I find it hard to believe this senator believes the US is helping the people of cuba. Can you imagine, sitting around a dinner table talking to his dear cuban friends who still have family living there and that THIS is the solution?
Thank you for posting this excellent analysis of the failure of the US embargo against the small island nation of Cuba. Any logical person would know that any policy that is pursued for over 60 years, without any positive results, it's a failure. However, the Cuban exiles in Miami seem to like repeating failures and do not allow anyone else to change their bankrupt behaviors. It's a shame this travesty has endured for so long.
Because for them it's about politics not about people. They want the People of the island to suffer so much that they revolt. They say it's under the guise of freedom for the people and they claim the government takes most of the money that comes into the country which is true to an extant (20% tax on remittances). But if they allowed more free trade with cuba ironically what most neoliberal capitalists normally want would help cuba and the US aswell
I love this sister and have so much respect for her hard hitting real journalism. She is bar none the best journalist in the world. No man nor woman comes close to her or even catches her dust. She is miles ahead. Bravo my muslim sister. May Allah protect you. Aameen
I am from Cuba and arrived in America in 2022. As a human rights activist, I endured repression and numerous detentions. I firmly believe that ending the embargo will only strengthen the Cuban government, which will continue to disregard human rights. I urge America to intensify the embargo. My family, including my 11-year-old child, suffers in Cuba due to the government's actions, not because of the embargo. The embargo does not restrict food or medicine to Cuba. The lack of food in an agricultural country and the absence of medicine are due to the Cuban government's policies. The people are being punished by their own government. Down with socialism!
Cause Guantanamo bay was signed over to the USA because the Russia wanted to to do the same thing there, put a base.America didn’t want them so close in there back yard (Florida ) so Cuba signed it over to them to avoid sanctions but they still sanctioned them after they overthrew the government with the Castro administration.same thing that’s going on with Russia and Ukraine.America wanted Ukraine to join forces with the west but Russia said not in my back yard.
How much of Cuba's problems are the results of the embargo vs this below? "Criticism of Centrally Planned Economies The concept of central planning is subject to heavy criticism, especially from scholars in the Austrian school of economics. One major critique, associated with Friedrich Hayek, is that central planners cannot efficiently respond to supply and demand. In a market economy, businesses respond to price signals by increasing or decreasing the production of their goods. In a planned economy, there are no price signals, so planners cannot accurately forecast which products will be needed or not adapt to changing conditions. This means that there may be unnecessary shortages or surpluses of certain goods. Another critique is that command economies may be less efficient, due to the lack of competitive pressures. While private companies must avoid waste in order to remain profitable, enterprises in a command economy have no pressure to earn profits or reduce expenses." There's a debate among specialists wether or not a leader can commit genocide against its own people (granted it's a homogenous population). In this case, Pol Pot did not commit genocide by the CCP can be acused of genocide against the Uyghur people. The Uyghur case is, afaik, accepted by specialists on both sides. The Cambodian case is the one debated. Another case that's debated is the cultural genocide case when a culture is destroyed ending what constitutes "a people". Raphael Lemkin wanted the Genocide Legislation to include that situation but due to pressure from the great powers after WWII that part was removed. If cultural genocide was part of the UN Genocide Convention then the 1953 Indian Relocation Act would be considered, legaly, as genocide (or at least intent to commit genocide). In the Cuban case, afaik, genocide doesn't apply even in the opinion of those who consider Pol Pot's killing fields genocide. I visited Cuba in 2015. This video is from 2022. When I visited they were using their resources in smart ways and as soon as I landed back in Brazil the newspapers carried the headline: "Cuba Privatizes Havana International Airport". The problem Cuba was facing when this video was released was the pandemic: nearly 70% of Cuba's GDP comes from tourism. A curiosity: there's a replica of the Capitol Building! A correction: the embargo started under Eisenhower because of preocuppations with the growing violence of the Baptista regime.
She didn't answer because it was a silly question. He thinks the USA has a right to decide if a country can reject American capitalism. His question of asking her for an alternative, alternative to what exactly.
There is no needed “alternative”. End the embargo. It’s a massive failure and humanitarian crisis. Furthermore - as she eloquently said - if socialism and communism have “failed everywhere they’ve been tried” as this representative said, then why not end the embargo and let Cuba “fail” on its own? What a statement like “socialism and communism have failed everywhere they’ve been tried” conveniently leaves out (every time it’s uttered) is the reality that US and all of the western countries foreign policies had been and to some extent still are directed solely at causing said socialist and communist countries to fail. More than a bit unfair to imply that the issue is socialism or communism and not simply unprecedented economic pressure in the forms of embargos and sanctions, unprecedented espionage in the form of assassination attempts (634 attempts on Castro’s life by the CIA, see also the assassination of Patrice Lumumba) or coups (see Operation Ajax in Iran - we are STILL dealing with the blowback from this CIA/MI6 coup), or outright war to prevent these states from self-determination or existence (Vietnam, Korea, Nicaragua, etc.) It takes a real COWARD to not even acknowledge by far the largest goal and actions of US and western powers foreign policy post-WWII in this discussion. This type of gaping omission is all you ever get from the GOP when referencing the “failures” of socialism and communism.
You're a good Fascist and a Communist also. Destroy all opposing opinions is what you want, so everyone can be controlled and manipulated. Destroy the free press and free opinions so only your opinion is heard. Its clear why the embargo is a failure, but in your world it's not allowed to even mention the failure.

I voted for Biden to lift the embargo and he didn’t!! I won’t voted again fir nobody!! Abaja el embargo!!! 60 years of pain for Cubans!!
The tyrant's don't suffer, the people do! The best way to fight the Cuban regime is to strengthen the economy and empower the population.
GOP NEVER LEARNS.
A reporter who pushes back on BS in real time. Nice!

This FL rep is a total stooge.
Why does Cuba tolerate a US military base on its own soil.
I've asked this question too🤔🤔🤔
Same way an ant “tolerates” getting smushed by a human

It takes great pressure to produce a diamond. In many ways he embargo is a blessing in disguise for the Cubans and their government.
Naaah this man is insane
