Thanks Matt for the nice preview. Independently of the actual laptop/tablet and its form factor, for me the most interesting part was how you defined the kind of niche that Strix Halo is. When Strix Halo information started to leak, it raised excessive expectations for a kind of product that AMD hadn't designed before. Especially the rumors about iGPU that could match the performance of a mobile RTX 4070 are too good to be true. As many others stated, I see a good opportunity for this APU to make a difference in a few premium NUC-like PCs, where performance is not hampered by battery limitations and small form factor would not allow an external GPU. Still, the overall CPU+iGPU performance could come close to a budget gaming desktop PC. For laptops, it makes sense for workstations like ZBook running Windows, but I do not see many such models to exist in the market.
it's what I wish my surface pro 7 was! I agree with the comment below about this being in a mini-PC. If someone would make a mini-PC with this chip, at least 32GB RAM, 1TB+ storage for $750 I would buy one in a heartbeat. I feel like a lot of the mini-PC makers REALLY up the prices on their more powerful models, but I know so many people that would buy these if the price was realistic. At the point you are spending $1k or more that's mini ITX desktop PC territory but between $500-750 for a device with this power, and with better thermals, would sell like hot cakes.
I think this is finally a proper Surface Pro competitor now. Honestly spec for spec this is just better in every way so long as you don't mind the thickness. Think Asus might have made my next go to tablet.
Love the form factor, but unfortunately had too many issues with the 2023 Flow Z13 and had to return more than one of them. Hoping that this has a number of improvements made over the previous models to be worth picking up.
I'm 90% sure I'm gonna buy this, at least to support this style of APU. For a future versions of the 395Max+, I'd love to see three versions of the chip with scaling similar to the M series. sort of a 1x, 2x, 3x when it comes to the GPU. So maybe 20 GPU cores, 40 GPU Cores and 80 GPU cores or something similar. To me, this is where AMD might be able to shine on laptops. it is special, but let's be honest, the cpu is the special thing in it and it is the only thing now with this cpu. but 99% of us would rather have a laptop with the same specs.
There was no benchmark, but take this, Linus played wukong in high, and it was above 60. And you know how powerful something running wukong high in 1080
Do you think it can compete with lunar lake for battery life when completing simple tasks like taking notes? Thinking about buying this as a uni student. Great Vid btw!
I heard the last gen only got 4 hours of SOT, but the new one will have a larger battery and hopefully a more efficient chip, but we will have to wait for tests. I suspect it will still be subpar compared to laptops.
I hope this lives up to the hype, although I think this will be let down by a) the price and b) the lacklustre AMD graphics drivers. Sure, this thing will be great for gaming, but many people doing actual work who would have been interested in this can't use one because the GPU is almost definitely not supported in their software of choice
That power connector looks like a mini display port. The camera/mic look/sound like any laptop from the last 25 years. Sad, but since I care zero percent about it, funny. The non upgradable RAM is not acceptable to me, but it is a tablet so I will let it slide. Question, what resolution were the games running at? Overall it looks like a great little system, no question about it, and thank you for this video. If I had money I would love to shop for a similar system, though not necessarily a tablet. AMD has a great APU there and I do believe with some effort it will shine inside a properly cooled gaming laptop or mini PC. I just hope that AMD isn't asking a crazy price for it and misses the opportunity it has. If a gamer has the same price laptop, one with this great APU and one with a dGPU, they will go for the dGPU and we all know that means Nvidia. Thanks again for the video.
I ran the games at its native resolution (2560 x 1600). As for the cpu being in other devices i think its going to be very expensive this year and maybe next year you'll see it discounted in more affordable mini pcs. I agree having a dgpu at least with the new 50 series will be faster at the expensive of battery life and a louder laptop. Thanks for your time and for watching!
I miss A100 series 2in1s. It's keyboards were detachable. Was providing an extra harddisk. And it didn't need a stand. That keyboard and stand combo shouts I am a tablet not a 2in1 laptop.
Think the Flow Z13’s CPU can handle the top XG Mobile and max out its potential in heavy games and apps? Also, how hard is it to tear down for cleaning?
@@MatthewMoniz The only problem: The MPP 2.0 pen. That´s good enough for note taking, but not good enough for digital drawing/sketching. Not sure why only so few devices have MPP 2.5.
Problem is that for a igpu tablet it’s very expensive. I would have preferred 1200-1500. 1999 is quite steep when you could have gotten a 4070 g14. Hell you can almost get a g14 4060 (on sale) and an ipad
@ that is true, not even gonna argue with that. But some like both form factor of a Laptop and Tablet in one with a full fledge OS like Windows. But the price is quite steep ngl.
What boost clocks would the CPU sustain while using an eGPU, so the like 2-4 thread full wattage Cinebench boost clocks? Considering on upgrading my Ally X that I use an RTX 4090 via USB4 with. The Z1e in that device can maintain 4.1GHz but is still generally CPU clock/cache limited in the games I play.
