Oh, I could hide 'neath the wings Of the bluebird as she sings The six o'clock alarm would never ring But it rings and I rise Wipe the sleep out of my eyes My shavin' razor's cold and it stings Cheer up, Sleepy Jean Oh, what can it mean To a daydream believer And a homecoming queen You once thought of me As a white knight on his steed Now you know how happy I can be Oh, and our good times start and end Without dollar one to spend But how much, baby, do we really need Cheer up, Sleepy Jean Oh, what can it mean To a daydream believer And a homecoming queen Cheer up, Sleepy Jean Oh, what can it mean To a daydream believer And a homecoming queen [Instrumental interlude] Cheer up, Sleepy Jean Oh, what can it mean To a daydream believer And a homecoming queen [Repeat and fade]
No, Chip Douglas. You know alot of the standard "wrecking Crew" were involved in SOME of the Monkees recordings, but a lot of them were players such as Billy Lewis and Eddy Hoh on drums and Chip on bass. Joe Osborne makes an appearance here and there and maybe Carol on a tune or two and Hal Blaine, but it is amazing on how much of their stuff the did NOT play on.
Surprisingly subtle bass line, flawlessly executed as usual.
Brilliant! Thanks for posting, much appreciated.
This is just wonderful. The sound of your bass just warms my heart. Keep it up brother.
Great job! Always looking forward to any new videos from you. Keep 'em coming.
Great cover. Thanks for bringing this one back.

It's indeed very sad but the music goes on and on.

Oh, I could hide 'neath the wings
Of the bluebird as she sings
The six o'clock alarm would never ring
But it rings and I rise
Wipe the sleep out of my eyes
My shavin' razor's cold and it stings
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen
You once thought of me
As a white knight on his steed
Now you know how happy I can be
Oh, and our good times start and end
Without dollar one to spend
But how much, baby, do we really need
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen
[Instrumental interlude]
Cheer up, Sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen
[Repeat and fade]

I believe it was Chip Douglas
I believe the original bassist was the late great Larry Taylor AKA "The Mole" in Canned Heat. If you know for certain otherwise, let me know.

I thought I'd make a better version.
Great job but technically not a "cover" because you added some of your own flourishes (for example at 1:48). For that I applaud you.
