  • To mark the release of the new Argonaut timepiece, Bremont spent time with the Royal Navy's own Clearance Divers to find out exactly what it takes to be part of this elite team and to understand the reliance they place on equipment, teamwork and fitness.
Hear from Commander Al Nekrews QGM of the Royal Navy Fleet Diving Squadron.

I entered the RN as a direct entry clearance diver class 2. Passed in with the drake 48’s, that was 15 years ago, some of the greatest men I have met so far in life are clearance divers.
I’ll never forget the 2 day aptitude test, doing a one mile swim backwards with a line tied to 5 other members, at 8pm during the winter on Horsea Island... after the swim I asked why the damn pond was so long, was told it used to be a missile test pond, great times!

I can’t speak for the infantry but for the role of a class 2 diver I spent 3 years training before entry, I applied at 18 but was waiting 3 years due to a safety issue within the department, I can’t remember exactly but I think there were fatalities. I spent those 3 years with at least 15 hours per week in a swimming pool (3 hours per day Monday to Friday). Learn to breast stroke, slowly for at least 45 mins doing lengths of the pool. Cardio cardio cardio, run a lot and build up speed, until you can do 3 miles minimum. Weight train and do body weight exercises, you’ll be pulling yourself out of the water with a dry suit and some gear A LOT, be able to handle your own body weight under stress. More cardio, get used to the cold, I spent most of the winters and summers in the British sea, it’s cold and you won’t like it, go there as much as you can and enter the water as much as you can. This will be a good start, good luck my friend, this country needs more brave young lads such as yourself.

@@AirsoftAfterHours Thank you for your reply, do you recommend getting scuba diving lessons first, is it worth the cost?
Are there any practical skills other than different swimming strokes you recommend learning?
What weight training exercises do you reckon will be most benefical, obviously bicep curls and machine movements are not as good as more functional movements but are there any particular movements you think most people miss out on?

Does anyone know what the running standard are for this job as I am fine with push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups etc but I struggle quite a bit with running and I read on a website that you need to be able to run 2.4km in 9 minutes is this true and if it is how hard is it and do you have any training tips?

Good old CBDA , was pretty reliable and a simple system 😏
Why did you take away the night attack capability , as in front line NATO Attack frogman? Glad I was in the branch when we trained to place a limpet mine on an enemy ship. A Horsea Island lock gates and back on an O2 CDBA rebreather a great test of endurance. Night attack exercises where we deployed and attack ships was testament to a Clearance Divers skill and training 😎