Can someone explain why would someone buy this for gaming instead of a handheld or going to larger display laptop or even desktop PC. I don't see the point of spending so much money on this form factor.
Hard to compare it to a handheld (this is significantly more powerful) or a desktop (this is significantly more portable), but yeah the comparisons with a laptop are not great unless you want the tablet form factor.
@danielholzer7611 i mean rog ally x can run it all. Plus this new gen of handhelds coming out will be even better. If I'm to spend 2k plus I'd buy 1 handheld and 1 laptop. But it just may be me.
@@MaximillianTiberiusyou may be happy with the z1e, but it’s not for everyone. In many games, I have problems with more than 30 fps at 800p (leaving aside 4k if connected to an external monitor).
@@MatthewMoniz So, my honest thought on this (It's a long one) is, that's my problem with ASUS. They're keep doing this weird little proprietary hardware gate keeping stuff that doesn't really need to be. I'd be happier if it was just all 3 USB C or just 2 USB C with 1 having the capability of 100w+ charging. I believe for a product like this 100W should be more than enough power, and even if they'd want to push it to 100W+ there should be already USB C spec'd for > 100W if I'm not mistaken. As much as I love my Flow x13 it has also got a proprietary gatekeeping with what charger can be accepted for "full power" by having a chip to check if the connected USB C charger is a ROG charger while handshake. It's needless and unhelpful for the ecosystem in general. I won't even expand on their xg mobile because that was a very unwise decision from ASUS from the get-go.
@@CR0SSJ You're spot on, Asus is being like Apple with certain things where its not even necessary especially considering the direction is shifting towards less proprietary non upgradable hardware.
@andyH_England Still, it's a very niche use case that will not only kill your battery life, but will put it under more charge cycles, further hurting battery longevity. Personally, unless the laptop feels slow to use on battery power for basic tasks (like some older Acer Predator laptops), then I see no problem with less performance on battery.
This might be my next, I find the graphics performance amazing! Will take up less space on desk then a laptop, so better in that respect. Can use as a tablet on couch and etc, so better in that respect. Small and light so easy to travel with, use on train and plane, then laptop. Typing experience not as good as laptop, but I'm unlikely to need to do much typing on the go so a non-issue for me.
I got the 2023 z13 and the new one looks amazing, especially battery and the 40 AMD RDNA 3.5 CUs!! But why proprietary power connection? Mine has a 3.2 USB-C and a TB4 port and only gets powered by the non Thunderbolt port (German models are all like this which was stupid enough but now you can’t even charge it at all if you loose / damage your charger…but the rest is a great package! Hyped to upgrade. Full AMD system is very efficient compared to Intel / Nvidia combined which are both aweful at power consumption
No OLED, no buy. What a huge miss by Asus. Edit: Also, for the love of god stop putting 16:10 screens in gaming oriented devices. No japanese games support 16:10, leaving black bars. 90% of indie games also dont support 16:10, again w/ black bars. 16:10 has worse support for games than even 21:9.
would be interesting if they improved the pen support, durability of the Type cover( is it bendable to the back with no problems) and yes a better camera would be nice. And the support for spare parts and Case ( maby skin) so i can tape up the window. they should hav went with the anime matrix instead 😂 maybe the next one. cool device, wuld change my last gen one with better battery live ( and usb 4.2)

it is special, but let's be honest, the cpu is the special thing in it and it is the only thing now with this cpu. but 99% of us would rather have a laptop with the same specs.
Amazing video
RTX 4060, I will believe it when I see the benchmarks
There was no benchmark, but take this, Linus played wukong in high, and it was above 60. And you know how powerful something running wukong high in 1080
No review of the fan noise? If used as a tablet can it be made totally silent without disabling the GPU?
How did you install ollama on it ?
What do you mean? Its an executable file that you download and install. You run it from CMD prompt/Windows Powershell.
@MatthewMoniz yeah ok, no trouble about the igpu. I saw online that it's hard to make ollama work with igpus.
Thanks for responding 😀
how bright is the screen and is the Reflections really bad?
Do you think it can compete with lunar lake for battery life when completing simple tasks like taking notes? Thinking about buying this as a uni student. Great Vid btw!
Thanks!! No lunar lake will still give you much better battery life for sure
I heard the last gen only got 4 hours of SOT, but the new one will have a larger battery and hopefully a more efficient chip, but we will have to wait for tests. I suspect it will still be subpar compared to laptops.
Would you recommend this new version over the Acronym?
Only 32GB? Why is Asus so reserved with Z13, they hyped it so much with that 128GB RAM variant at CES.
Ya the first batch will be 32 but apparently they will offer higher end models with more ram later.
Hey Matt, is the keyboard stable on the hips?
Is this a mini led screen or traditional IPS?
