HOW Germany lost its football identity

  • Germany are struggling like never before, and their winning football identity is nowhere to be found. How did one of the strongest teams in world football suffer a significant fall from grace? Coach Jogi Löw, who lifted the 2014 World Cup, seems to have overstayed his welcome, but will have one final shot at glory in the coming Euros. What happened to Germany, and can they right the ship in time for the Euros?

Yeah I mean this sounds just like my Dutch side to me. Germany, like us, had to renew and start over almost from scratch since an entire generation all left at once. After losing players like Robben, Sneijder and Van Persie, you don't just instantly replace them, that takes time.

I can't think of a key Dutch player at any top team other than Virgil van Dijk (who was injured most of last season). The Dutch team were strongest when their members were all top string pullers at their clubs, like the men you mentioned. The best Oranje team were all aces and legends at club level, now most of team need to be googled by most fans, which is kind of sad.
The parallel in Belgium's current crop of the Hazards, Lukaku, Kevin de Bruyne etc is telling. Even having said that, the Belgians are also struggling to replace that greatness as well. I mean they had de Bruyne at Manchester City playing alongside Thomas Vermaelen at Vissel Kobe. The slip is coming

You can't really put them in these decades... Here's why: 1954 was a one time event back then... (1958 Semi Final, 1962 Quarter Final)... 1970s I agree, but only until 1976
And from 1980 to 1996 (European Cup Winner 1980 and 1996, Final 1992; and World Cup Win 1990, Final 1982 and 1986), they just didn't get into the Final with Group Stage in 1984, with Semi-Final 1988 and Quarterfinal 1994... Also after 1996 until 2006 Germany were just bad (Exeption 2002 WC Final)...
Better would be 1966-1976, 1980-1996, 2006-2017(Confed Cup Win)

Edit:Yeah I know Germany was knocked out in group stage of world cup. Flick plays high line and don't have wing backs for that. The main coaching problem of this tournament was to suddenly introduce a new system to a team that still seemed confused by playing it (since they just didnt play it before at all). The lack of LGBT rights is part of a bigger cultural picture of very strict laws against what is seen as sexual licentiousness. Sex outside marriage is illegal for both same sex and opposite sex couples, pregnancy outside marriage and adultery are crimes punishable by imprisonment. Living together outside of marriage is also illegal.
Rape and sexual assault victims are treated as criminals and can be imprisoned for seven years and get 100 lashes. FIFA’s security committee’s document actually tells the Qataris to not treat victims of sexual assault as criminals. Qatar has also said that one night stands/flings/ hookups between supporters and visitors to the WC will be subject to the same laws.

What an absolute shameful, pathetic display from the Germans. Not just against England but the group stages as well. You expect to win a cup from an own goal loss to France and struggling to tie with HUNGARY? Oh but we battered Portugal. And there lied the problem with this team inconsistency. And until Germany can find the consistency again, they're gonna keep falling down the rabbit hole as they've been since 2018.

In the late nineties also they suffered humiliating defeats and their rebuilding efforts started paying off from 2002 world cup on to 2006 , 2010 and finally 2014. Germany will bounce back no doubt. But what is puzzling is why rebuilding efforts have to result in dropping a class player like Thomas Mueller an eternally hungry player for goals ? You can have a front 2 with Werner and Volland then Havertz or Muller behind them. If you ask me that’s a pretty solid front 3. And both Werner and Volland could be replaced with anyone from Havertz, Muller, Gnabry and Sane. And the dm can be Kimmich with Kroos/Gundogan/Goretzka/Neuhaus as the central midfielders. Admittedly there’s no width in a 4-1-2-1-2. Otherwise they’ll play 3 at the back with wingbacks (3-4-1-2) which could still work but I have no idea who could be the 2 WBs, if you really want to fit Gnabry/Sane on the outside one of them could play Wingbacks.

Volland might be the only decent number 9 but he's no match to what other countries have on that position. I don't think Germany need Volland. Instead, they should should work on their hierarchy in the team and build a solid defense. Gnabry, Gündogan, Goretzka, Sane are able to score goals. Werner as well, if he loses that weak form he's been in for a while. One word about Werner: He hasn't shown what he's capable of for Germany since 2017. I guess this has to do with what his position and tactical role are in Germany's team. I hope he can be used as a winger in a way that gives him what he needs. He is wasted on #9 position

Germany had the last bottom drop in the Euro Cups 2000 and 2004. Early 2000s they started building up young talents which came to fruition in the 2010s. German clubs were competitive internationally and so was the national team. Following this success, the new young talents just haven’t been on the same level. You can see this because German clubs are no longer in international semi/ finals like they used to be and the stars of the late 2000s/early 2010s are getting old.

To be fair, for the last ~20 years there has been something like a curse for World Cup title defenders.
The only team being able to do well as the title defender at the world cup seems to be Brazil (win in 1994 and runners-up in 1998). Any other team previous winner dropped out during the group stage 4 years later:
France won 1998 and dropped out 2002 without scoring a single goal.
Brazil won 2002 and dropped out during the quarter-finals in 2006 (the best result of any title defender since 1998).
Italy won in 2006 and dropped out in 2010 last of their group with only 2 points.
Spain won in 2010 and dropped out in 2014 third of their group with only one win.
And finally Germany won in 2014 and dropped out in 2018 again last of their group with only one win.
So for me that means that any winner really needs to restructure the team, even if it seems to be counter intuitive because just moving on and trying to defend the title with essentially the same team hardly ever seems to work at all.

If Germany got out in Group Stage twice at World Cups, then Italy (the other four-time winner of the World Cup from Europe) didn't even make it to the tournament twice in a row. It seems every time someone wins the World Cup, it takes them at least 20-24 years (or 36 years for Argentina, an infinite time for England) to produce another World Cup winning team. I have little doubt Germany is fine. It's still the largest country by population in Europe (not counting Russia) and it will produce many great teams ahead.
