Do not kid yourself. Joe knew his theory; the thing is he had developed to the point where he could allow himself to forget it and just play. In much the same way as you don't count your verbs, nouns, etc when talking. Joe was also a brilliant sight-reader.
@@pablo80955 Because when Joe was learning modes were not really taught. Read his book Joe Pass Guitar Style. You will see that he had a full understanding of theory. My guitar teacher was a student of Joes for 5 years. He told me joe was a mountain of knowledge when it came to music theory.
@Violinoscar that is a very good and accurate summation of becoming a complete musician ...and the analogy you use to compare it with speaking is one that I have used many times when explaining this part of musicianship to non musician friends
Virtuoso, Virtuoso4, Virtuoso Live, Montreau75, Maybe..Virtuoso2...great version of "on Green Dolphin Street). Montreau 75 was shot in video too..some of the videos are on youtube...check out his version of Nuages...and if you like uptempo numbers..check out his version of The Song is You.... the audio version of Cherokee......and not solos..but his stuff with NHOP are fantastic...and his version of Autumn Leaves with Sarah Vaughan is amazing too. They are on youtube.
They say he didn't like the tone of that guitar because there was too much high end. The pickup is a little farther from the bridge than on other axes. Sounds really good to me.
There are no mistakes in jazz, it's called improvisation. He augmented that note to add some extra spiciness, you can see how much he's sweating. So spicy; one whom doesn't love a good spicy curry does not share my tastes.

I hope his solos are anthologized like Parker's "Omnibook" so we can see his musical genious and study rather than copy it.

I was there for that concert ... Stayed in a converted rail car for accommodation, one of the best week of music events I was ever to attend
Seeing the joy on his face as he shreds up and down the fretboard brings a smile to my face. Amazing player!
No, pick up your guitar and go practice. None of us will be him but we all can improve.
I was born this year. My dad was probably listening to this and felt the strange need to procreate. I thank you Joe Pass.
Hahaha
A bit TMI but thanks for the insight
What about your mom?

Clearly an UNTOUCHABLE player.... soul, technique, speed, TASTE - that is the true Pass......
3:50 to the end... WHAT!? Insane... The way he maneuvers those complex voicings is unreal! Joe is the one to beat.
holy shi*!
It doesn't get any better than this. Joe Pass and All The Things You Are.
This is truly music of and for the Gods!
Joe Pass’ single note playing is so recognizable. Possibly more than any jazz guitarist IMO.
Wes has to be right up there with him tho
@@socalangler4082 i don't think he means its the best, i think its just got a very distinct character that's instantly recognizable as him.
Amazing! I can even hear his breathing
Spend 30 years playing and learning jazz guitar. Listen to this, then give up.
Well, let's be honest here, even Larry Carlton said that Joe Pass is his hero!
Exactly lol! But it was fun trying anyway 👍
Dont give up bro, trying to play this is beautiful. Joe himself said, he never plays anything complex!
Genius thank you!
2020, this is still the bomb!!!
almost 2022 and the war on terror continues to reign both metaphorically and literally
2024
This will always be a bomb! Joe Pass is the ultimate guitar maestro virtuoso.

Congratulations to a great master of the guitar, I think it's one of the greatest guitarists in the world!
Бесценный, лучший, гармонический, вечно актуальный в нашем мире.
I had the privilege of seeing him back around 75. He was awesome. I think this song is on intercontinental pass.
Soul therapy.
@Mike3303
In his case a "mistake" sounds like part of the complete picture-another masterpiece, fully improvised jazz music. He's beyond guitar...
Nice and amazing jazz insturment from jazz legend, Joe Pass :)

I just wonder what would happen if he and Lenny Breau played a gig together
Killer Joe!! No Joke

best comment ever!
its the 2-5 going to the real 2, so its 3-6-2-5.
and the 3 mostly sounds like a 1 chord so its kind of a 1-6-2-5.
i like he covered the brand of the guitar. hmm..... what kind of a
guitar is this?
karun8236 its a gibson copy
karun8236 lawsuit era..
It appears from the headstock shape and body to be an Ibanez jp20 signature model Joe pass guitar.. it began being produced around 1980 .
I always wished he'd put his amp a little louder
yeah, i just wasn't sure if he was doing all the chord shapes improvised.
wonder what chet atkins thought of him or les paul or the other way around wonder if they ever meet each other
yep, improvisation is a key factor in jazz
@thom188 it's emaj7#5 in fact
Só não consigo tocar assim por que não tenho um bigode igual ao dele !
fuckin' Joe..
Hahah I actually said this out loud to myself, and then scrolled down to the comments. He's incredible
is he improvising?