How's the battery life? If battery life is good, it's worth the price.
I wonder how is a drawing experience. Can it serve as tablet for creators?
Great for writing but drawing is still better on the iPad
The SSD door is a ripoff from Surface Pro.
how much is it going to be? the price range.
Seriously? I mention this right in the beginning of the video :P
So it's noisy, hot and low battery life or slow and nothing special? Good to know.
I hope this lives up to the hype, although I think this will be let down by a) the price and b) the lacklustre AMD graphics drivers. Sure, this thing will be great for gaming, but many people doing actual work who would have been interested in this can't use one because the GPU is almost definitely not supported in their software of choice
Can it charge with a usb-c cable ?
Can you give us a ballpark for what the battery life is for every day use?
My question is: Why Flow Z13 over Zephyrus G14? (besides tablet experience)
Battery life and better performance on battery life. also maybe less fan noise. G14 will be more powerful plugged in.
Thank you Matthew for this preview.
For editing i think i 'm going to keep my Px13 with rtx 4070. Better for editing 4k ????
You're welcome! Yes, the PX13 is definitely better for 4k video editing.
If this has the design flaw/flaws of the 2022 version, it is not worth it
That power connector looks like a mini display port.
Are there any significant advantages on the 128gb version vs the 32 gb for gaming?
No
I miss A100 series 2in1s.
Nice video Man. So the ROG Flow 13 is basically windows and Asus version of the iPad Pro M4. The rival to the iPad Pro M4. Not bad.
It definitely fills all the niche's perfectly in one device. Its pretty cool
But the price is quite steep ngl.
this or surface pro 11 which is better for productivity/school (coding)
1) Would you recommend this laptop with a combination of 2k monitor for university students??
2) Does this laptop come with the stylus for it
I answer question 2 in the video :P but yes it would work wonderfully with a 2k monitor.
Where is the X13?
Unfortunately no X13 in 2024/2025
I have the X13 with the Ryzen 9 7940HS and the 4060 variant.
Think of steam machine with this professor. It will be great.
Hey Mathew, I'm looking for a 2 in 1 with an amd apu, oled screen above 60hz and external gpu support, what would you recommend?
I love the form factor and the device but I can’t do windows.. if it had Linux or could easily put Linux on it, I’d be 100% in.
This or Legion Go 2 ?
Completely different devices but this is much better except for portable handheld gaming.
can it be used with pen?
Expecting Fan Specs
Hey Matthew, great work as always. Do you think we will get the 16inch version of ROG Flow? I can't find any informations about it.
LMAO
If it does come out my guess is it will be mid-2025 maybe Computex.
@ Thanks!
@ 🤨??? I bought one over 2 years ago, its a great stuff!
does this compete with the Minisforum v3
arghh...time to upgrade again -- i have the Flow z13 (2021) and the 2023.......
meanwhile macbook air can't even get touch screen or m.2 slots
It looks awesome but for the same price as a G14 with a 5070TI and oled screen the tablet function is a tough sell
This with an eGPU with a 5070 with multi-frame gen enabled to reduce overhead.
Did anyone test this with HDR content tonsee if they least boosted brightness?
I hear proprietary power. It's automatically off the list of "want" now. Just USB C it....
You can still use a usb type c fan charger out to 100W with a tiny hit to performance
So it’s only as good as rtx4060? At that price tag to 😅 and no OLED?
this is great! does anybody know when this will be available for purchase and where to check when?
I believe end of month
@@MatthewMoniz thank you :) I hope we can get it in europe too
Such a disappointment that the screen is not OLED.
is macbook pro or asus proart better for video editing
Plugged into the wall they are both great but if you plan on editing on the go and need full performance definitely MacBook Pro.
@MatthewMoniz don't do that. It will degraded the battery.
@@cameronbosch1213 If you are out and about, you do what you must. So, using the battery on the Mac will be faster and more efficient than the ProArt.
Given xgmobile has a thunderbolt 5 connector, maybe there's a 300v + 5060 variant down the road?
Why ZED and now ZEE? I honestly don't get it
I’m Canadian we say zed like the Brit’s but we are also confused people since we are close to the Americans who say zee
Pen compatible?
Yup as mentioned in the video it comes in the box.
And the support for spare parts and Case ( maby skin) so i can tape up the window.
they should hav went with the anime matrix instead 😂
maybe the next one. cool device, wuld change my last gen one with better battery live ( and usb 4.2)
So they killed the XG mobile?
XG Mobile still exists but the new one is now using Thunderbolt 5. So you can use it with any device.
The new XG mobile is backwards compatible, but the old XG is not forward compatible.
I want this device but not from ASUS (not shelling >2k for ASUS support) and without the g4m3r aesthetics.
I have the old Asus rog flow z13 2023 :]
That's ok! Are you happy with it? Is it performing well for what you use it for? That's all that matters.
@MatthewMoniz Yea
