Traded my 86 GT in at 212k miles on it. Still ran great and didn't barely burned a drop of oil. Also, the tranny was indestructible. 2.8 v6 = legend. And that boxy interior? An ergonomic triumph with unheard-of legroom.
Someone really loves this car, because it looks like it's brand new. The interior is perfect! Nice video, Saabkyle04! You do an outstanding job providing seemingly endless details for each car you review. It's obvious you've been doing your homework. :thumbs up: (subscribed) Cheers from St. Louis!
I think there was more to the car being axed than the sales because they out sold MR2s by leaps and bounds. And when Pontiac showed off a Fiero Concept car for the 1989 model year I'm sure a lot of people thought of holding out for it like most people did. The last year of the MR2 in 89 was a miserable 2537 in north america, then when the MKII came out in the following year it jumped to 17,606. Pontiac sold over 300K Fieros in its five year run, I'm sure with a release of a better 2nd gen version sales would have jumped up.
it out sold the MR2 in America because the import yen to American dollar conversion was terrible due to the trade economy which led to it being overpriced in the USA, but the MR2 out sold the fiero in the rest of the world. Still the MR2 was the better car in performance and reliability.
even though the mr2 had an additional decade of production. those engine fires the fiero was known for must not have got through peoples heads if they continued to buy em. I'd buy any wedge sports car over this anyday.
During my high school years I saw one of these in the mall and go a chance to sit behind the wheel. I’ll never forget it was the first car where I couldn’t see any hood pass the windshield wipers. That was exciting to me at the time. 😃
Josh....Been driving a Fiero (my third) as my ONLY automobile transportation since 1989. Have had an 88 GT V6 5 speed I bought three years ago with only 21K at the time I made the purchase. Now has 54K. I plan to drive it until I quit driving.....which might not be long the way that cop hidden behind the stop sign is looking at me!
My God my '87 Gt never sat that high I guess mine must have been lowered but I loved that car...There was an '88 Gt for Sale on Ebay it was kept by the guy that owned the dealership in the showroom it had like 30 miles on her still had the seats wrapped in the original plastic I wanted it so bad.
At time 8:51 that is the one I had. A 1985 Fiero GT, automatic, sun roof, fully loaded, black metallic beauty. I loved it. It was a piece of junk mechanically, but god I loved it! I would love to have one again.
2:23 right off the showroom floor, the 2.8 V6s had an authoritative sound in the Fiero, 6000 STE & Cavalier Z24. Though they weren't big on h.p., I am thinking it was a different type muffler? Interesting how Pontiac was bold enuff2 pull this off. Today, most new cars are too quiet, even in the "performance" line. NOT countng Chally, Camaro & Mustang V8's.
Just stumbled onto this... Thanks for posting it, what a trip down memory lane! I had a black 86 GT notchback and my brother had a red 87 GT slant back like you depict here.
I had an 86 gt like this one that was red and had the 4 spd manual transmission. had power mirrors, locks, and also a removeable sunroof. loved that car.
what a gem.. and a rarity in that condition for sure. A few people out there still own fieros, i see them around on occasion. Would have love to seen the Red GT Fastback in that ad 10:34 ?
I had an 86 GT with the bass sub-woofer system featured in this video. In that small cabin the sound system was great, and yes, this was in the days before CD's. I would have loved to have gotten the '88 model with the improved suspension, but I bought a house instead.
I never understood why Pontiacs sounded like that in '86? That growling exhaust note was even on 2.8 V6 6000 STE Sedans. I enjoyed hearing them drive by & personally thought it was cool!
I had the 85, Five-speed, four cylinder version. I now wish so much that I would have kept it. Same color as shown here. The guy I bought it from said the clutch was "bad".......I drove it daily for the two years I had it. Others can rag on it all day, I know it was a great car....still just TWO-SEATS...remember that! The interior is very very roomy & comfortable...you sit low to the ground & see every other car around you at bumper height. I got 30 MPG around town...the handling was just fine...I never did canyon boy racer type thing. Very fast directional changes possible. The trunk is huge, full width & very deep. You can still get one very reasonable, I'd recommend an 85(First bodystyle) ...SE version Manual, V6.
This car > the Solstice. If GM wasn't so insistent on so much badge engineering and realized that no one who was interested in a GNX or a Fiero would be in a Corvette, they may not have had to deal with the failures they did down the line. Pontiac should have always had something like this in their showrooms, and less of the "volume seller" badge-engineered crap. No one really understood what made them different than Chevrolet besides some trim panels.
