@@KingParisBuckingham Stanley Jordan has his peculiarity (tapping, two habds playing) , he’s great, but he lasted few years: the Master Joe Pass is solid and lasted 50 years.
@guitar5289 It was an imperfection, and that's because Joe would never play a tune twice in the same manner. Ever. He was improvising every single note and voicing 24/7, still hunting the right progression, octave etc. I personally saw him many times playing splendid chord solo tunes and showing he could switch them to any key with no effect on his playing. That's what playing duo with a singer can bring you to. Objectively one of the greatest Masters of all time.
@Squigglyjoe; Utterly agree; I took a master class from him at Idaho State Uni -1981 and it was almost entirely intuitively-oriented. I never played a note; just sat and took as much in as I was capable of. He was the REAL THING, if Jazz is must be defined as intuitive and inspirational. He has a true link to Django in that respect alone but has never had anything but his own voice. -And how many guitarists could hold their own with the mighty Oscar Peterson, as Joe did often and magnificently?
Met him at Scullers Boston (I think he died a year later). Blistering performance. but I couldnt believe the amount of intensity he put into the perforamce. After the concert was over he was unwinding but as i got the autograph I could see the nervous energy that had accumulated. Ah! I see, ironic really. Joe Pass doesn't need to look at the fret board when he plays but I would recommend that johnmc3862 looks at his keyboard when typing LOL! :) @@musical_lolu4811
Right- It is very similar to the ES-165. Gibson made it for Joe late in his life with a few modifications like a slightly shallower body. The instrument has a wonderful balanced tone, but look who's playing it! I think it sounds better than the old ES-175 Joe got as a gift in the '60's.
Sorry pal I didnt see your post for some reason, I skipped your question for a long time He was very strict and severe, a true zen master. He was vs complication, infact he used to simplify my voicing progressions instead, and mostly teaching lead in and out for solo. Joe's daily remark: "why are you using that tricky progression in such a fast tune? It's too tough. I'd prolly goof it up myself!" He probably wouldn't, but it was funny of him saying that nonetheless. Such a great man :D

That's what he has been doing all of his life, often duo with singers thus having to do all the work himself.
Sry buddy, I skipped your post for a long time. All you said is right, that was Joe, but you missed something if you didn't accept the challenge (that's how he used to teach on a personal basis, "let's play" and then he would stop and tell you what was missing very directly). Sometimes he even used to mock arrogant students with wrong attitude as well, I bet you might have witnessed that in a clinic XD Anyway truly one of the greatest musicians ever. the advertisement for a "guitar chord bible" on this video make me laugh out loud. see, that's why advertising doesn't work. they need to put that on an AC/DC video
In the 70s I asked Denny Dias (Steely Dan) if he gave guitar lessons. "No!" he answered; I TAKE guitar lessons." He directed me to Joe Pass. I took ONE lesson from Joe at his home north of the Hollywood hills. He started by asking me to name a standard song. I said "Moonlight in Vermont". He played an absolutely gorgeous - and faithful - rendition for me. Then he re-harmonized it - as only he could. Masterpiece! Sadly, in my half hour with him I was nearly overcome by nausea from his cigar smoke.

Joe Pass my inspiration. I play guitar and have exactly the same pattern baldness. So it IS possible!

He took inspiration from Charlie Parker. He mentioned that he wanted to play like him.

Joe Pass is a master. Of that amaze and always pleasing. From Brasília-DF, Brazil
