starts looking directly at her as he’s talking. She can’t look away. At one point he points his finger at her and says “Sleep!” And she slumps over. After that he does some usual stage hypnosis stuff with her. It was kind of creepy, since he hadn’t gotten permission from her to do that, but it was really interesting to see.

They say you cant make someone do what they dont want... but he DID hypnotize her when she didnt want him to though, now didnt he? So clearly, the idea that you still have some control over what you will & will not do, is pretty much moot at that point anyway.

@@beckyyoung2173 Well, most people will not be hypnotized if they don't want to be. Individuals like the girl I mentioned do exist, but they're rare. In the vast majority of cases, you'll go under only if you've given your consent. And even then, a certain percentage of the population can't be hypnotized at all, consenting or not. Hypnosis can certainly be used for fun, but in the hands of a competent professional it can also be a valuable therapeutic tool. If ever you want to try it, for whatever reason, it's important to find a hypnotist who's both competent and ethical.

stage hypnosis is more easier .. number of people .. people get scared on stage and so u become easily hypnotised specially
after u see all near by people getting hypnotised.. from this some are actors .. they themself enjoy the sleep and are in light state and they enjoy .. the sleep and are aware of whats happening while some are in deep state.
Clinical is more harder suppose I come and I say I need to be hypnotised and I decide I dont want to be hypnotised
you cannot do anything .. Lot of different different ways humans can behave.

I wish Huberman would stick to talking about subjects that he is an expert in. Unfortunately he is just parroting out the out of date nonsense by his fellow at Stanford, Speigel. The Speigel eye roll test was discredited years ago by Hilgard and virtually no one in the hypnosis world uses it. Also many of the current researchers such as Kirsch, Lynn, Wagstaff etc say that hypnosis is NOT a state.

@Tim : I love your content and ability to research top quality information from experts in general, but this subject I know quite well (I’m certified in hypnosis, NLP and trained in other psychotherapeutic approaches and cognitive science), and what is being said here is a vast generalization of a mixt of traditional hypnosis approaches. Contemporary approaches of hypnosis (used today in hospitals for anesthesia as well as in therapy) that are researched by science are mostly based on ericksonian hypnosis (from Milton Erickson), and are not at all limited by the kind of clichés that this man is discussing. Hypnosis (or rather hypnotism) is NOT a state, or a mixt of states, but rather a way to NAVIGATE BETWEEN STATES. And they don’t need to be « calm » or « focused » or anything of that sorts. It can be anything. For example, a conversation like the one in this interview, a thoughtful daydreaming in a train, or an activity you’re involved in… all of those things can be different states of consciousness that happen naturally (and definitely to you too) and that hypnosis can help reach more easily and purposefuly, help mixt together, amplify, nuance, explore, and navigate between.
