  • In this video, I share my off the cuff thoughts on the importance of having goals when painting and being mindful while painting to best be in alignment with those goals. I also discuss the importance of self compassion as we enjoy this hobby and try not to over think it!

I agree with all you said. But there is also another side to the story. Try different paints as well. I tried painting with oil paints. Now I was painting with acrylic paints for decades. When picking up oil paints I had to relearn almost everything I know about painting miniatures. I couldn't layer the paints like I used to. I couldn't dry brush anymore. However the slow drying time of oil paints gives a lot of different techniques and gives me such a peace of mind. I know every mistake I might make, every wrong turn that I take can be easily wiped away with a makeup sponge and a bit of mineral spirits. I still do TMM with acrylics. But if I feel like it NMM is just laughably easy to do. Like any other style or technique that needs blending colours.

That is a good idea! I have certainly experimented with almost every kind of acrylic miniature paint under the sun, from Citadel, Vallejo, Pro Acryl, Green Stuff World, AK, Two Thin Coats. Maybe I should branch out and try oils or enamels. My only experience with enamels was from when I was like 9 years old and used enamels with those really stiff brushes they come with that you see at hobby stores for model cars. Not a great experience. But maybe I should try, thanks for the comment!

@@TooMiniModelsdefinitely try oils! Even if you start with an oil wash. I'm currently having a blast using oils.

I deal with this problem by try to limit my internal hobby butterfly: work on one unit at a time from beginning to end, once you finished basecoats and in the highlighting/weathering stage you allow yourself to go as far or as little you want. My idea is better off have one army painted to the completion, rather then 5 army projects in works where you rush one to get to another

Absolutely! Glad to hear you are onto a strategy that works for you. I can totally see the logic in that. I sometimes like to keep juggling projects from different armies to keep things fresh, but that is where I am at right now.

With rank and file models it's important to remember you'll be looking at them from a couple of feet away 99% of the time.
