Markelle Fultz was the number one pick of the 2017 draft, Tatum being the 3rd pick of that draft. The Sixers wanted Fultz who was the consensus number one pick at the time. The Celtics didn't want Fultz, they wanted Tatum. So the Celtics traded the first overall pick to the Sixers for the third + a future Lakers first rounder. The Sixers drafted Fultz, and the Celtics drafted Tatum who they wanted all along. We all know how that turned out.
